Sure looks like a long slender plane then...

Yes that is a plane... what you think is a long slender missile is merely the darker in the earth's shadow portion of the contrail. both of those pictures are know airplanes making contrails

No media ever claimed they were missiles

If you think that one is a missile....

Earth's shadow portion ?? I wasn't saying its a missile, but it sure does NOT look like a plane.

More like a rocket.

Wow...you took those yesterday?..
Well the flight pattern of that object is quite missile-esque....
Or some acrobatic jet doing some nice maneuvers..
Hmm...anyone on this one?

Boss the Plane, the plane. Anyone remember Fantasy Island?

Sorry, just had to type that in to liven up the thread a little. Not
directed at anyone in particular.

Was it China?

i'm very doubt of it: first & foremost, very doubtful moment of their capability to be so close at US shores; 2ndly, what is reason to launch missile?
that would be no more than idiotic challenge to USA because they can Nothing to withstand nuke assaults from uncle sam

They have shown up before. and they do have the capabilities... The only possible motive may be over trade disputes and the feds possible release of $600 billion which will devalue the dollar, Taiwan and other serious issues. China is not happy at all with US direction... Possibly a harmless warning shot, triggered an automatic defensive interceptor launch... And maybe it wasn't the only time... Remember Phoenix?

Don't underestimate the Chinese!

That said, it is still less likely than other theories.

Still no official conclusive government reports on what this was yet?

Nice catch! Photo's like this will definitely show the 3 dimensionally challenged people how a jet liner can appear to be going "straight up".

I'm still on the fence with the original footage of the mystery "thing" in the sky... I'm leaning towards plane, but thats only going by photo's Zorgon and Phage have produced.

But keep in mind their photo's prove nothing. Just because planes can appear exactly like the mystery plume, so can Rockets!

YEP, I almost took pictures of that too. It was around 10:45am? It was a plane. I watched the plane make it.

rocket engines are waaayyy hotter than plane engines
and the heat signature from the rocket engine
is noticeable in the comparison. It's a MISSILE !!!

Gosh, I didn't know news cameras recorded IR as well as visible?

I didn't even know helo windows were transparent to IR.

I still don't know that, despite you claiming it.

Where can we find evidence for this claim?

These networks are not connected to any external network, they are isolated internal systems only methinks

Here's a video of a space shuttle launch from 35 miles away.

Any similarities?

www.youtube.com...
There are some striking differences, the video you posted gets brighter as it goes higher, the video off the coast of CA does the opposite, it's getting darker.

The shuttle also has a much brighter rocket exhaust instead of just a faint red glimmer we get in the CA video which may just be a reflection of sunlight.

Do you think they are similar?

My first assessment I found was the likely one. Then after a few more minuets of study, conversations here being read and the clueless news peoples comments I can say I believe with a 99% certainty it is a commercial jet at about 40K+ creating a pressure vortex behind it with a bit of exhaust from the jet engines that at that altitude condenses the air into a vapor. We call that a simple contrail. After the aircraft leaves it's trail, the air pressure is released and depending on conditions will readily dissipate or spread out. It spreads faster if winds or other conditions exist that smear the clouds. Some contrails turn into large cloud banks that persist also. So that is why it is so wide at the bottom, giving the optical illusion that the bottom is closer. From what I observe, the trail goes behind the clouds in the foreground that are likely 20-30 thousand feet, discounting any notion it is a local position for the trail.

I have, as a field investigator and as a photographer who loves sky and related imagery, photographed very similar effects. I have some that look like UFOs, others like rockets. I have observed and photographed launches from Vandenberg while I was in Death Valley, hundreds of miles down range. I have seen launches through large 12-17" telescopes many air miles (175-250mi.) from VAFB I have also been to a launch of the last Titan at VAFB. So I have a small bit of experience in determining visual details to assign to event images.

Where I live I regularly observe and photograph flights crossing, outbound and inbound from three major international airports in Northern California, and use binoculars, telescopes and zoom lenses in determining any anomalous sky events. I might take a shot of this if I saw it, but only as a note of interest. I have several I've shot over the years somewhat like it.

The angle of the sun, altitude of the aircraft, relative temperature, humidity at the aircraft altitude, plus the observer's viewpoint can make some dramatic images. This I believe is one such event, misinterpreted.
