Thanks for that bit of info as well

CNN is reporting that the Tsunami evacuation sirens will sound in Hawaii at 6am local time, 1100 am ET.

The entire pacific basin is now on alert.

Reports are coming that people are starting to move and grocery stores are seeing a frenzy of hoarding in preparation for the worst.

This could be one hell of a day.

"they are the idiots that have it coming if something does come along"
gee thanks

BECUZZZZ I can be down the coast at 50 metres looking down sweetie.
Do you think I left living at 3 metres above sea level between a river and a lagoon only to go stand on a beach and watch one roll in ?

Besides , I would like to HELP if help is needed in an aftermath.

It seems to be mostly damages to houses and property so far in the nearby cities, and hopefully the death toll will stay low.

I have a near friend living in Viña del Mar near Valparaiso, and I think they should be OK? I couldn't get in contact with him this morning though - some telephone connections seems to be down.

Let's hope the coastlines of Hawaii Islands and the rest of the Pacific will be okey from any possible Tsunami!

Crazy with all these recent Earthquakes!

More photos of the destruction in Chile here and here.

In that site they also say that there are three people missing in Juan Fernández island, and that the island is being looked at from a government aeroplane to get a first idea of the damages.

There is constant coverage on Telemundo. I'm watching it at the moment. Such a horrible mess. 3 hospitals in Chile collapsed.

No problem. Firstly you did not specify you would be looking down from a cliff, you just said you would go down and look, and that implies that you would go down to the beach, so you can't really blame me for thinking that. If people are going to do that, instead of getting to safe ground, go toward the danger, they are idiots. I'm not going to apologise or take that back at all. It just further puts other people at risk, when the rescuers have to go out and save their asses, when they were advised not to be there in the first place.

And don't condescend me by calling me sweetie. Thanks.

The earthquake was almost 8 hours ago, so any tsunami should be appearing in Central America by now, right?

Apparently, 2010 is looking to be the year the earth bellowed and moaned while shaking on its axis? These earthquakes appear to be only growing in their intensity. An 8.8 is over a 1000 times larger than the 7.0 in Haiti.

The quake in Chile was 1,000 times more powerful than the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that caused widespread damage in Haiti on Jan 12, killing at least 230,000, earthquake experts reported on CNN International.

www.nytimes.com...

However, this a serious quake in itself, it is only a shell of another that struck the same area in 1960.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area as Saturday’s quake on May 22, 1960. That quake, which registered a magnitude 9.5, killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the West Coast of the United States.

www.nytimes.com...

Common knowledge claims these quakes are rather normal and are quite severe in the area of the world dubbed by geologists and geophysicists as the "Ring of Fire." It is one of the most seismic and volcanically active regions in the world.

The Pacific Ring of Fire (or sometimes just the Ring of fire) is an area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. In a 40,000 km horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. The Ring of Fire has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes.[1] It is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt or the circum-Pacific seismic belt.

About 90% of the world's earthquakes and 80% of the world's largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. The next most seismic region (5–6% of earthquakes and 17% of the world's largest earthquakes) is the Alpide belt, which extends from Java to Sumatra through the Himalayas, the Mediterranean, and out into the Atlantic. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the third most prominent earthquake belt.

en.wikipedia.org...

This is shocking, considering the recent Haiti earthquake, but ones of this magnitude and higher have been going on since humans crawled out of the primordial goo. All we can do is tighten our bootstraps and help those in situations like this. My thoughts are with those in both Chile and the islands of Japan. Hopefully, there is a reprieve in all these catastrophic seismic happenings, because it is really getting to be much.

Please allow me to speculate on this topic, because it is slowly becoming an area of interest for me. Maybe, we are on the cusp of discovering a new geologic phenomenon? Maybe, this is not as routine as we would like it to be? Perhaps, it is a geologic phenomenon akin to the violent situation that took place during the separation of the once super continent Pangea, some 250 million years ago? It appears there may be an increase in the speed geologic time and movements. In other words, instead of the relative order of things moving at a snails pace as has been the norm for millions of years, there has been an uptick in speed? What is causing the uptick, your guess is as good as mine? Very strange days. I am watching these developments with concern.
