I stand by my words. Russia will not invade. It will however continue to destroy Georgia's offensive capabilities through air strikes.

I sincerely doubt either Russia, the United States, or any of Georgia and Russia's neighbors in the region really want to see NATO or the U.S. enter the conflict. I sincerely doubt that we will see that happen. Because of that, I sincerely doubt Russia will mount an outright invasion of Georgia. If they do, then I will be truly dumbfounded. (Though it wouldn't be the first time.) It just wouldn't make sense and wouldn't benefit Russia in the long run in my opinion.

If the U.S. and its allies get involved at all, it would be my hope that they would do so through diplomacy. Power is a strange thing. It can be wielded in a multitude of ways. The U.S. and its allies have the power to influence this conflict in a way that can diffuse it, rather than inflate it. That's the kind of U.S. involvement I hope to see, if any. Unfortunately, our diplomatic and political leverage with Russia is a bit thin these days.

Maybe I still have just a little bit too much faith left in humanity, but I can't allow myself to believe that a) Russia would risk its relationship with the west in the long term by occupying Georgia, or that b) Georgia will refuse to surrender and keep fighting until they are obliterated. I just don't want to believe either of those scenarios. I pray I am not proved wrong.

Thanks for those links chip - nice collection.

Maloy, strarting to look like you're wrong. Russia seems to be preparing to invade Georgia, something you said wouldn't happen.

With all the stuff that's happened over the weekend regarding the situation it's quite hard to suggest something may not or may happen. I mean many people KNEW that Georgia never shot down 2 planes... how absurd... lol

From now on let's not "guess" what the next move on either sides part will be as it makes one of us look stupid.

CHIPS::

You've been a credit to this thread good sir!!

The people here are worried this conflict could come closer to the capital, considering the gradual increase of Russian forces around Georgian borders

It does look like Russia is getting ready to mount an offensive into Georgian territory.

Speculation does not help make this conflict less misleading and confusing than it already it. Wait untill tomorrow and see what happens.

It's not really speculation just looking at details to make an educated conclusion. We know Russia hasn't invaded (yet).

The signs do point to it though.

We also thought the same thing when Russia went into Afghanistan - "Oh they'll stop". Nope, Russia just kept barraging.

I think that instead of coming up with "nothing" during their meeting, NATO has told various nations to look out for Georgia. Maybe if Russian warships go on the move then members of NATO should move to the area "just incase" it gets ugly...uglier

I dunno, as I said before we cannot speculate what is going to happen as there has already been so many twists and turns

You mean when Soviet Union went into Afghanistan.

There are many more reasons for Russia not to attack further than there are reasons to attack. Russia knows them better than anyone else. Russia pledged that this will be a mission to restore the ceasefire, and that is what it is.

I am the farthest from a communist. I love America just as much as you, the only difference is that you are stuck in time, thirty years ago. The point is to avoid a war not start one.

Russia is an ally of the USA. So is Georgia. So USA will not put troops in Georgia because it will cause the violence to increase.

Maybe I am wrong, but what benefit will come from the destruction of both USA and Russia? We both would be nuked to hell, no Russian property to sell.

"A Georgian ceasefire offer went unheeded by Moscow and separatists in the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali reported that Georgian forces, dug in on high ground outside the town, were continuing to fire on the town." - Reuters

So much for Russia looking for a ceasefire. Come to think of it, didn't they offer one already, then ten minutes later on Sky News it said "Georgia offers ceasefire". I really want to know what the heck is going on over there.
