im no expert, but thats wot my knowledge on wave dynamics /fluid dynamics tells me... id say, find out how big the wave was in 1960 that hit due to the 9.5 chile quake, then do your own estimates the one that hit the chilean coast back then was around 85ft

Roughly 9.5 - 8.8 x 32 x 32 makes the 9.5 716 times larger than this one. It is NOT going to be anything like that. Estimates go to about 2.5 metres in Hawaii.

Pray that it doesn't trigger the Juan De Fuca plate. That would be utter calamity.

For those that don't know can you confirm that location?

juan de fuca plate

The cascadia subduction zone along the US West Coast.

Apparently the tsunami from the 1960 Chile quake was so powerful that it even killed close to 200 people in Japan, batterin the country for hours with 10-20 foot waves or more

Can anybody tell me why just about 90% of the ring of fire is supposedly "eruption ongoing"?

Is this normal or what?

"Ring of fire"

It's called that for a reason. Yes, it's normal.

I tried all morning. I can't get the cam to come up. I lived in Honolulu a long time ago. The Ewa Beach area is mostly military folks. I certainly hope this thing isn't going to be big.

Ladies and gentleman, I think this may be the beginning of the end of the world. There will be other major natural disasters within a couple of more weeks. As for Chile they have a huge mess on their hands.

calm down... and get a grip, do you smoke? light one up.

Its nothing more than Naturally occurring events, things used to be thousands of times worst the world didnt end it was begining, i will join you in panic when there is NO seismic activity,

Besides LadySkadi's excellent post, which confirms that our concerns about the Juan de Fuca subduction zone are very real and justified, I'd like to suggest an excellent presentation about the 1700 Juan de Fuca Earthquake. It provides details of its effects on the local people (for whom it was calamitous), along with some good gif images, graphics, maps and photographs, and is very easy to read. (IE it's not a highly technical report.)

Well worth reading through and a good resource for any ATS members or visitors who don't know about this serious threat that lies off the shores of western USA and Canada -- especially Oregon, Washington, California and of course, Vancouver.

Best regards,

Mike

So many pages of replies so quickly!

I don't know if this has already been mentioned or not, but I think it is important to note that the U.S. imports much of its fruits and vegetables, especially during the winter months of the northern hemisphere, from Chile.

Even if the earthqauke (or the possible, subsequent tsunami) does not directly damage Chile's farmlands, a event of this magnitude will most certainly impede or distrupt the production and export transportation of Chilean produce.

That could result in serious reprecussions to the U.S. economy; which is already in a fragile state.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those suffering from this quake. The after-shocks must really be terrifying at this point. "mother nature", and excuse me if I'm dating myself, has always been incredibly violent.

I feel privileged and also overwhelmed by our current technological ability to be so attuned to all things on this planet...I wonder about the capacity of my heart and why it is/I am being asked to engage so much and how to do this. All I can do at this point is send out love, maybe another small very small $ contribution and hope that my human heart is capacitated adequately for this global connectivity.

I live in Hawaii and thought I'd shed some light on what's going here. First they can predict the tsunami height by the DART buoys positioned around the Pacific rim. Google DART buoy and you'll find a map of their locations.

Secondly, people are flooding the markets (I already went) to stock up on food and water. The ETA of the first wave is 11:05 so to the person that made the comment about why we're flooding the markets there you go.

There's evacuation zones established so right now it's just a waiting game.

1ft to 7ft? That's a surfer's paradise, don't be surprised to see thousands of surfers flood the beaches then
