"Thinking these protestors wanting to make a little noise is more important than the safety of the officers is ignorant."

If enough people start "thinking" like you do here, we will soon be in a full blown police state. No kidding. The safety of officers was never threatened. That will be a lie put forth by the university to defend its brutality. There is simply NO DEFENSE WHATSOEVER for the police, for the chancellor who ordered this attack, and for all the people here who think this is acceptable! It isn't acceptable on any level, and I repeat, it is this kind of thinking that leads to full blown FASCISM. The police are here to PROTECT and DEFEND US citizens, not ATTACK them for entirely legal, peaceful, and rational dissent.

Sorry for the all the capital letters, but I am alarmed at comments like this. I feel that we are on the verge of civil war in this country if your defense of brutality, criminality, and sheer fascist tactics are the norm amongst the populace. Thank God most of the people here seem to apprehend on an instinctive level that this is criminal and morally repugnant.

They where blocking a through fair, The policeman had every right to remove the people blocking the common path, (as I am sure he and several (verbally) others did multiple times). peaceful protest does not include interfering with the passage rights of the people commuting.

These individuals where attempting to make maryters of them selves. They where doing these actions to get attention, although they where breaking the very laws the supposedly protect.

So your saying people should be pepper sprayed instead of others having to walk on the grass 5 feet on either side???

Why do you think people do these things? To get a message across. But instead you would ignore any message made by anyone if they are trying to spread said message in any other fashion than one that would, in fact, spread that message...
yeah....
hypocrite...

There was a little danger to officers concerning "pepper spray blow back" but a couple extra PSI's took care of that.

CNN is reporting that the cops are defneding their actions on the basis that "they were concerned about their safety" (the officers' safety).

Does that jive with the video? I don't think so.

It was a reporting by Time magazine from a link on a CNN article, now gone. It's out there, you'll find it. Some who were arrested recieved pepper spray in the mouth.

Time to wake up to the fact that the police commit offences all the time and get away with it.

Why? They are just people like us. They should be accountable.

The answer is that they protect their own.

It is safer to ask your nextdoor neighbour to help you than to invite the police into your life.

I have witnessed police abuse (by a cop whose brother was in Black Power - that is a huge criminal bikie NZ gang) against my son, who was in a terrible state of mind - this criminal banged my son's head very hard against a tree while my son was handcuffed and being marched to a police car. And why was this man even in the police force? Because they want to recruit insiders.

And I know for a fact that a big drug dealer here is protected because he is a police informer.

So, before your involve any cops in your life, think very carefully.

A protest needs to draw attention, but it should not impede the normal flow of traffic. Its is really that simple.

It is not always about "protest".

If a group of people without a clear definition was to impede the flow of traffic in any through fair they would be arrested, and if they did not move to the warnings of the LEO's then an escalation of force would be used to remove them.

Thisi is what happened here, the people in the video clearly and delibretly chose to disobey local ordinances and where pepper sprayed to be removed.

By your type of reasoning we should have never boarded ships to toss tea in the harbor. We should have stayed off the docks and quietly protested in the woods. Until. The redcoats came out claiming it was the queen's woods and they would be put in the stocks for not getting a permit from the local Governor.

I tell you what. This is my damn country and I value decent and sincere people. Most of us do. We don't value thieves and horrible people that use every damn lame excuse in the world to perpetuate their thievery and attempted enslavement.

I don't care what corporation, government entity, or otherwise lackey tells me to stay off the grass. Maybe a traitor who serves these kind of people needs pepper spray in his eyes. Perhaps some plastic cuffs on his wrists?

Videos like this used to get me so angry I could barley contain myself. The old me would have wanted to tackle that pig. But then I realized this would make me no better then them and this ideal of peace would be lost. Now when I see people in these types of videos where they are constantly abused, but then disregard this cruelty and continue to protest peacefully, I no longer see the evil. I see hope.

Well all I can say is, at least they didn't get cuffed, tazered, and executed with a bullet behind their head.

RIP Oscar Grant

"Without any provocation whatsoever, other than the bodies of these students sitting where they were on the ground, with their arms linked, police pepper-sprayed students" wrote Nathan Brown, an assistant professor in the college's English Department, in an open letter to the chancellor.

He said that police then used batons to separate the students, kneeled on their bodies and pushed their heads to the ground.

"When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats," Brown wrote.

Which one the guy that killed Oscar Grant?
He got off on involuntary manslaughter he served about 1 year in jail. Before trial he served around 150 days, but the judged gave him DOUBLE time served so he was out quick. His day in court was in late 2010. He got out this past summer.

I guess people actually bought his lie that he thought he had his tazer in his hand (why he would need to even use a tazer is beyond me). He was a cop, he knew the different feel between his gun and his tazer.

The reaction to these types of videos make me sick. People say it was a peaceful protest. But how do you know? Where is the five minutes leading up to this event? For all we know they threw bricks and then sat on the ground. Get all of the facts in the case before you pass judgement, and unless you were physically there you can not possibly know the truth. Witnesses lie on both sides. Police to protect their actions, protesters to protect their cause.

It is police policy to convey messages about their actions prior to events like these. The protesters could have been warned for an hour straight to move or get maced. Did that happen? They were definitely warned. Why? The protesters were shielding their faces prior to the spray even being pulled out.

As for walking around the chain, what about people in wheelchairs or crutches? Have you ever tried to travel on grass in a wheelchair? I bet not. Could they have asked for the protesters to move? Of course. But would they have moved? Who knows? Maybe so, maybe not. I don't know these people and I don't want to.

Blocking any path that could potentially cause discomfort or inconvenience to the masses should result in removal. Majority rules. Deal with it.

It is safe to assume that we have the story as no conflicting accounts have surfaced. The police defended their actions citing only disobedience as the cause. If you read the article you would see that the reason they gave from the start was that they were spraying them because they wouldn't move. No other reason given. It wasn't a battle, it was methodical.

We do know what happened here. It was 100 percent. This wasn't a regular Occupy protest, but one on a college by students. They risk their education and tuition if they are violent. I wish you would have researched before jumping to your conclusion.

My point exactly restated by you. People don't always know the whole story. This was an intentional emphasis to that fact. I am not specifically slamming reactions to this video alone but to all videos where the beginning is mysteriously missing. This is a tactic used to bring a stronger emotional response. Psychology 102. Educate yourself on everything that happens on both sides. Many reactions I read from this site and others offer people's emotional response as opposed to an educated and informed one.

Wow. Never seen a line of people get pepper sprayed by police, while sitting and get sprayed in the mouth and hospitalized and vomiting blood... Did the police have prior knowledge what spraying inside their mouths would potentially do? Didn't realize this was within a cops authority to spray in the mouth. Glad im NZ where the cops are a little more chilled. Just the odd ecstasy trade scandal and a drink driving offense. sigh... stupid police
