They where blocking a through fair, The policeman had every right to remove the people blocking the common path, (as I am sure he and several (verbally) others did multiple times). peaceful protest does not include interfering with the passage rights of the people commuting.
These individuals where attempting to make maryters of them selves. They where doing these actions to get attention, although they where breaking the very laws the supposedly protect.edit on 19-11-2011 by mileysubet because: (no reason given)

Video of the students silently protesting Chancellor Katehi as she walks to her car. This is one of the most powerful forms of protest I have ever seen.

They could have easilt arrested those people one-by-one with twist-ties.
or they could have moved off the path when told to - their choice, but with choice comes repercussions.

We should all do as we are told by the authorities.

A protest needs to draw attention, but it should not impede the normal flow of traffic. Its is really that simple.
It is not always about "protest".
If a group of people without a clear definition was to impede the flow of traffic in any through fair they would be arrested, and if they did not move to the warnings of the LEO's then an escalation of force would be used to remove them.
Thisi is what happened here, the people in the video clearly and delibretly chose to disobey local ordinances and where pepper sprayed to be removed.

I'm looking, but not having much luck. Could you hook us up with a source for the "filling students mouths with pepper spray" stories.
"Without any provocation whatsoever, other than the bodies of these students sitting where they were on the ground, with their arms linked, police pepper-sprayed students" wrote Nathan Brown, an assistant professor in the college's English Department, in an open letter to the chancellor.
He said that police then used batons to separate the students, kneeled on their bodies and pushed their heads to the ground.
"When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats," Brown wrote.
