Russia have responded to Finlands plan to join NATO-

Russia has slammed Finland’s plans to apply to join NATO imminently, claiming it would “be forced” to retaliate if the long-neutral country joined the military alliance.
“Finland joining NATO is a radical change in the country’s foreign policy,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday.
“Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both of a military-technical and other nature, in order to stop threats to its national security arising.”

www.cnbc.com...

That sounds like potential escalation-and one that would include the UK if Finland are retaliated against,as the UK now have a fresh defence pact with the Finns.
It feels to me as though we are inching toward a wider war.

Absolutely correct. The West is edging closer to a full scale nuclear war every day.

Britain needs to stop meddling in the affairs of eatern Europe and let the Slavs sort things out between themselves.

To put it simply the whole inter Slav bickering is absolutely non of our business and best left to sort out for themselves.

The British governments back to hundreds of years ago have screwed up this planet through divide and rule policies. India / Pakistan, Afghanistan, palistine, numerous africa states, east asia, you name it divide up the natives and back one side with dosh and guns. Totally insane and still happening to this day in eastern Europe

The West (whoever that is) did not start this.

Putin needs to stay in his own country.

AGAIN -- this is ALL on Mad Man Putin.

If a nuke is used -- its ALL on Mad Man Putin. NO ONE ELSE.

Did 'the west' invade a non threatening country to steal land?

Is Finland part of russia?

Are internal Finnish policy decisions any of russia's business?

Did Finland make this decision BECAUSE russia returned to it's neighbor invading ways?

Gee, I wonder what could have happened to make them change their longstanding foreign policy.

interesting twitter thread from a Ukranian engineer who precisely identified where the Rusians would try to set up their pontoon bridge that was recently destroyed. he goes into detail, but this stuck out to me...

After one day of combats, 9th May morning the bridge was down. Some Russian forces (~30-50 vehicles + infantry) were stuck on Ukrainian side of the river with no way back. They tried to run away using broken bridge. Then they tried to arrange a new bridge.

Then, Aviation started heavy bombing of the area and it destroyed all the remains of Russians there, and other bridge they tried to make. Rumors say it’s ~1500 RU dead. Their strategic objective was to cross the river and then encircle Lysychansk. They miserably failed.

If the 1500 quote is near accurate, that's a regiment removed from the Russian order of battle.

Effectively they did yes
by arranging the Nazi coup in 2014 and installing anti Russian puppet leadership

So you're in favor of Russia acting as a colonial power over small nations in central Europe ?

😅

Wow. Quite the interpretation of events.

Know what is ironic? By invading Ukraine, Putin has now ensured he has a hostile, strongly nationalistic neighbor in Ukraine.

Putin's invasion united Ukrainians like nothing else could have.

Cheers

For sure the West started this. Let's go back to the mid 80's when the USA puppet master forced King of Saudi to lower oil prices to next to nothing by upping the pump output effectively breaking the finances of the USSR thus leading to its break up into manageable independent states easily coaxed into NATO colonisation. That really happened you know and was the precursor to the edge of nuclear war we stand at today. Probable nuclear death and for what? Getting involved in an inter Slav brotherly disagreement that will sort itsel out and is non of anybody elses interest

Wowzers spot on Cav
and that's another colony sorted for TPTB and another face off leading to nuclear war too. What a tremendous result another colony bagged for the coffers and another step closer to nuclear war

Not to mention causing longtime neutral countries to turn to the West.

Honestly, even if Russia is able to take the Ukrainian coast what do they really end up gaining? They already had access to the Black Sea, so that's not really a gain. They'll get a few cities that they'll need to spend billions rebuilding after their indiscriminate shelling. There's not much else. Plus, they'll have to continue fighting for the gains they've made thanks to guerrilla fighters.

In exchange for that they've shown the world their military is a paper tiger. They've crippled their economy. Possibly for generations. They've made NATO stronger.

It seems like even in victory, Russia ultimately loses.

I understand why Putin continues to be committed to this war but why his generals are allowing it to continue at this point is baffling.

Appears Ukes are concentrating on clearing the Russians from around Kharkiv, their second largest city, trying to get them out of range to stop shelling the city

Anticipate will try to retake Kherson in the south as soon as get forces ready

Wonder if have 5th column organizing in the city considering all the anti Russian demonstrations in the city

May be start an upraising like Warsaw '44, this time have Ukrainian units ready to support them while the Russians are busy

Well, the arguments you make would be more sensible if they took care to distinguish between the aims of NATO and those of the EU.

That doesn't mean I agree with your take. There is a war now because Putin gave an order to invade. However-- I am well aware the EU is an organization that is all about money -- big money.

NATO is something else altogether and includes countries that aren't in the EU.

It is too bad we don't have a couple of afternoons to discuss the ins and outs of history in Europe since 1945. Russia has made its own bed and now doesn't like having to sleep in it.

There was always tension and ideological rivalry. But now -- open warfare north of the Alps for the first time since 1945 -- really marks Putin out as an erratically dangerous person.

Russia Blames 'Fans of Neo-Nazism' for Paint Attack on Ambassador

The annual event on May 9 commemorates Russia's defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 and the end of World War II in Europe. Videos showed Andreev's face covered in red paint.

"Fans of neo-Nazism" are to blame for red paint being thrown upon Sergey Andreev at a wreath-laying ceremony, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman went on social media to address the attack and said it shows that Western nations support a revival of Nazism, according to Tass, the Russian government news agency.

The attack on the Russian ambassador comes as the fighting in Ukraine shows no signs of ending more than two months after Russia invaded the country in late February.

This whole thing is him trying to wind the clock backwards IMO.

That, and being remembered as a great Russian leader.

Those goals are looking more distant now.
