I don't think its done yet

All Earthquake activity went dead on equake for me for about 3 hours. I bet she comes out swinging after the breather.

We just took a pretty good jolt at yellowstone in GEE, looks to be at least a 3 or more, we'll see in a minute when it comes up on USGS....

ETA: 3.9 downgraded to 3.7

That definitely lit up every station in the park in GEE...hmm.

Wow, am I trippin or did I just see 3 different 3.5+ in a span of 20 minutes or less?

:\

Edit: Or did one of them just change? Resulting in only 2?

Don't put your drums up just yet...
Two of the strongest EQ's just happened minutes apart!

Wow! Consecutive 3.5+ quakes. If you plot these you dedintely get a gradual increase in strength over the last couple of weeks! Scary stuff

Just for the record, the combined seismic energy of the last 3.6 and 3.7 magnitude earthquakes alone is over 60% of the combined seismic energy of all previous earthquakes occurred in this swarm combined together.

In dimensionless approximate numbers:
Energy of M3.6+M3.7 = 600,000
Energy of all previous earthquakes combined: 1,000,000

Good morning/evening Shirawaka

Re your figures above, do they lead you to conclude that the main event has occurred or that "we ain't seen nothing yet"? We're nearing the 3.85 that was the largest quake in last year's swarm, aren't we? If that's achieved, are we then into the realms of a more than notable swarm?

Sorry - questions, questions!

Thanks.

Hi,

Although the magnitude of the strongest earthquakes appears to have increased overtime, I can't say for sure if there is an actual pattern or not. The energy/number of earthquakes charts I can make from ANSS databases still show very incomplete data and are updated to yesterday evening USA time (Mountain Time).

The largest earthquake during the last big swarm was M3.87, which alone has the energy of the last M3.6+M3.7 earthquakes combined.

Chart updated to yesterday (local time):

I think the three daily "bursts" of seismicity you see in these charts are probably only due to different seismologists working on cataloging earthquakes from those days (they clearly haven't finished yet) around bigger events. Still Incomplete data, as there have been many more earthquakes inbetween.

I see what you mean about the bursts - definitely looks like data entry bursts - but I do see what looks like an increase in both magnitude and frequency... not that I know what to make of that... except it's not over yet.

By the way, for comparison, on November 1985 the largest earthquake swarm ever recorded on Yellowstone occurred at about the same area, lasted three months (with over 3000 events), and had a maximum earthquake magnitude of 4.9. So what is currently occurring is still "nothing", speaking of both number of earthquakes and energy released.

It appears that there was another one, this time at 2.6:

Ah, you read my mind - I was searching for exactly that information

I live along the Great Alpine Fault on the South Island of New Zealand and we've seen a huge increase in quake IQ announcements recently and an unusually low number of quakes tbh - announcements probably due to Haiti - but it still piques one's interest somewhat in the topic.

Do you live in a quake-prone zone?

I don't exactly live in a quake-prone zone, although a few years ago I experienced a M4.5 earthquake occurred about 18 Km distant from my home and it wasn't a very pleasant experience.
