Russia was funding and training the separatists in Georgia in claiming the Southwest region of Georgia under Russian control. Georgia wanted it back.

The US trained Georgian military was dominating the Russian trained and supported "separatists" - so Russia had to step in. Now they're going too far.

Lovely, just as oil prices were dropping. That situation right there will more than likely draw a huge amount of attention to this. More so than there already is. Heck, could even bump Edwards off the top spots here in the US.

Honestly, Georgia isn't a big country. This conflict cant carry on at this pace or within a week its population will be like john edwards supporters. Non existant.

Ok, for everyones attention. A reality check. We, yes i said WE, are balancing on a knife-edge here as far as whether the world as we know it is about to take a U-turn. This thread is invaluable in keeping us all up to date with what could be/is a life changing event unfolding in front of our eyes.

The arrival of "couch generals" , and name callers is not needed. Early in the thread it was stated that other than breaking info, go elsewhere and start your own debate thread.

Step out of the surreal world, that is the internet and back into the grave reality that could be unfolding. We are blessed that we are sharing information from many sources on this thread. Lets please just keep it that way and not revert to the usual eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth ideals.

Thanks in anticipation.

I think we can say that today, the violence has started to subside

It actually looks to be getting a lot worse, bro - there's just been an airstrike on a Georgian town that has 'killed scores of people.' The pictures coming in are really quite horrific, they really are.

The two states are now officially at war.

Just heard on Sky News an ammo base of some sort has been hit and bullets are shooting off inside. Plus a Russian Official has told people in South O. They are Russian as they have Russian passports. I'll try and find out what was said as I was looking for my lighter under my bed at the time.

EDIT as I completely missed out what happened to the base

One thing about russia is, they arent all talk like most countrys. They take STRONG action. However it may not be the smartest move, seing as how they know georgia is involved with NATO, and a US allie.

That may have been why they were quick to defend South Ossetia, they probably wanted the world to see so they could be like "uh ohhh looks like the bear is awake yes? DEATHSKI!"

Yes , this is what all rag-headed liberal Iranians from Russia say.

I think that when someone starts to place others in certain "eeevil" groups or categories - that means they lost in an argument.
So i guess you made a lot of great points yesterday.

On topic!
True, but Russia gave these passports several years ago just to have appropriate excuse for exactly such a situation. What if Georgia gave its passports to Chechnians while it was an autonomy and then claimed that Russia attacks its civilians in second Chechen war - it would be OK for Georgia to invade Russia?
It was nothing more then a political tool. If now Russia will give its passports in Crimea - people there will become not citizens of Ukraine and territory not Ukraine?
I can see how death of peace keepers can be used for invasion much more clearly then unsupported and hopefully wrong numbers of dead in S. Osetia, but it is still invasion by Russia.
It does not change the fact that Georgian leaders made a very silly move and not only played in Russian hand, but also got a lot of people killed and a lot more will die. Russia will try to change Georgian leadership and US will back its people there. A very dangerous situation , not WW3 but a new cold war is possible.

According to breaking news from Sky TV, Russia has confirmed at least 1,800 now dead in S. Ossetia, along with worsening violence and 30,000 refugees fleeing south into Russia.

Up from 1200 yesterday... So 2.5% of the population of South Ossetia have been killed... and it's not finish.

Thanks for the updates. I hope Russia go get that bastard who now that he's losing, is crying for his mommy aka the US.

you're gonna take sides like a chump?
you think it's a football game?
you think both sides don't have ardent specific agendas in mind working in unison ?
wake up .
it's bigger
it's not about nationality
it's about profit
it's about setting up the situation for eventual continental Block Nations to be formed.

U.S. this U.S. that.. Russia this Russia that..

and what you're so mindless to think that one nation's direction at a cerain time is identical to it's direction at another???

ease up on the anti-intel plzkthnx.

I just checked on CIA.gov

Georgia has 2.2 million military troops.
Russia has 75 Million.

This is going to end one way. If you know what I mean.

So basically each georgian troop would have to kill 30 russians to make this a fair fight
