Russia seems to be going too far though. They are amassing alot of troops and continue air raids deep inside Georgia.

To what point will NATO say enough is really enough and none of this spineless Jellyfish talk? Russia isn't listening.

NATO will be about as respected as the UN is if Russia is allowed to take over Georgia.

I was wonder just how it was being threatened.

Bombs? Russia wouldnt take them over, destory them, perhaps.

Turkey is there to remind Russia no to go to far. Turkey represents NATO in this matter.

Someone on this thread said Turkey ain't in NATO.
Well they are.So you are right.Turkey is a NATO presence here.

There is no breaking news on either Sky News or BBC NEWS 24 which is odd as there has been breaking news all day. Last bit of information to come out was Russian troops waiting until dawn to commence operation. Anyone know what time dawn is in South Ossetia and other possible areas of conflict?

It is already morning there. The quiet atmosphere indicates that both sides are reorganizing and regrouping - in preparation for the day's actions.

In lastest news Russian troops hold Tskhinvali, and are entrenching in defensive positions south and east of the city. This may mean they are not going to go any further, or they may just be awaiting further back up from Russia.

The Zarskay road into Russia is also now in Russia's and S. Ossetian militia's hands. This will allow back-up and humanitarian aid to enter from Russia.

And all seems to be quiet on the Abkhazia front as well. No report whether Abkhaz troops succeeded in uprooting Georgian positions in the Kodori Region.

NATO and the US, I think, can't really do anything but stand by at the sidelines and watch.

Much like the UN itself does on just about everything.

Russia is actually too important for the US and NATO when it comes to the Iran issue. Upset Russia further, and they'd develop even stronger ties with Iran and lose their UN vote on the issue.

McCain actually wants Russia written-off the UN security council, so maybe he'd reconsider that move (if elected).

Don't forget the CIA and Israeli support that's been snooping around in Georgia for some time. It's now blowing up in their face. They don't know what to do, and it serves them right.

I hope the loss of life limited, but I really can't see what the US can expect after leaving burning bags of dog poop on Russia's doorstep.

NATO assistance.

"In the event of a military conflict, we will have to reply, also using military force," he said on Friday. "If they choose to rely on NATO, hoping that its troops will fight there, we have enough strength to respond."

Alright let me clarify one thing. The airport bombed in Tbilisi is the Tbilisi International Airport. So far reports were talking of military airports.

SKY NEWS:

Loud explosions rocked Georgia's capital early today and a Tbilisi Interior Ministry official said Russian jets had bombed its international airport. Ministry head Shota Utiashvili also said Moscow was deploying 10,000 in Georgia.

Yeah, that would make sense - don't want any planes coming in with supplies etc.

Look at the difference in the two militaries:

Georgia’s war with Russia is a David and Goliath battle that, military experts say, the Black Sea state has no chance of winning.

The Georgians are outnumbered and outgunned in every department. Russia has about 697,000 troops, while Georgia has only 19,500 full-time regulars.

And with Russia’s 1,200 combat aircraft confronting Georgia’s seven outmoded support planes, and 6,000 tanks against 100 ageing machines, there is no contest.

Matthew Clements, Eurasia editor for Jane’s Defence journal, said last night: ‘The Georgian military cannot withstand a full Russian assault.

'The Russians have total air superiority and their coordinated operation gives the Georgians no chance of resisting.’

Russian sources report that the strike was not against the international airport but against a military airport near Tbilisi. The two are in very close proximity and could be mistaken for each other.

I can only hope that Russia follows suit and returns to the pre-conflict status quo. I know that Georgia has greatly angered Russia and that the loss of life is not insignificant, but there is an opportunity here for both sides to withdraw and start negotiating. I don't care who started it or who is at fault. I just want it to end before it can escalate further.

Actually Georgia pulled out of Tskhinvalli. Their troops still control large parts in the east of the republic. Plus they are constantly counterattacking and trying to force their way into the capital. The most recent counterattack has occured less than an hour ago.

And right now the Russians do not have enough firepower on the ground to follow the Georgians, if that is even part of their strategy. Remember - Russia still has only about 150 armored vehicles (not all of which are tanks) in and around Tskhinvali. Georgian artillery and armored forces still outnumber the Russians there considerably.

S. Ossetian sources indicate that Russians are digging and, and taking defensive positions. They took the key areas around the city, and all they need to do now is hold out untill Russia pulls in more troops to secure the republic.

This is what BBC has to say about the Georgian pull-out:

Our correspondent says that the reported withdrawal to positions held on 6 August appears to indicate that hostilities are taking place across the border between Georgia and South Ossetia.

Russia won't. It's objective is to overthrow the democracy on it's border.

They aren't amassing all those troops and continuing assaults if they intend to pull out of there too.

This looks like the 'classic' wait for reinforcements to arrive. The Russians are strengthening their defenses while waiting for tank and other armour reenforcements to arrive. They plan on taking the whole of South Ossetia if not the rest of Georgia.

My hope is that Russia is positioning those forces as a contingency so that they will be close to the front should they deem an invasion necessary, rather than an invasion already being the plan. An outright invasion by Russian ground forces into Georgia, in my opinion, would cause significant strain in their relationship with EU states and the U.S. and would result in an even greater loss of life. I'm hoping the withdrawal of Georgian forces will result in an opportunity for negotiation and a cease fire before too long. Then again, they may see this is what's good for the goose is good for the ganger. Georgia attacked Ossetia, which Russia considers largely Russian (which appears to be true culturally if nothing else,) so they may assess that an invasion of Georgia would be the best means of making their point and securing leverage before negotiating a cease fire.
