Breaking:

Russian convoy moves deeper inside Georgia - witness

NATSRETI, Georgia, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Ten Russian armoured personnel carriers (APC) shadowed by three combat helicopters advanced 10 kilometres (7 miles) further inside Georgia proper from the town of Gori on Friday, a Reuters witness said.

With soldiers perched on top of the vehicles, the convoy moved along the main highway in the direction of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, before pulling over near the village of Natsreti.

Russian troops are securing the outskirts of Gori, 25 kilometres (15 miles) south of South Ossetia, having pushed Georgian forces from the breakaway territory this week following days of heavy fighting.

Georgia has been trying to negotiate their withdrawal from Gori and the return of Georgian police to the area.

Russia may strike nuclear blow on Poland in case it deploys US Patriot missiles

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia warns Poland that it may become a priority target for Russia in the event the USA deploys elements of its missile defense system on the territory of this East European nation. To put it in a nutshell, Russia may strike a nuclear blow on Poland, which is possible after the recent change of the Russian Federation defense doctrine.

So, what on earth is going on?

The U.S. has again demanded that Russia get out of Georgia, and yet it would appear that they're moving even deeper into the territory.

The reason why I posted it, is so that we can see the story from 2 sides.
I think it's biased to only report from 1 side of a story, knowing that there is an other side aswell.

It's understandable, they're touring all the military bases in Georgia to gather intel of what's there. They're like kids in a candystore because at this stage noone is going to stop them.

I think that western military would have done the same if they were in Russia's position.

Merkel criticises Russian military action in Georgia

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has used a press conference with Russian President Dimitry Medvedev to criticise Moscow over its handling of the conflict in the Georgian break-away region of South Ossetia. Following their talks in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Merkel said some of Russia's actions in Georgia had been excessive and that the presence of Russian soldiers in the country was not a good idea. She called for Russian troops to be withdrawn from Georgia proper and for a six-point peace plan to be implemented without delay. The chancellor added that Georgia's territorial integrity must be the point of departure for any long-term plan on bringing peace to the region. Medvedev said that it was highly unlikely that South Ossetia or another break-away region, Abkhazia, would ever be integrated back into Georgia again.

Russia: Poland risks attack because of US missiles

From AP. And you can have 3 others sources in the left of the page. And if you followed the whole NATO-Russia subject for the last 4-5 years, they said it more than one time.

I suspect that the statements regarding Poland re: the U.S. missile system are meant as a statement of doctrine and not as a threat in connection to the current crisis. I think they mean that if a war with the U.S. were to break out, then Poland would be considered a legitimate target, because it will host weapons systems that Russia regards as a national security threat. I don't think they're saying that if Poland hosts the missiles, Russia will attack them now. Don't get me wrong - any talk of an attack against anyone by anyone is still not a good thing in my opinion, but I don't think they're threatening imminent action or anything. I think it's a statement regarding scenarios that would only occur in an actual war with the United States or NATO. I can't be certain of course, and I remain open to other possibilities.

True, Ace, but I sort of look at it like this: actions are usually stronger than words. We know the Russians don't want Georgia to join NATO - and now they occupy the country and continue to destroy it's military capabilities. They've now also said that Poland is in danger of being attacked, too.

Unfortunately, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Mr. Bush, Enough!!

So you have the colossal audacity, Mr. Bush, to “warn” Russia to pull back? As the wanton, perverse war criminal under whose watch the world saw the crime known as “shock and awe” committed, I’d say you were well out of your mind to suggest that Russia should pull back.

Please note: This is just one person's view and this view does not represent the view of a nation, or my own view. Nor am I posting this as "flamebait", but with the way things are going now, I think it's only good to hear all sides of this conflict, in order to base an opinion for ourselfs.

President Bush’s Statement on Georgia

We’re working closely with our partners in Europe and other members of the G-7 to bring a resolution to this crisis. The United States and our allies stand with the people of Georgia and their democratically elected government.
