Merkel to criticize Russia's actions according to source in meeting with Russian President Medvedev.

"In the talks, the chancellor will express unambiguous criticism of the Russians' actions and will criticise the response to the Georgian actions in South Ossetia as disproportionate," the source said.

Germany is Russia's biggest trading partner and Moscow generally pays close attention to Berlin's views, regarding it as one of its more reliable European partners.

The Kremlin gave a milder reading of the talks.

"The sides intend to review, once again, the situation and prospects for its settlement on the basis of six agreed principles," a Kremlin source told Reuters.

The Russian MoD says that Serbia is one of the countries that helped Georgia militarily prior to the Ossetian conflict.

If the allegations are true, this is VERY VERY interesting.

Serbia? The ally of Russia? Stabbing them in the back? Interesting. The only way this happened is corruption... or after Russia did ``nothing`` to stop Kosovo independance, Serbia wanted a little revenge... or third hypothesis, Serbia just sold Georgia weapons because they wanted to make money.

So revenge, greediness, corruption or a coincidence. Very interesting.

Wait, because Poland wants DEFENSE missiles it pushes Russia to the brink of war? Could you elaborate on that?

It's not really ``defense``. It's offensive/defensive. The Russians fear that a missile shield would stop their second strike capabilities in case of a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Russia by NATO. With the doctrine and the boldness of the neo-cons, the Russians take every precautions...after all people on power trips sometimes do some things REALLY REALLY stupid...like attacking Russia and thinking you can win a nuclear war.

If Russia loses Germany and Italy as a kind of allies, the situation will deteriorate REALLY FAST.

The Bush speech is really funny.

That is another strange thing about this situation, it looks like some things are in the hands of amateurs.

This is the most true statement in the thread thus far as it pertains to the danger of this conflict. It looks like a large number of "Irregulars" are becoming indistinguishable from the offical military of each side. These militia lack the discipline of professional soldiers. The allow their grudges rather than orders to direct the combat.

They are a very volatile and unpredictable element in a region where representatives (and militaries) of other Countries are starting to arrive.

Russia: Poland risks attack because of US missiles

Ah Jeeze.... The Russians are pissed now. What were the US and Poland thinking, announcing this during the height of this conflict?

Seems like they want to push the Russians right to the brink of a nuclear war.

Russia will NOT i repeat will NOT attack polland .. That is.. Unless they want total war with nato.. I do not think putin is that stupid.

And a comment about that second video where the reporters in the car were getting shot at.. Damn that was intense and they were lucky as hell only 1 guy was barely wounded.. Damn lucky

"The Russians fear that a missile shield would stop their second strike capabilities in case of a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Russia by NATO."

Something that just would never happen... The US would NEVER do a Nuclear first trike on russia and the idea it self is silly..

Did George Bush actually say anything new there? That could have been a re-broadcast of his last speech on the matter. We heard this speech already, when it had no effect.

Where is the American anti-war crowd here? I want to hear, "Putin Lied- People Died!" I want human shields! I want sheehan camped out at Putins summer retreat! I want to hear, "NO WAR FOR OIL!"

Unless they aren't anti-war after all. Maybe I've been right the entire time in my belief that they are only anti-American...

You think so? Would you have tought that they would lie to invade Iraq? Or do 9/11? Or hundreds of others crimes they've committed?

The russians take no chances. To avoid war, you need a good deterrent and NATO is trying to neutralize it... I wonder why... and the Russians too.

Ukranian Presidential Secretariat gives answer to Moscow

The statements of the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov concerning the issues of the Russian Black Sea Fleet temporary stay in Ukraine look unfriendly and obviously show a blatant disrespect to Ukraine, the press-service of the Ukrainian Presidential Secretariat informs referring to the statement of Secretariat’s foreign policy department chief Ihor Dolhov. “Orders of the President of Ukraine must not be subject to interpreting or commenting by official representatives of the other side”, he stressed.

I would love to have heard that sort of subtlety in a Presidential speech and assumed it was overt negotiation rather than a simple error on the speaker's part.

BBC Reporter in Georgia describes Russian military pressence in Poti port:

We saw a column of Russian military vehicles move into Georgia's main port of Poti and seal off the entrance to the military part of the complex.

Troop transporters, armoured personnel carriers and military speedboats are now lined up inside.

Russian helicopters, including a gunship, also flew to the Black Sea port, with one of the aircraft landing briefly.

The Russians stopped us filming and refused to say what they were doing or how long they would stay. This is at least the third time the Russian army has moved into the port.

But we know from what we've seen that they're destroying Georgian military hardware.
