The russian secretary has just accused Georgia of executing wounded russian soldiers and airmen.

this has gone straight to hell. The 76 VDV will tear them apart.

I have a general question for everyone. Why do you think Putin is at the front lines ie North Ossetia? Is it that he wants to direct the war, or is it that he simply wants to coordinate refugee aid as he stated?

This has already been announced quite a while ago (well, depends on your view of ''quite a while'' considering this hasn't been going on for that long).

It was announced together with Georgia's supposed killing of injured people in general (soldiers *and* civilians)

Watching Russia Today again for new updates... will be posting new post.

Maybe both.He is also showing a great act of strength by going so close to the front line.I don t know many other Leaders that would do this so early in a war.

I don't know if this was already asked, I hadn't the time to read the whole thread, but does anyone know if there is anything, both from Russia and from Georgia, related to August 7?

I ask this because it was on this day last year the Georgia accused Russia of dropping a bomb on its territory.

Is this an important date for any reason or just a coincidence?

Georgia announced a cease-fire between them & Ossetia on the 7th, which was broken a few hours later.

Don't know about anything related to Russia & the 7th.

Little list about old and new news from Russia Today.

Note how they changed the "WAR" thing in their breaking news line to "GENOCIDE".

Russia Today:
Old news:
Hospitals Destroyed by Georgians.
Russia willing to fund 400 million dollars to restore South Ossetia
Death toll 2000+
Georgian special forces nading basements to kill hiding civilians.
30.000 Refugees trying to flee conflict zone to North Ossetia.
Belgian media reports emergency meeting of EU.
Putin arrived in North Ossetia. (First reported ''to aid'')
Yet again: Journalists and various people stuck in the city, some wounded by Georgians.
Part of the 76th Airborne Division arrived in Ossetia, other parts travel by ground transport.
UN Security Council gathered to discuss the conflict, no agreements made.
Russia claims that if their proposal was accepted the current situation could have been avoided.
Russian volunteers aiding South Ossetia to give support in the fight against Georgia.

Abkhaz troops moved into Gali region near Georgian border, trying to drive out Georgians from Kodori gorge.

New news:
Putin arrived in North Ossetia to discuss help for the refugees. Claiming that Georgia's actions are a crime against it's own people.

UN Security Council gathered (yet again) to discuss the conflict in South Ossetia, no agreements yet. But there is intense discussions going on. Talks behind closed doors later.

More demonstrations going on.

The Georgian Navy consists of 20 boats. The most powerful combat units are two missile boats: the Tbilisi and the Dioskuria. The rest are chiefly patrol boats of various sizes, although there is one larger patrol ship, the Aeti, formerly the German minesweeper М-1085 Minden.
The only problem for the Russians are the Exocets in Dioskuria.

I have heard nothing about a bomb in Georgia. Here is the break down of what is known:

In the night from August 6th to August 7th one Georgian armored carrier has been taken out in South Ossetia and several soldiers were killed.

Georgia conducts light shelling of Ossetian military positions on the same night.

Meanwhile a planted bomb blows up on a beach in Sochi in Russia, about 80 miles from the conflict zone. 2 Civilians are dead, but the bomb going off at a different time could have killed many more. Some tie this terrorist attack to the events in S. Ossetia.

On the 7th Georgian and Ossetian snipers trade fire. Georgian peacekeepers in South Ossetia also open sniper fire on Russian peacekeeping positions. Several deaths are reported by Georgia and S. Ossetia.

Refugees, mostly children continue to leave Tskhinvalli in large numbers.

Georgie meanwhile is pulling heavy armored troops towards the border. Lots of movement by military in Gori. Mortars and artillery installations are being set up.

On the night of the 7th Georgia commences heavy artillery bombardment of the entire city of Tskhinvalli.

That is what is known for the day preceeding the war.

This whole situation is akin to a mosquito buzzing around an enormous Rhinoceros.

First Georgia shoots down Russian planes.
Then they open fire on civilians in Tskhinvali indiscriminately.
Then they parade Russian dead on live TV like war trophies and now they're firing on injured soldiers?

I think Georgia's going to be lucky to get out of this mess as one intact, state after Russia drops the hammer here.

Russia seems to be holding back for the sake of appearances, so as not to fall into the bait Georgia has set here by trying to portray the Russians as some big, power-hungry force looking to descend upon poor, little, innocent Georgia and reestablish their old Communist sphere of influence.

I think Saakashvili needs his head checked first and foremost and then he needs to take his own medicine.
This is absolutely unacceptable. Georgia has committed war crimes here.
Their blinding the world's perception of events by feeding the international media absolute bullsh*t and pretending they're completely innocent and then they go and openly attack civilians.

People need to wake up here; all I keep hearing in the media is escalating, simmering, boiling, and so forth. Escalating?
They've declared war on Russia and are targeting civilians here, it's as real as it gets.
While the West is still trying to find Ossetia on a map and demanding Russia stand down.

I wonder what the US would do if two of it's jets went down in Iran or something and a captured US pilot was presented dead to the international media?

Absolutely unacceptable, the hypocrisy with which everyone is accusing Russia with.
Ossetia is one nation. Not two. ONE.

North & South have been united in history for centuries and are inhabited by the same people and who share the same culture. They were united under Russian rule, and only after 1991 did they fall into Georgian hands.

Georgia needs to wake up and realise they can't resort to such drastic measures to keep an iron fisted hold of territories that don't want their authority.
To some extent I applaud Russia for actually going in and settling this mess out.

Now Georgia can feel what it's like to try and desperately wrestle control of a state that doesn't want to be part of you.

Yes Poti has been devastated. No news of any Naval confict, infact the mobilization of the Black Sea Fleet is a breaking news, so we may not hear about any naval attack before tomorrow. Unlike land warfare there is not reporters in the sea. So it may take time.

What was you saying about Syria not having S300???

www.cbc.ca...

This is just some of the proof that Syria had and still does have S300.

Now read this, i hope this explains why S300 is junk.

www.jpost.com...

lol, from your own article ,

and jpost is israeli propaganda outlet

from your janes source:

Syria is understood to have signed a contract with Russia, with an estimated value of USD730 million, for the supply of the Pantsyr-S1E. While Tehran has indicated to Damascus the urgency of the requirement, the source said that the 10 systems to be transferred will not be taken from the first ones supplied to Syria but from later deliveries. The source added Iran has also disclosed plans to acquire at least 50 Pantsyr-S1E systems and is currently now exploring potential options to realise this. He additionally confirmed that Iran has now acquired at least two longer-range S-300PMU-1/2 Favorit (SA-10c/d ‘Grumble’) air-defence systems.

Syrian consent to enable Iran to procure the Pantsyr-S1E systems through Syria is an implementation of the military and technological co-operation mechanism stipulated in a strategic accord signed by both countries in November 2005.
eldib.wordpress.com...

states nothing about Syria having S-300 in 2007 , when Syria attacked the supposed 'nuclear facility'
your third source is a article from march 3 ,2008,which claims that Syria acquired S-300 recently , from the russians in excahnge for military base in Tartus:

Syria's new acquisitions include Russia's S-300 surface-to-air missile defense shield, which is similar to the U.S.-funded, Israeli engineered Arrow anti-missile system currently deployed in Israel. The S-300 system is being run not by Syria but by Russian naval technicians who work from Syria's ports, security officials said.
yalibnan.com...

also, your other BS israeli paranoia source from 2007, which states that syrians are interested in acquiring S-300, again israeli att

According to the memo, the Syrians are interested in purchasing long-range S-300 air defense systems and S-11 and SA-17 medium-range mobile air defense systems. The S-300, one of the most advanced missiles used by the Syrian army can accurately intercept aircrafts from a distance of several tens of kilometers, thanks to an improved radar system combined with special sensors on the missile itsel
www.ynetnews.com...

and yes finally, Russia confirmed in march 2008 that it has approved sale of s-300

WND Exclusive FROM WND'S JERUSALEM BUREAU
Iran helps Syria improve missiles
Upgraded Zelzal can target Israel's international airport
Posted: February 08, 2008

By Aaron Klein
© 2008 WorldNetDaily

JERUSALEM – Iran recently aided Syria in improving a missile capable of better targeting Israeli installations, including military bases and the country's international airport, according to Israeli intelligence briefings this week provided to top Knesset members.

The lawmakers were also told Syria has greatly accelerated its acquisition of missiles and arms, including anti-tank, anti-aircraft and ballistic targeting missiles.

The briefing follows a WND exclusive report yesterday quoting Israeli and Jordanian defense sources stating Syria, aided by Russia and Iran, in recent months has been furiously acquiring rockets and missiles, including projectiles capable of hitting the entire state of Israel. The officials listed anti-tank, anti-aircraft and ballistic missiles as some of the arms procured by Syria.

Knesset members were told Iran worked with Syria to improve the Iranian Zelzal missile, which has a range of about 155 miles and is considered one of the most accurate projectiles in Syria's arsenal.

Defense officials speaking to WND said Russian engineers were involved in the Zelzal improvement process.

(Story continues below)

The move comes amid reports of Syria's stepped-up pace of acquiring arms.

A Jordanian security official said one of the main reasons Damascus did not retaliate after Israel carried out its Sept. 6 air strike inside Syria allegedly targeting a nascent nuclear facility was because Syria's rocket infrastructure was not yet complete.

The official said that after the Israeli air strike, Syria picked up the pace of acquiring rockets and missiles, largely from Russia with Iranian backing, with the goal of completing its missile and rocket arsenal by the end of the year. The Jordanian official said Syria is aiming to possess the capacity to fire more than 100 rockets into Israel per hour for a sustained period of time.

"The Syrians have three main goals: to maximize their anti-tank, anti-aircraft and ballistic missile and rocket capabilities," explained the Jordanian official.

According to Israeli and Jordanian officials, Syria recently quietly struck a deal with Russia that allows Moscow to station submarines and war boats off Syrian ports. In exchange, Russia is supplying Syria with weaponry at lower costs, with some of the missiles and rockets being financed by Iran.

"The Iranians opened an extended credit line with Russia for Syria with the purpose of arming Syria," said one Jordanian security official.

"Russia's involvement and strategic positioning is almost like a return to its Cold War stance," the official said.

Both the Israeli and Jordanian officials told WND large quantities of Syrian rockets and missiles are being stockpiled at Latakia, Syria's main port on the Mediterranean Sea, as well as at Syria's Tartus port, another major port area south of Latakia and north of Damascus.

Syria's new acquisitions include Russia's S-300 surface-to-air missile defense shield, which is similar to the U.S.-funded, Israeli engineered Arrow anti-missile system currently deployed in Israel. The S-300 system is being run not by Syria but by Russian naval technicians who work from Syria's ports, security officials said.
www.wnd.com...

apparently Russia sold the S-300 after Israel airstrike on syrain facility

this is from stratfor:

3 Oct 2007 ... Syria is desperate for the S-300 system, and rumors of its delivery have ... Ultimately, the neglect that Syrian air defense acquisition
www.stratfor.com/analysis/israel_syria_upgrades_and_unchanged_air_defense_dynamic

apparently Syria did not have S-300 , when Israeli attack on facility in 2007 took place , and syria finally acquired S-300 in 2008

and thereby Israel's ranting against Russia

Well Pentagon is spoon feeding him, and has been since he came to power. If anyone can give him his medicine it's the U.S. Russia alternatively can give him some medice in the form of guided munitions. That should cure him of his ills.

The scumbag has been known to be mentally unbalanced and hotheaded back when Shevarnadze was still in power. That is why Saakashvilli was booted out of Shevarnadze's administration. Saakashvilli is not a politician - he would be much better as a street thug or a soccer fanatic.

Oh the bull# is equally being fed by Bush and his lapdogs (read Sarkozy and Yuschenko). Bush blames Russia immideately, the lapdogs start barking, Europe joins in - and now you got an entire misinformed continent howling at the moon. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

A dedicated bunch here on ATS including me have been watching South Ossetia for 5 years now. We have noted the increasing violance back in July. CNN and Fox woke up only when Russian troops intervened.

And most Americans still wonder if Atlanta is being bombed.
