I am very very concerned about Hawaii, because they are islands for crying out loud!!!! So many people there live very close to the shoreline. Oh my goodness. I will definitely be following this story.

Wanted to add we had the most humongous thunderstorm and lightening display here at about the same time, dumped bucket loads of rain over a wide area .Our river is still high after flooding last week and the week before , the tide will be reasonably high in the morning, hmm.
Was commenting to my daughter about the unusual thick black bank of clouds out to sea at sunset and all day had these really unusual "sprites" of clouds like spread fingers in a hand going in different directions, we were at the beach and were looking east right across the pacific.

Full moon tomorrow folks.
Hope tonight's events are not a precursor to something worse.

Still reading the thread. Was Chile in the P-Wave of yesterday's quake?

Yes, it was. Travel time for the P waves was around 20 mins.

The data page for the theoretical P-Wave travel times of the mag 7.0 is here

Possible remote triggering event? Could be...

Robinsoe Crusoe Islands:

A 3-meter tsunami wave hit on Saturday the Robinson Crusoe island, the largest in the Chilean Juan Fernandez archipelago, following a powerful earthquake which struck Chile earlier in the day, the country's president, Michelle Bachelet, said. "A village on the island is half-flooded, people have been evacuated to higher elevations," the president said, adding there had been extreme damage from the tsunami

Where do you get that from. As far as I am aware Robinson Crusoe Island is the worst affected and probably will be the only one to be so affected as it was directly in the path. The max in the graphic just posted is 1 m. Do you have a source that says otherwise?

British experts said a tsunami was now radiating from the epicentre towards Hawaii and other settlements on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The extent of the tsunami's ferocity is not yet known, but it has already reached the southern Juan Fernandez Islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile, where it was reported to have caused "serious damage".

An alert was issued by the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre which predicted damage to the Hawaiian coast from 9pm GMT today.

"Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property," the centre said in a bulletin. "All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face."

The centre had earlier issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru, and a tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Antarctica, all of Central America and French Polynesia.

New Zealand also issued a tsunami alert, warning of a wall of water up to 10 feet high, with landfall due there at just after 6pm GMT.

The New Zealand National Crisis Management Centre warning said the greatest wave heights were expected between six and 12 hours after the initial arrivals.

Aust ralia on tsunami watch after Chile earthquake
I'm still trying to catch up on this thread while making calls as well.
Have a grandmother and friend just up the coast, both live shoreline...one metre above flood level !
Even if this alert is downgraded, it all seems very unstable and I'm worried what else might come after.
Full moon, high tides, already swollen rivers and lakes, not good.

Do not rely on Australian news sites for your information, go to the Bureau of Meteorology for specific warnings. Here it clearly shows Australia is under Marine watch only, which means strong current and waves but no real danger to anyone along the coastline.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said "SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT"

If you follow these things as I do, then you will know that this is actually what they often say when there is a threat. They sort of have to really. Note it says COULD. Nowhere in the PSWC data does it says that there will be HUGE damage which was I believe the term you used.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying there will be no damage, only that the reporting of 'huge' damage at this time has no basis.

Looking at the graphic of heights that was posted, this would indicate around 200mm on the main island of Hawaii with maybe some greater heights in the outlying islands.

PS 5.3 just gone off offshore Chile
