What is up with all of the earthquakes?

The world has enough problems as it is...we certainly don't need earthquakes to make it worse.

Man, that is pushing into the 5 and 6 mm/s on every south american station I can get in GEE. The one station IU.LCO very close to the epicenter may have been wiped completely out- getting nothing. Remember that Chile holds the record currently for the greatest earthquake in history in 1960:

en.wikipedia.org...

3000-6000 dead.

Edit; they changed the epicenter and magnitude upon further review. It WAS offshore, meaning a possible threat of tsunami may exist. But so close, no time at all if there was one, it has already hit.

It seems to be causing a chain reaction all the way through central and northern America.

There has just been 4 respectable level quakes in California.

27.02.2010 - 07:04:23 2.9 North America USA California Belden
27.02.2010 - 07:01:00 3.3 North America USA California Pearsonville
27.02.2010 - 06:56:03 4.1 North America USA California Olancha
27.02.2010 - 06:53:02 2.2 North America USA California Cobb

EDIT: 5th.

27.02.2010 - 07:10:43 3.8 North America USA California Cartago

and now 6th

27.02.2010 - 07:14:33 2.3 North America USA California Santa Rosa

aaand 7

27.02.2010 - 07:21:54 3.4 North America USA California Olancha

Although they could all be unrelated I think it is a big coincidence that they are occuring in a line after such a large quake. Same fault line?

This is huge and still nothing on on the news channels yet?

I am watching for news.

Where is the news?

The location looks to be rural - not in a city - some towns about 30 miles away.

Always good to see the earth quake watchers on the ball.

Awaiting details, and seeking them out elsewhere on the net.

Lets all hope nobody is hurt.

PS-Before anyone starts saying there are more earth quakes recently, just know there are thousands of earthquakes, worldwide every year. It is what happens when the gigantic solid crust of a planet perpetually glides around a molten liquid center.

You are going to get a lot of pops and cracks.

Because ATS is still the fastest source of news on the web. They take their lead off us on stuff like this. I give Yahoo 10 minutes more before they have any reference to it.

Yip yahoo just breaking it. uk.news.yahoo.com... Tsunami warning issued it seems. Not an expert but i thought quite a few factors have to be just right for a tsunami to occur(not just an earthquake) so hopefully they get lucky....

So true...so sad, but so true.

Unfortunately, as fast of a news source as ATS is, you need to really dig for the few gems that are worth anything at all.

Earth quake news? ATS got it going on.

Oh wow.. and 8.5 is absolutely huge.

some of you may not know how the scale actually works. It's not like a hurricane where you move into a different category from a small mph change with no change really noticed.
wiki richter scale

According to Wiki, there's only 1 per year at this size recorded per year and is a great magnitude greater than a 7. I truly hope this is as far from as many people as possible.
