This is a very grounding point in the season , Players will be moving after the break as playoff dynamics materialise and evolve. The current roster
contains some very versatile players and more of them than the status quo fanbase may realise carry enough value to be aggressively pursued by the
right teams at the right times. The funny thing about a losing season is that certain types of Players simply go out and give the same level of effort
and production on a consistant basis through the season winning or losing type .
This dynamic seperation from the Players who lag and roll through the season is what attracts the Sharks to the scent of Blood in the water,it is a
time to be thinking from a position of if not equality then power in negotiating Player moves.Thee happen to be some very very consistant producers
and performers on the roster current league statistical results aside the individual stats on many fronts show some very sellable assets present and
accounted for. These are the players that Playoff-Bound teams can correctly valuate and imagine plugging right into their own rosters to make definable
and supportable improvements, the consistancy that these few players provide makes them very stable assets to negotiate with.
So take some extra pictures of the group for olde times sake and prepare for the major parts of next years reconstruction to start right now while
there exists a consistant position of negotiating equality or power from a dynamic perspective.
There is an extraordinarily high number of NHL ready players coming up and they all deserve their opportunitys to make the roster, players like
Moroz,Kleffbom,Nurse,Marincin, and a few others that could very well step into Dallas Eakins compete/performance/slash coaches disgression player
managment system, this structure in all fairness DOES force a results based self-analysisi from every player,no one can leave his office feeling ripped
off or claiming misconduct, because the results speak for themselves and you will be bringing the exacts same data into the office as he already has in
his In-Box on the desk.
If you can properly complete the fitness and endurance standard requirements and can play a competative mistake free brand of hockey then you will
likely have a coach supported shot at making his roster,I believe Eakins would push things to get a man who was ready be the established standards and
contractually available onto his roster if the man passed Muster in all areas.
We have seen a lot of players come through over the last ten years, but this is a more stable time in the Franchises history, our offense is set for
years to come,we are really waiting for defensive prospects to emerge, but now we have an issue we couldnt have expected,to many men are ready early
and would benefit from playing on the NHL roster next season.Toss in a few forwards we cannot hold back anymore and we have a lot of leverage on the
trade front to be frank,Players like Lander and Arcobello cannot really be held back now as they have already developed NHL resumes, and they are
performing at NHL standards.Guys like Mitch Moroz like it or not deserve the chance to snowball their own growth and evolution into some opportunity
in the NHL early in my opinion.
The real defining factor in how the decisions to promote will boil down to toughness, because the lineup will require a high degree of energy and edge
toughness is a primary concern in any tweaks to the core or roster in general,we cannot lose a single pound of grit at this point,it can only be
addition from here on in to maintain a correct developmental focus.Moroz can be tough,he fits the bill perfectly.Out of the D-Men there is skill but
not the maturity or size to carry the grit component unless there is a surprise or two out there we dont know about. We have big kids but they are very
lean and more skill types or undersized right now and only time can cure that enigma. We also need knuckle busters on the blueline as well so there
really needs to be a grit quotient that is maintainable offered by anyone hoping to crack the lineup. The willingness to fight opponents if needed to
enable you to fight your teammates internally for a job is a solid driver towards excellence.
I see the potential to lose Ference[exp],Hemsky[exp, impact],Smyth[exp],Gordon[exp, impact],elder Schultz[exp],Jones[impact],either
Goalie[exp, impact],players who carry definable and consistant impacts. There are others but there are also standards set around certain assets unlikely
to be met by other teams right now.
What NHL Playoff team wouldnt want an Eberle available from the 3rd line to step up and score a triple-overtime winner? And who in their right mind
thinks that anyone on the ice BUT Eberle would score under that type of pressure? But who can afford his high price? There are a few teams who
could.Same with Gagner, who wouldnt want his offense, his years of experience, these things are now tilting because he is very much a veteran player and
his mistakes are calculated risks most times,he is not being caught unaware of danger,in a specific and limited role he would be a gamechanger in the
playoffs because he will produce somwehow with his instincts experience and creativity.Hemsky can score anywhere at any time and has proven it,he
thrives under pressure and it elevates his game.Gordons Faceoff abilitys are established,so show me one puck-possesion type team that going into the
playoffs doesnt want him on their roster right now getting comfortable? He is a very valuable asset right now both to our future and opponents playoff
hopes.
Yes there could be some very big changes just around the corner, but as the olde saying goes.Same horse, different Rodeo".
I dont see any major assets being traded after the break, those will need to come from Free Agency pick-ups,but I can see the current roster being
gutted and Mac-t really letting things open up roster wise.Any Player who gets a sniff from the bottom two lines will be gone in a heartbeat and only
the core is safe now, this must be done because of the weaknesses needing to be addressed and because of internal pressure for roster spots nobody
anticipated accurately.
When a G.M is in an overall position of equity or power from a negotiating perspective, there is the potential for sweeping moves or sweeping
inaction, but drastic swings in structural components can certainly be actioned under this circumstance.
What few fans are considering is the progress made this season that is not given its fair or due attentions.
It took this long, but dallas and the roster have finally defined what is to the group considered basic hockey, together coach and players have come out
of the deth-grip they had on each other and have defined basic hockey under their own collective terms and parmeters, this has been great nes to see
over the lst 15 games. Now that they have a ground zero basic platform to rely on and work off of I can see the potential for great progress in terms
of communication and implementation of what the coach wants to try out.The team has established a fall-back position within their system execution and
can ow begin to build their own identity and basic building blocks within Dallases frme of thinking.
The entire roster now recognises danger and identifies the same pressure relief opportunitys, they are adjusting to their coaches perspective and
style, which as we are now seeing has great dividends to be collected if you stick with him long enough and dont chew him up.All he was trying to do
this season was in short"teach everyone how to recognise and reat to danger the same ways at the same times".That is really all the poor ellow was
trying to do,but he got caught up in the olde "defense first" bandwagon/quicksand cycle of events.
And the entire band started playing to their own tunes trying to get back onto his page of music. No harm no fould, everyone can be friends now,but
jeepers what a hard way to get the job done in a lot of ways, its just communication and clarity man not rocket science. You could have talked this into
the men in the first two weeks of the season.
The constant system adjustments were playing havoc with the players abilitys to read and react to danger instinctively and at high speeds,NHL
speeds. No harm no foul,it was the learning curve for the coaches.
Kudos to Eakins for being able to hold onto the reins of all of the raging horses with both hands and stop the speeding Stagecoach just before it
tipped over the Cliff edge.
A baseline has now been established,so lets everbody recognise that and begin a fair charting and assesment of just what Eakins and his coaches and
the roster can accomplish working under more normal NHL circumstances. Now that everyone is on the same page and of that there is no doubt,we have
witnesses consistancy displayed for long enough to be confident that communication is there, now the assesment and examination can really begin, the
honey-moon is over for the coaches and the players,we will finally see what they can accomplish together as a group when on the same frequency.
It doesnt matter how many players move in transactions post-break because the entire room understands the baseline they have reached with the Coaches
System and intentions, they can teach newcomers quickly as a group and Dallas is still frothing at the mouth from the first half-season go-round so he
is all warmed up to keep the Welcome Wagon rolling.
My personal pet project is Moroz,he looks like he is ready to step in and have an impact right now and I would like to see him get the chance,I
believe he will perform like Arcobello did, very very well.He will make it tough to not play him.He will turn potential into a coaches decision which
should be every young players dream and every players goal.
As I maintain, toughness that is natural or that can be manufactured every night is required from here on in,and that is a major part of competing in
the NHL with motivated men playing for their livelyhoods and familys. It is serious business and not everymen is ever ready for it mentally,it is more
serious and dangerous job than a game in the NHL.If you cannot handle the rigors game in and game out you are not ready, there are no spots available
for trial runs, every time you play an NHL game you are auditioning for your real lifes work,in the moment,no free rides, there is a tremendous amount
on the line and the opportunitys needs to be taken seriously by the rookies, coaches and veterans, the ride should not be all cherries and cream, the
vets should know their jobs are directly on the line and be deadly serious and businesslike about their behaviour around the rookies, and the coaches
should know that they are derelict if they do not promote a deserving rookie over vet who cannot match their production.
There must be a decent level or respect shown to the career aspirations of all players in the organisation,Arcobello for example,he has established
solid NHL baselines and is of the age where he can make solid career choices if we are not going to play him in the NHL,he has earned a trade or to be
played, there are others like this who need to know there will be a timely and fair reward for their extra efforts when they make and maintain and NHL
pedigree for themselves through effort and consistancy of results.Their collective goal should be to play in the Big League not simply on the Big
Team. They need a bigger horizon then just the Big team to look at as they run through their career paths.
It will be an interesting end to the season, and i am sure we will see things surprise us all,I pesonally predict another huge offensive night for an
Oiler soon rivaling or bettering Gagners Big Night. My money is on Sam again, but now that there is a solid system baseline being followed the potential
is again there to see it happen,as long as the roster can play the same way for 60 minutes these nights can happen,it is system consistancy first that
makes it all possible.Someone has to take at least 4-6 shots and make 4-6 scoring assists. So PP time is critical.Hall could maybe pull it off before
seasons end just to show how valuable his explosive and relentless offense would have been for Team Canada this year.Taylor can bring it for 60
minutes with lethal intentions.Gagner is a balanced attack cerebral and physical for 60 minutes, but Hall is a literall NHL caliber force of nature out
there and he can do it for 60 minutes.
I see it coming ,and it is the system execution becoming consistant that will be enableing it to happen.Once the coaches figure out that the dumping
out of the puck is a placebo for the old fastbreak zone exits they will probably re-institute them due to Dallases familiarity with the tactics. If you
are winning faceoffs consistantly then you can use set fastbreak plays with consistancy and bust games open from your own end.Or you can simply dump
pucks out and control the games momentum that way,its a matter of taste I guess.
Faceoffs catch everyone collapsed at once, this is the dynamic breeding ground for speed demons to thrive in,every time you can get players bunched
close together then flat-out footspeed becomes a MAJOR determinant in who gets pucks and control of critical ice surface and lanes to the net.Faceoffs
are as good a set play offense based on speed as you will ever get, considering opponents have no speed of their own and no time to guage or react to
closing distances and times.
You dont need to change your entire defensive posture to fast-break thinking to expoit fast-break set play opportunitys catalysing from face-off wins
if you are practicing them and are prepared.
Just something to work on after the break, faceoffs are an exciting part of the game and there has never been enough attention or credit given to them
or their intrinsic value to the game itself. They are as close to the true definition of a gamebreaker as there is in hockey considered in its purest
form.
