Just so everyone knows, there is, just like the other two times Georgia said Russia had attacked Gori, no independent confirmation.

See here:

Security council head Alexander Lomaia said that the tanks entered Gori about 9:45 a.m., about eight hours after Georgia accepted a cease-fire previously agreed to by Russia to end a conflict that broke out last week.

Independent confirmation of Lomaia's claim was not immediately possible.

(emphasis added by me)
hosted.ap.org...

Again, I'm not saying it isn't true. We need to be objective, though.

No they are not attacking reporters. They are robbing them. Attacking reporters is a grave war crime. They are simply robbing them. Guess they aren't really highly paid.

Are you absolutely certain? If this is true, it is extremely serious, as you no doubt know. It would mean that Russia stole equipment from journalists while breaking an internationally sanctioned cease-fire and invading another country for the second time in as many days. International outrage would be enormous, regardless of the context in which it occured.

I see nothing online or anywhere else about this. Are you certain reporters on the ground weren't just confirming a report by someone else? Because earlier in the thread there was a report that CNN had "confirmed on the ground" a day or two ago that Gori had been captured, but it turned out to simply be a case of them having spoken to Georgian officials who made the claim (which turned out later to be incorrect.)

Is that possible again in this instance, or are you 100% certain?

Two Sky News TV reporters have just confirmed it - on the ground in the centre of Gori.

- Russian tanks ARE in Gori.

- The reporters have just personally witnessed Russian soldiers 'robbing' a group of Norwegian journalists.

Live on Sky TV - they were just on the phone to the studio. They said there is 'no sign of peace.'

Saying at the russian press conference about the equipment they captured , and 'we know where they came from' and are studying them for their strengths and weaknesses .

edit:

I see your talking about some journalist equipment, and the above line might be seen/ misinterpreted to mean I'm talking about the same thing. I'm not . They wouldn't want to examine that kind of stuff for strengths and weaknesses heh. No , Military equipment captured in battle .

If this is true then it will be all over the web soon and well documented. This is a horrible escalation if true. No, I am not villifying Russia or saying for certain that they weren't reacting to a perceived threat from Georgia of some kind (we don't have anywhere near enough information to say that yet.) Regardless though, if Russia is in Gori after a cease-fire, then this conflict may have just become a far more grave matter for the world.
And I'm an extremely optimistic person by nature, so bear that in mind when you see me say that.

ABC news has absolutely nothing about the tanks atm. But i take it this is going on Right now.

I hope .. That Bush doesn't do anything seriusly stupid. I don't see the french doing anything if all that has been said is true. At least not doing anything militarily.

I wonder just how far Putin is willing to go with this.. And just how far Bush is willing to go.

Damn i hope this is not true

Unfortunately, it absolutely is. I actually couldn't believe what I was hearing as those two reporters spoke live on the phone from the centre of the city. They also said that people are fleeing from the surrounding villages. I'm as staggered by this as you are. This has been 100% confirmed by the reporters.

Staggered.

Is this the age we live in now, where we not only have to be suspicious of news sources, but in which they are so utterly co-opted by various agendas that they all say totally different things?

A witness in Gori, 25 km (15 miles) south of the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali, told Reuters he could not see any Russian tanks.

www.alertnet.org...

How do we know who to believe? No matter how this turns out to be going, the media has utterly failed the world in this conflict in my opinion.

I don't think that they are invading.

Firstly are the Russians mad? They just signed a peace deal and now this?

Secondly is it possible that the Georgians attacked Russian positions again in S.O, and the Russians are retaliating?

Have the Russians said anything?
