More on the seizure of U.S. made weapons

MOSCOW, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Russia said on Friday its forces had seized U.S.-made weapons from a Georgian military base near the town of Senaki, but added there had been no gunfire in Georgia in the past 24 hours.

"Our forces have seized 1,728 arms in Senaki," Colonel-General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of Russia's General Staff, told a news conference.

Nogovitsyn expressed fresh doubts about the nature of U.S. cargo being dispatched to Georgia. "We would like to know whether there is a humanitarian or some other kind of military cargo, but we don't have this information."

Georgian villagers flee amid claims of atrocities by armed militias arriving from South Ossetia

Earlier this week, Nugzari Jashavili was walking across fields to his house in the Georgian village of Tkviavi. Some 50 metres away, he spotted gunmen approaching his neighbour Gela Chikladze.

"They grabbed him round the shoulder and slit his throat," Jashavili said. "There were five of them. They had arrived from South Ossetia in a jeep. They were going across the village from house to house."

The future belongs to Russia and China

China. The 2008 Beijing Games this week joined the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and the 1980 Moscow Olympics. These four Olympiads were overshadowed by Russian attacks on neighboring countries that Moscow deemed overly independent. The timing of the attacks on Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan and Georgia was not coincidental: In the United States, Olympic years are also election years. And when Uncle Sam is heading for the ballot box, he is weak, and cannot prevent a Russian bear from devouring. For the fourth time in half a century, the Russian bear emerged from Olympic hibernation and feasted to his heart's content.

Video: Georgian TV reporter shot by Russian sniper during live broadcast carries on with her report

This is the dramatic moment a TV reporter was shot by a sniper as she reported live from war-torn Georgia.

Tamara Urushadze took a bullet to her left arm in the flashpoint town of Gori as Russian forces continued their illegal occupation.

Bravely, or foolishly, the 32-year-old brunette continued her report after a few moments as other journalists and aid workers dashed for cover.

I think that if he's trying to suggest that these arms were part of a humantarian aid supply, it would be bull....

Senaki airbase was and has been occupied by Russian forces before those aid supplies arrived.

I see that propaganda from ``western medias`` is in high gear.

Haaretz and of course NY Post...

How is it that hard to understand that Georgia started it all and before that NATO with their missile shield and pre-emptive strike doctrine?

Senaki airbase was and has been occupied by Russian forces before those aid supplies arrived.

Are you sure about that? They were IN senaki, but were they in the Senaki airbase?

The men at the tent camp said the Russians had mined the whole of Gori. They didn’t know whether they would dare to return there even if they could. “I am afraid for my children. Even now I don’t know whether this distress will leave a permanent mark on their health. Even a small noise makes them panic,” Nodar Asatiani from Gori said.

That seems like BS. Mined the whole of Gori? Come on.

Mujirishvili also confirmed that when Russian and Kazakh soldiers could not make out whether Georgians they saw were soldiers or civilians, they ordered them to take off their clothes and checked their shoulders. If they were red, they shot them or beat them to death.

And could someone explain me that?

No singing in the shelters

But while Georgian singers, actors and other prominent public figures thought they were supporting the people who have lost homes or relatives by organizing this action, people fleeing from the bombed regions said “the Georgian people held concerts while we endured this disaster.”

Saakashvili: Russia controls a third of Georgia

GORI, Georgia (AP) - Georgia's president said Thursday that a column of Russian tanks and other vehicles was moving toward the country's second-largest city, and that Russian forces already control a third of Georgian territory.

Mikhail Saakashvili, speaking to foreign reporters in the capital in an appeal for international help, said the convoy was about halfway between the western cities of Senaki and Kutaisi.

"We have no idea what they're doing," Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze said of the Russian column. "One explanation could be they are trying to rattle the civilian population."

Here's a little something I was thinking about: Are the Russians trying to remain in Georgia 'by proxy'? If/when they start to draw back, they could leave their South Ossestian militia allies in there - later claiming that they have 'no direct control over them' (they were seen entering and patrolling with them).

It could also be somewhat circular, too; if the 'irregulars' continue to loot and cause general havoc, that would be a cogent excuse for Russian forces to remain in the area.

Yup, I'm certain of it. Senaki airbase has been in Russian hands for atleast 4 days now. Also see a post I made earlier in this thread about the reporter from Al Jazeera stating that the Russians are digging in and setting up camp at the airbase. She stated that it looks like they're going to stay a while. That was monday night, well before the aid shipments started.

Georgia: Russian Cluster Bombs Kill Civilians
www.hrw.org...

Stop Using Weapon Banned by 107 Nations

(Tbilisi, August 15, 2008) – Human Rights Watch researchers have uncovered evidence that Russian aircraft dropped cluster bombs in populated areas in Georgia, killing at least 11 civilians and injuring dozens, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch called upon Russia to immediately stop using cluster bombs, weapons so dangerous to civilians that more than 100 nations have agreed to ban their use.

Cluster bombs are indiscriminate killers that most nations have agreed to outlaw. Russia’s use of this weapon is not only deadly to civilians, but also an insult to international efforts to avoid a global humanitarian disaster of the kind caused by landmines.

Why Not Ossetian Independence?
AFSis and a few others, I imagine, are wondering why the Republic of Georgia would fight to keep a recalcitrant little spit of land? Even to the point of taking on a much bigger adversary to keep it. It is a good question. Another good question is why would Russia want it? In fact, by recognizing South Ossetia as joined to North Ossetia, a Russian territory, it brings that territory into Russia proper and gives them a territory where they can "legally" station thousands of more troops than they currently have under a "peace keeping" agreement. What good are those troops?

Thanks for posting this, I thought that was what I heard on TV yesterday.

If 'Saakashvili's signature to the six-point peace deal would "consolidate" the halt to fighting' does that mean that he hasn't signed it yet?

If that is the case then only the Russians signed the deal?

Although it is good to post news from many sources, most of what you are posting has already been posted and discussed, most are old news, like this one.

I think that posting those old news at this time may bring some confusion to people that have not been following this situation.

Ukraine ups ante in threat to block fleet

UKRAINE threatened to blockade the Russian Black Sea Fleet yesterday in an act of solidarity with Georgia that risked escalating the conflict.

After flying to Tbilisi to assure Georgians of his country's support, the pro-Western President Viktor Yushchenko signed an order imposing restrictions on the Russian fleet, which is based in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol.
