said it appeared that the South Ossetians were the provokers of the violence.

You're kidding me?

Who the hell started the bombing? Georgia. They started massing troops after the US-Georgia training finished. They surely had the ``go for it`` approval from Rice because otherwise it would stop their NATO candidacy in December... so if they had the backup from the US, they would be able to do that without repercutions otherwise they just would have to wait 3 months to have full membership.

United States: After the GMT 4:00 8 August UN Security Council meeting, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried, however, said it appeared that the South Ossetians were the provokers of the violence. Fried said, "We have urged the Russians to urge their South Ossetian friends to pull back and show greater restraint. And we believe that the Russians ... are trying to do just that." White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said on 8 August, "All sides should bring an immediate end to the violence and engage in direct talks to resolve this matter peacefully." Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice later stated: "We call on Russia to cease attacks on Georgia by aircraft and missiles, respect Georgia's territorial integrity, and withdraw its ground combat forces from Georgian soil."

Don't they email each other?

It would seem that they would want to be consistent.

Maybe this is a perfect time to attack IRAN? A double-whammy opportunity.

And by perfect I mean asinine.

All I got to say is that Rice should be publicly humiliated for her statement/s (when hasnt she said something inaccurate?). Am I talking to myself?

Look at it this way -- unless the West gets involved in a major way, Georgian forces will have an exciting but short life.

Well, South Ossetia has just accused Georgia of genocide because of the shelling and (apparently) Georgian president intends to declare martial law in the entire country according to Georgia's military secretary and has announced a full mobilisation of every reservist...

There also now appears to be protests in both North Ossetia and Moscow. (in support of south Ossetia that is, not in support of Georgia.)

Also the Russian NATO representative says he has been assured that NATO itself will not get involved.

So... fun and games all around then. (I.e. Georgia is doomed.)

And Russia today streamed on-line in case you can't see it... Russia Today

I think thats when the real problems will start! If the west do get involved. But I dont think that'll happen. I think our government would rather stay on neutral terms with Russia.

When I think of Russia I always think of Hitler and the Nazi's the way they control people.

Perhaps Georgia were using propaganda, notice how no new information has come out since Georgian web sites ere hacked? Or maybe Russia has suppressed them... ooooo I sense my conspiracy side tingling.

GORI, Georgia — Russian troops entered a breakaway region of Georgia on Friday after Georgian forces pushed into the capital of the pro-Russian enclave, in a sharp escalation of the longstanding conflict.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin declared that “war has started” and President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia accused Russia of a “well-planned invasion," saying he had mobilized Georgia’s military reserves.

I fully expect total war by the morning.

When the 58th get there the Geogians will have no chance. Their only chance is to get some birds up into the air and begin CAP's if they have not already done so!

I was watching th olympics and Putin had a smile on hi sface whenever the camera looked at him, now we know why.

Just watched analaysts on the news breaking this down. Saying this will not escalate unless Russia tries to take the capital of Georgia and thats it. Saying the US and Europe will NOT get involved in this and that they fully expect this to be down in several days when Russian goals are achieved. Saying no one is going to interfere so this is just going to play out on its own between Russia and Georgia and we know how that will end.

There ya go. Thread can be locked now. No WW3 im sorry. Let the weekend begin!

some people have no clue at all as o what the US involvement in this is - i can see russia using nukes when this goes out of control to send a message to the USA.

Georgia is too close to the Russian homeland to use nukes; the fallout would spread all across their southern regions, killing and sickening thousands of their civilians.

A gas or bio-agent attack would be more effective; it doesn't drift nearly as far as nuclear fallout.

Although I think it will stay conventional, tanks and airplanes. But this is so close to the region .. Iran is right there, Northern Iraq and Turkey are right there, this could become explosive.

For example, Kurdish fighters could take the opportunity to hit Turkey and Turkey to hit N. Iraq again, Iran could assist Russia with their military agreement and attack Georgia; this would cause the USA to hit Iran.

Keep your pistol holstered Ahmadinejad!

UPDATE: Holy crap, CNN just said 1,400 people ALREADY DEAD.
