I wonder if Georgian forces have crossed into Abkhazia and the Russians are going at them. Do the Abkhazians(?) have Russian passports?

seriously...

Am I the only one who thinks this is all about securing the troop movements to Iran as the US heads a fleet to the region?

This feels like the Cuban missile crisis except opposite sides

I think this is all about Georgia and it's legal/rebel/breakaway regions personally, and I hope it stays that way. The Russians have made noise at the Ukraine and blamed them for their part in the alleged ethnic cleansing, but I don't really see them going to war there as well. If it does go outside of the Georgian borders then I think all bets are off and the likes of NATO won't be able to stand back for fear of upsetting relations with Russia, like they are now.

Seems things aren't going well in Georgia.

Russia Today:

Riots in Georgia during demonstration.

Police officers have infiltrated a TV Station and took it out (IMEDI TV).

People involved in the riot claimed the Georgian president to be like Hitler, and the TV news reader was giving a last message before the police took the channel offline, about how Georgia has become a dictatorship.

And yet again, the Georgian president blames Russia.

State of Emergency declared in Georgia.

And again the rumor about the 76th being deployed in Ossetia, appears to be confirmed by Russia Today.

Currently 1600 dead people.

The Fighting Spreads?

Sky TV has just confirmed that the province of Abkhazia has begun military operations against Georgia.

Now, whichever way you look at it, this is a worrying development for all concerned. Again, I'm going to go and root around for some stuff on this.

Global

Big update: The Georgian President has called on Russia to move its troops out - and he has also just said that the world need to act NOW; that this is about the world order, world peace and global security. His press conference was just on TV.

That makes sense as only now do I remember a blurb on Sky News/BBC News 24 yesterday about the possibility of Abkhazia attacking Georgia as well.

Bro... I think we have to stand back... NO?

I mean this is Russia and Ukraine even was part of Russia..if they want it back and the hold European oil and thousands of Nukes and it's...Russian people and Russian territory for centuries I think prior...

what can we do? We are bogged down as it is...

Nato... is not up to handling Russia with the USA... already busy... and it's populace kind of honestly confused atm... going through...changes shall we say...

WE didn't go after them when it was... Eastern Europe.. literal Eastern Europe Chezeklovokia... not their old territories...

and... don't you think as sick as it is... after what we just did over oil... we aren't in any position to tell Russia what it needs to do to keep itself in power in it's sphere of influnece when we are...halfway around the world doing it too?

and I mean honestly... if it's amore modern slightly freer soviet union...

Got to say it...

weren't we all a bit safer with a power house Russia in that region?

In terms of freaks and fringe nations poping into nukes...

I mean all of this is... because of the power vaccum created at the loss of the Soviet Union...

Maybe they should just... be trusted..give them their dhare, let them deal with Iran and secure... the rest of this crazy region...

We have..done alot, to keep the oil flowing and F'd up alot too....

Maybe we seriously should...embrace and respect a rising Russia again?

Treat them as equals... let them handle some of this..there way...

they did after all...allow us our go so far... they gave us the respect basically aside from UN banter...

Maybe...The USA doesn't have to go every world situation alone...

The Georgian President has also said that now is the time for words to become actions and that Georgia is fighting for its very survival. Bush has also just called on Russia to stop the bombing, to cease hostilities and for all troops to stand down. The Russian special forces are reportedly being sent in. (Sky TV)

On a side note, the Russian expert on Sky just said live on television that 'this is how World War 3 will begin.'

go ahead , american warmongers , go attack Russia and then see the consequences that USA will have to bear

go ahead

While I can't defend my government as being all good.......This "AMERICA IS EVIL.....AMERICA IS A WARMONGER" talk is funny.

Russia is attacking.....shelling....bombing Georgia right now, killing civilians. Russia in World War 2, turned machine guns on their retreating troops. Russia has continuously supplied weapons to less desirable governments and carried out covert acts of aggression against many countries.

And all people can say is how WE are so evil and bad for the world. EVERY MAJOR COUNTRY DOES BAD THINGS and will continue to do them until we destroy ourselves.

and didn't Georgia start genocide against Russian citizens in Ossetia , and 1600 are dead , thanks to NATO backed Georgian Genocide .....

and your USA supports Georiga ,

seems like sufficient proof that USA is evil and Russia must obliterate USa in future for the safety of its citizens and the safety of the world from US aggression

lol Manson... for once I have to agree with you.

Russia...is a powerful nation and power doesn't make wrong..right, but this isn't really wrong either...

We have...nothing, absolutely no right to step in here... Isreal antagonising Russia by advising and making threst is ... moronic on every level...

I am a globalist in the end... I believe the world should be... zoned, comprised of larger nations..with more to loose and less likelyhood of running out of control... (although we are honestly i'd say close) ( and the russians have been plenty of times too)

But... The Russians... I just really wouldn't mind seeing a return of the Soviet Union in some manner...

and I have to say... Isreal is acting at this point... (wont agree on the history) but lately... out of control... local fighting...Palestinians and Jews is one things... it's a small region and a territory dispute and... atrocites have been comitted.. by both sides imho

the world doesn't have to go to war over that situation...

I think frankly as a jew... that region is cursed anyway... neanderthal man and cro magnon man lay in digs together there one group having bashed the others heads in...

It's location... it will always be a bad spot, it's the center of the world...

a cross roads if you will

and frankly... I would never live there... it's soaked in ages of blood...

Buit Isreal acting as a world player... because of it's nukes is... that step too far...it's going where we are afraid and are sure Iran will go...

They were given for defense...not to threaten and try to extort world powers...

Isreal has Zero place advising in georgia against Russia... and, would be wise to play favor with the Russians all things considered

So far people have said three things in this thread.

1) That Russia has attacked Abkhazia (which to my reckoning makes little sense.)
2) That Abkhazia has attacked Georgia (preemptive strike while Georgia was occupied with Russia and South Ossetia?)
and 3) (In the article I linked to) that Abkhazia feared a potential invasion by Georgia.

So which is it?

Georgia has attacked South Ossetia and Russia is now defending South Ossetia and attacking Georgia as well.

Abkhazia has sent troops to the Georgian border, however Russia Today has not said anything about fighting between Abkhazia and Georgia as far as I know.

Mason... I can tell your a bright guy... so ..you know sometimes when that kind of talk is thrown at me... I blow it right back... because you know...I'm insulted and being a jerk back...

But lol... why always...the destroy this destroy that talk...

seriously, we are all human and no one actually needs to be destroyed...

America has made some poor picks of who to back...we back georgia and they... pull this...we backed Saddam and... he goes ape...

Your smart, you know what a war a devestating war in that region means for you... all the radiation in the mideast will blow right over your house...

India will be forced to take sides and in your country I'm guessing that means civil war...

So seriously... aside from... arguing for the sake or arguing... How can you advocate a war between USA and Russia...

You know... we would both blow thousands of Nukes... your life would be aliving hell..if you live at all...

I know the former already, but the latter is less clear. People are saying Abkhazia has now entered the conflict, and whether that's true or how and why it occured if so isn't clear. I can't find any links that actually say Abkhazia has entered the conflict officially. Have they? Or are they just massing forces as you said? This is all really confusing and it seems like it has the potential to get away from everyone too easily for comfort.

Right. Georgia takes down 2 Russian planes without provocation and then starts indiscriminately bombing scores of civilians in the capital Tskhinvali and they want Russia to back down?
www.nytimes.com...
news.smh.com.au...

Regardless of who started the ground offensives in South Ossetia, the Georgians opened up on the Russians first.

I wonder what America would do if Iran just suddenly took down two American F-16's or something? Would they back down?

Bush is a flippin' moron. I'm doubting he even knows where Ossetia is on a map.

Yes, through all of the confusion I think what happened was that Russia bombed areas near Abkhazia, and now Abkhazia has begun military operations against Georgia. At least, that's what I'm getting here.
