South Osetia is Georgia. Russia defends its interests, which is OK, but not people. And in doing so it attacks another country.
Georgia attacked Georgians. Not that different for people that getting killed but different as far as politics and international agreements are involved. I do not remember Russian problems with artillery on civilians in Chechnia.
Russia cannot backdown without retaking South Osetia (a part of Georgia) at least and US cannot let down its ally.
