Hi PuterMan,

maybe I didn't word my post too well. I wasn't actually saying it could be worse, only that the size of a tsunami across open and deep waters is a poor indicator of what it can do when it reaches coastlines. It depends in part on the angle of the shelving as it approaches dry land. However, if the wave travels a great distance, it loses energy along the way and so its total energy on arrival upon a distant shore will be less than its impact on regions closer to its point of propagation.

I recall that the tsunami produced by the Jan 26, 1700 mag 9-plus quake off Washington and Oregon by the Juan de Fuca fault's subduction washed inland on those nearby shores at up to 30 metres high, but came ashore in Japan only a few metres high at most (depending on local shoreline conditions). If the reports of a 40-metre wave from this Chile quake are correct (and that seems too big, to be honest), then the wave will be much less than that by the time it reaches Hawaii. But even a metre or so (about 3 ft for US readers) can be dangerous if people are caught unawares, so it's prudent that the warnings and watches were issued.

So, would that be considered an aftershock or a whole new quake? I want to go to sleep, but I'm not able to peel myself away. It just occurred to me that before the age of internet forums, I would just lay on the couch and watch tv until I fell asleep, but now I feel compelled to keep up.

People are adviced to restrain themselves from

but still people are without power. 2/3 in santiago
have some. but further south (near concepcion)
there are people working with the powerlines.

Those sorts of aftershocks are pretty normal. There could even be high mag-7 aftershocks. It wouldn't surprise me. The same occurred after the big quake off Banda Aceh in 2004 they had hundreds of aftershocks. This Chile event was a subduction quake (hence the tsunami) and that huge chunk of sea floor will need some time to settle into its new position. As it does, there will be aftershocks.

Chile's Chaiten volcano under red alert also at this time as per CNN.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but if not then it may be interesting for some.
