Apparently....

Homosexuality He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, including that men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity and that every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided

Pope Francis 1 Wiki Page

He is tolerant about homosexuality but strongly against same sex marriage.

He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback".[14] In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."[15] He has also insisted that adoption by gay and lesbian people is a form of discrimination against children

I'm VERY HAPPY with the pick.

The Cardinals literally picked a pope from a place as far away from Rome as they could possibly get. And the pope took the name 'Francis' ... after the saint who, in his day, brought the Catholic church back from the brink of destruction. It was in dire condition due to corruption and Francis, through prayerful holiness, who got it back on course.

Excellent choice for pope ... excellent name (and therefore excellent direction for the church).

Definately hopeful ! He'll be cleaning house and getting back to the spiritual roots

An Italian father. But he himself wasn't born in Italy. And lastly, all of Italy isn't Rome, nor vice versa.

And next we'll hear that Francis = Peter??

Until the Troubadour cult of Southern France revolutionized our understandings of women as goddesses, relationships as bonds of love, and marriage as strengthening of those bonds, marriage was really just a social institution and not a religious one.

I still don't understand why religions have to get involved in it. Marriage is just a pompous ritual to satiate the feminine ego in modern times. It does nothing to affirm love or friendship between two people.

Besides, if churches don't want to marry gays, there's nobody saying they should be forced to.

But I'm going off topic.

As an ex-Catholic I am unconcerned for this event. I also do not believe that he will change things in any significant way. I just see another leader who people are going to get their hopes up for to change things only to be disappointed and have their hopes dashed when nothing gets done. Just like Obama.

The "Black Pope" is sort of a derogatory term.. The Jesuits call him the "Supreme Commander". The term Black Pope is derived from the fact that Jesuit priests wore/wear black cassocks to separate themselves from traditional Roman Catholics. Today it is more common to see Jesuit Priests in all black with the Roman collar. The priests were often called "Black Robes" or "Black Priests".

So technically, Pope Francesco is "Black" by religious affiliation and the Jesuit's attempt to separate themselves.

I've always had a sorta ESP in regards to empathy and being able to read people. I have literally been able to determine if a person is of good virtue and a hard worker, or if they're of bad virtue and a terrible worker, after spending less than five minutes with them.

There's something scratching inside of me, trying to tell me Francis I is more than just a merely good man, he's a great man. I know nothing about his history, I'm not Catholic, and I've never really been into a lot of the facets about it. But it was made clear to me that he's going to do incredible things, not just for the church, but for the world.

Take what I just said as you may. I just know what I felt.

I didn't mean there was a connection between the "Black Pope" and Saint Francis.. Just was saying the symbolism of Saint Francis rebuilding or saving the Catholic Church was pretty significant as a choice in name for the new Pope since the Church is currently involved in so many scandals.

The Black Pope is interesting because of prophecies stating the final Judgement will come shortly after the appointed "Black Pope" who would also be the 112th pope from the time of the prophecy. Depending on how you interpret "Black Pope" could mean we are on the brink of the days of judgement.

I'm not really a believer in all of that, as I'm not a Christian or Catholic.. but it's pretty nutty how you can see so many parallels between the prophecy and today.

I think the time of "Judgement" might relate more to the Catholic Church being judged currently for all of the scandalous affairs they're dealing with. Perhaps Pope Francis will change the tides and restore faith in the Church.. It's all speculation of course and I don't know that any of it is true.. Just interesting to analyze.

Lets hope Francesco brings good tidings and unity to people not only of Catholic faith, but of all walks of life.

The Jesuits have always been at odds with the Vatican. The Jesuits question the Vatican's position on homosexuality, birth control, female deacons, and abortion. It should be interesting to see how this plays out in Pope Francis I.

I wish him the best of luck and will pray for him. It's very symbolic that he should choose the name of St. Francis of Assisi, as St. Francis, upon walking into a church that had been broken down, knelt in prayer and heard the Lord say to him, "Repair my church."

I think we're going to be seeing wondrous and amazing things in the coming years.

I am unsure but isn't there a prophecy that states the Dome of the Rock will be tumbled by a great quake and then rebuilt as the seat of the devils throne?

If so there is a duplicity in meaning of exactly why Francis was the name chosen...

Just in case no one has said this:

Petrus is also known as 'rock' I think... need to confirm.

The Jesuits today form the largest single religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church, although they are surpassed by the Franciscan family

Jesuits also wore black Robes and I think today they wear black shirts.????

So:

Does that make a black pope being the rock of the catholic church?

Thats wild... and I think my imagination has taken over....
