If you want to use the low far post forced rebound shot....awsome.....but try not to use it with the wider blueline rushes....just bing 2 men together thru the n-zone to one side and then just snap those hard slappers low far post....the "collapse defense" will ALWAYS GIVE YOU YOUR SET-UP SHOTS so work that play a lot....but keep it simple and the usul way you do it with an UPSPEED man going backdoor for the forced rebound.....remember the key to that play is the timing and because you know the Oiler defense ALWAYS COLLAPSE THE SAME....send 2 men in to one side tight to the boards and 2 men over o the other side late in support ....one backdoor and one dead middle and slightly later .....just attack their blueline at 65% speed with your 2 men and then take the low far post shot very early like you are to use the collapse habit to your advantage but make sure that backdoor man is FLYING IN UPSPEED.....and have you 2nd par of the pair who challenge and cross the blueline go right to the middle ice looking for a DEFLECTION have him try to poke those low far post shos and tip them in to build 2 layers of attack on the fly....remember your zone entry possesion will not be at 100% speed ONLY YOUR BACKDOOR UPSPEED MAN WILL BE COMING IN LIKE LIGHTENING.

When you attack their blueline nice and wide like that do NOT BE AFRAID TO saucer headman it to the middle guy because their defensemens BACKS ARE TO THE PLAYACTIONS .....so they cannot see well......just look for that soft short headman pass dead middle once you have crossed their line with tha nice wide seup....is laughable watching Hall trying to cover the backdoor suppors you are sending in looking for those rebounds...LMAO.....so remember it Hall so pressure him inside and go right to the blue paing earlier on him....hes not strong enough on his skates to defend that playaction if you lean on him and close to the BLUEPAINT BACKDOOR LOOKING FOR A TIP IN....Hall will take penalties or FALL DOWN...lol.

Moma2 threw lot of options out there tonight....but you are doing fine....just keep the well executed forechecking up as you are doing and use various laterally strong blueline attacks ......I would stick with the first se-up Moma2 posed where you bring 2 men over their blueline to one side and exploit the time the collapse defense gives you to take a hard slapper then work the far low post sho/forced rebound to the back door into an UPSPEED SUPPORT MAN .....with the little tweak of hving the inside mn of the pair beaching the blueline fade to the middle with his stick down looking to deflect pucks up simply because he knows the far low post shot is coming.....2 layers of offense.....but it matters no because even that 3-4 mn wide blueline breach is AWSOMELY EFFECTIVE........and might just be what opponents use to brutalise the Oilers bassakwards collapse defense to end this season and drive it away for good.

Talbot plays extra careful against the post and stays in butterfly when the play is behind the net which leaves the top shelf open.

The best part of a collapse style defense is when the puck is turned over in the offensive zone. With no fear of any punishing long range blast from the Oilers, the Wild can also catalyze their transition from blocked shots and stealing long stretch passes. Let's see the Oilers use that collapse system 2 on 2!

Rope-a-dope the Oilers a bit. Keep the game close then blow them away. Leave the young Oilers no time to mentally recover.

Talbot has been pressured lately to watch that top corner since Getzlaf exploited him.......hes always down in his stance to early IMHO and this target should be 20% of possesion focuses because the collapse defense doesnt chase right around the net or they would have to turn so they pull off keep backing in and cover the front which is what Getzlaf read so well.

The Wild are able to adjust very well....they do have a good communication process and have shown they can make quick adjustments.....but they dont use a TSP like the Hawks do and this is another layer of the NHS....one which alone would pick Talbot apart....any Goalie reaally.....lol......I threw a lot of changes out there and the Wild did make 2 distinct adjustments during the later stages of the game they didnt need to do because to many options were thrown at them.....I should have kept i simple and focused only upon the wide lateral blueline focus which was truly the best one tonight although the far low post slapper is tailormade to hammer this silly collapse defense the Oilers use and like I was saying the Hawks or Kings would rip this mess of System Mclellan uses to pieces.

Don't forget the Coyotes hired John Chayka as assistant GM at 25 years of age due to his work at Stathletes last May. After looking at their presentation videos, it appears their metrics are focused on the past four stanley cup winners. Mimicry is one way to learning, but to be dominating, an entire system made of meaningful processes must be in place.

The MIT Sloan Sports Conference just finished last night with Dellows on the panel again. Will be interesting what will be the trends for the next decade of dereliction.

I've only read the first original post of the OP, and will read more on later.

My first initial reactions was,

1. Some ideas can/should be implemented in younger levels of hockey. (Not just NHL)

2. The team that this system runs with must be young (If NHL) but any team at any level trying this level of play must require extreme stamina and recovery time.

-Example...Shooting the puck with entrance over blue line opposed to dump and change. This will take a tole on players endurance.

I hope you find some NHS stuff here interesting enough to incoporate into your work with young athletes.

Moma2 is a big believer in EMPOWERMENT......and the NHS uses EMPOWERMENT OF THE INDIVIDUAL to teach EveryMan/EveryWoman how to Shine their Internal light hard enough and long enough in the same direction that they EMPOWER THEMSELVES AS A GROUP ......which can then be Coached and treated like a single entity .

To build this special recipie for sucess a Head Coach has to learn to learn everything all over again and ACCEPT that this is not extra work.....he or she must LET GO OF TRADITIONAL STATS BASED POISONS AND SUPPORTS.....no excuses available via the advanced/enhanced stats magicians.

Have Nail become that upspeed shooter for you but catalyse it by giving him management capability up high on the point but ask him to not be a conventional point man but to instead be one who CONSISTANTLY skips over to the high 1/2 wall area and threatens a big shot either low far post or top corner tight side....or a BLAST into the zone penerating right to behind the net looking to terminate the PP with a goal[this is where the PP structure must support Nail by having someone eyeballing him looking for his verbal or signal to bust back up high to replace him as he drives in full speed .We want to see 2 Oilers streaking past each other every time our PP Point-Man Nail greenlights himself to bring it in to the net.....remember you dum-dums Nail will be constantly penetrating from the 1/2 wall with support timed to transition OUT for him....sooooo.....dum-dums ......the LATE UPSPEED STUTTER SEPPING OF THE DEFENSE will still be happening because Nail will frequently be sneaking in and out of the high point/high 1/2 wall areas and because of how his supports will be transitioning in sequence with him he will be ENTERING THE PLAYACTIONS AGAINST THE GRAIN AND BECAUSE OF HIS 2-STEP ACCELERATION ABILITY UPSPEED OF EVERYONE.........he will be able to make quick penetrations to the edge of the circle to finish playactions and IMMEDIATLY CUT AND CURL BACK TO HIS HIGH POSITION AT HIS FULL SPEED....Nails skating style is perfect if used this way.....and if the Coaches can set up a KISS transition between Nail and his supports coming ou to cover for him when he penetrates deeply to behind the net.....this transitioning support guy [Nuge-
McDavid-Hall?]will be recieving a LOT of beautifull passes from behind the net so he better make his turn and be skating backwards as he is passing the circle on his way to the top of the zone and be ready to quick-release or oneime passes from Nail which will be lightening quick.A finisher is best as this deep penetration support for Nail on the PP as is sprint speed and on-ice awareness.

This is a high risk high reward PP set-up but with guys like Nuge-Conner-Taylor being the OUTGOING TRANSITIONERS and having their JETS WIDE OPEN IMMEDIATLY and coming straight out of the zone through any open ice to the high zone areas I am not so worried about mistakes and bobbled pucks because we will have an UPSPEED DEFENDER ALREADY HITTING AFTERBURNERS AND PERFECTLY TIMED AND ALREADY TURNED SKATING BACKWARDS IN SHOOTING POSITION OR COVERAGE POSITION READY AND ABLE TO NEUTRALISE ANY PUCKS BEING TURNED BACK ON US.....this IS THE KEYSTONE to how this PP set-up works so Dummy Coaches .get the signals verbal or otherwise SET IN STONE for Nail to give when he wishes to PENETRATE THE ZONE TO GRETZKYS OFFICE.....the Coaches are responsible for getting this timing right and it is critical .

You see JW ....Moma2 liked your old PP set-up but you needed to keep the impetus but rebuild the template to find nother sympathetic dynamic to use to create your originally desired impact.

Now you dont have to worry so much about timing your upspeed late shooter with your original o-zone entry tactics,just get it in find open ice then feed it to Yak and get ready EVERYBODY....to shoot.....let Nail work them from his Point/1/2Wall position he will not waste time he makes lightening fast decisions so COMMUNICATE WITH HIM AND BE READY FOR HIM WHEN HE SIGNALS DEEP PENETRATION.

I would put Nuge on the other Point/1/2 Wall doing the exact same thing transitioning up in support of Nurse on the other side.......PPs are meant to be CASHED IN ASAP.....you are not suppossed play with your food and as Wayne says 100% of the shots you dont take wont go in........so remember NAIL IS YOUR COMPLETE SET-UP PP MANAGER AND EVERYONE SHOOTS OFF OF HIS PASSES NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE.Both PP Point men will be a CONSANT THREAT TO CLOSE ON NET AND BURY IT
AT HIGH SPEEDS.Nurse would be a good fit on the left as long as his COMMUNICATION with his transitioning support is timed right.... with his 2 stride ice coverage,he is shooting awfully quck when he penetrates.

I would be looking for Nail and Nuge to basiclly be punching pucks deep into the zone ASAP and making crisp complete deadly fast transitions or positional exchanges .....quick-strike PP offense KISS management,yes you know we are coming,and know it is to overpower you not finesse you...know that well and for 60 minutes....because its time to bring back the BANG in the Oiler PP.

No Sekera running these transitions ok? Not enough speed coming back out.Not evasive enough to slip in and out or big enough to bul his way through...sorry Sekera the 3-on-3 jhonny on the Spot stuff doesnt fool Moma2 eye-test....lol....you have vetran nerve and know more when NOT TO MOVE positionally....bu this PP set-up needs Rocketmen or Bulls like Darnell .

Leons not being optimised........he need Kassian and McDavid on his wings......he needs to enter the zone or the right side with Conner using Conners speed as a weapon by consistantly setting up rushes with Conner coming in UP-SPEED from behind, 2 steps behind Leon just as they approach the transition point into the o-zone.....THREATENING A PUCK HANDOFF where Conner rips past Leon who has already taken the puck thru the n-zone and has already set the defense into their structure and stuttered them for McDavids UPSPEED zone attack........ this is he Bread and Butter o 60% of possesion playaction focuses......and have Leon own the inside lane to the middle as they atack thier right side of the ice so Conner can CROSS-OVER TO HIS LEFT AGAINST THE GRAIN AS HE LIKES TO DO TO ADD A BREATH OF OCTANE TO HIS FUEL-MIX on his rushes. If Conner simply watches Nuge he wil learn how to execue ELITE LEVEL NHL TAKEAWAYS which with his speed will pay off trremendously because only on takebacks can an offensive player with naturally strong N/S speed and instincts be OPTIMISED and be TRULY FREE TO WHEEL AND DEAL DAMAGES IMMEDIATLY because a takeaway usually happens where the opponents least expect or want it and usually gives you a free pop at their net and at scoring a goal without System Supports in Superman fashion which everyone loves to see .... and if he watches Leon he will learn how to protect pucks and get off quick high% passes from pinchpoints.[ I want Conner using his speed to get to the places others are conventionally forced into EARLY looking to exploit the incoming defensive structures ,to get where they are trying to force him EARLY and be more anticipatory with his thinking or add the 3rd layer of on-ice vision Nuge has].......I will be looking for both of these things in Conners game as the season winds down because he needs to EXPAND HIS ON-ICE VISION and to do so he must taste NHL timing and habits in NEW SCORING DYNAMICS so Moma2 wants to see Conner learning to build his offense out of things other than N/W speed with a middling backhand shot on net or a basic pass and immediate cut to his left side backdoor .We want to see more patience in Conners game and more anerobic management from him in specific games , Moma2 wants to see him mirroring his linemates strengths so he can learn their habits and how they see the ice and vice-versa.....I want to see Nuge AND Conner AND Nail all watching some videos of Wayne Gretzky slapshots because these Oilers have the speed to build gaps big enough to use Full-Slappers or 3/4 Slappers a lot more than they are doing now.


Conner I made a comittment to breaking down your game before the season was over and I have been doing this piece-meal....I havent covered your speed transition habits and the secondary and tertiary areas of the ice and defensive sructures you prefer to attack and you lean towards and how you come out of these dynamics consistantly looking for the same Goaltending habits or your puck/body seperation habits you have which you execute while you are making your shot selections on-the-fly ........I have simply pushed you away from your two most visible habits which will be used against you consistantly sooner than you think.....and allowed you to fall forward into a few hnd-picked sympathetic dynamics....Moma2 has never done anything anti-oiler and breaking your individual game down without building it back up higher is anti-oiler....so Moma2 has "steered you" in some generic directions drawing opponents attention to center chest center body-mass drive through hits brings the SAFEST contact you can experience in the NHL and encouraging opponents to simply stop your N/S momentum was critical to encourage you to begin seeing things at NHL speeds from outside the window .....when you are stonewalled you see everything flashing past you when you lose your momentum and you MUST GROW YOUR ON-ICE VISION..... so the lesson here Conner is that your Moma2 will never precipitate anything detrimental to your Oildrop Logo.......even when you feel like something negative is being done.....just relax and work harder like you have done so you can look harder like you have also now done and you will see what the word anticipatory really means.....lol.....if Moma2 would have told your Coaches how to teach you bupkiss would have happened so the path of least resistance was to post up accurate impactfull ways for your opponents to pinch your wings back in areas which would encourage you to evolve in specific areas you need immediate growth in....without involving your Coaches or their pocesses....lol.....as we cans see and you can feel in how you are defended by opponens the data posts ARE widely disperrsed and are followed closely in real-time by many teams....because....even my advice on how to encourage you to grow was accurate and impactfull.....and your opposition very well knows this,they took what has been working and just didnt see the end result Moma2 was gunning for down the road....lol......yes this recently catalysed stop-Conner focus by managing his N/S momentum and stutter stepping him once has been effective.....but now you will diversify on-the-fly quicker than you would have and begin viewing or visualising developing NHL speed playactions differently before past habits begin to control you and your evolution .We just brought you the heat a little sooner than it had to come....lol.

Lots of information to comment on.

The best way is to make an analogy to another sport, boxing. While there are many types of strategies available, the two primary types of fighters are an in-fighter and an out-fighter. The in-fighter can absorb the blows while returning even more devastating punches. An out-fighter relies on footwork, technique, and speed to reduce and avoid harm while striking at key opportune times. This is dictated by the inherent physical abilities and the temperament/mindset of the individual. From this, all adjustments are made to support the strategy (equipment, training..etc).

While not completely analogous to the cycle and the rush, the cycle keeps sustained puck possession in a 5v5 setting, while the rush will require puck management of the possession/transitions. The rush turns a 5v5 situation into a 3v3, 2v2, 1v1, or odd man scenario. NHS provides the ideal and most efficient solution in solving these issues. Other methods are possible, but IDA and IDM techniques will prove supreme.

The adjustments suggested by one4All are adjustments to support rush style attack system to reinforce how incompetent management is at assessing hockey systems and hockey players.

There are many definitions of "possesion" and many methods of attaining and maintaining it and also of finalising it.
