And that's certainly a problem with this conflict, reports from all sides are contradicting each other.

At the moment, Russia states to have ceased fire. Yet Georgia claims it's civilians are being fired upon?

Russia isn't there to kill civilians, and the Georgian president going on TV telling his people the Russians are shooting civilians just seems like a blatant attempt at propaganda and an attempt to get more people to take up arms.

Something tells me the Georgian president isn't going to hold to his side of the agreement... I really hope Sarkozy is a good negotiator.

Yeah, I noticed that.

What is with the Georgian government not being able to contact their own military to tell them about the ceasefire.

Something tells me the ceasefire message was intentionally not relayed to the troops. But I don't know who would benefit from such a thing.

Absolutely bogus.

This is coming from Fox news, and the first point made is trying to make Russia look like Nazi Germany...
... the points they have delivered as fact are all the points we have discovered as rumors.

This is disgusting.
But then again, it's expected, after all, it's not like Fox has ever been an actual news source in this century.

Outside of this... I pose a question.
Here in Canada, if a province or territory demands separation, we are required to hold a referendum in that province to allow the provinces citizens to vote on whether or not the province separates.
(Lucky for us, so far nobody has.)

My question is, I was under the assumption democratic countries were bound to these rules... why has Georgia denied Abkhazia and South Ossetia their right to a referendum to separate?

I've been trying to get it through a few media outlets, I can't find one that's translated either.

lol, why is it that every website that hosts CBC is still re-running Harpers trip to France which occurred over 4 years ago?

U.S., allies consider expelling Russia from G8 as punishment for war

WASHINGTON — Scrambling to find ways to punish Russia for its invasion of pro-western Georgia, the United States and its allies are considering expelling Moscow from an exclusive club of powerful countries and cancelling an upcoming joint NATO-Russia military exercise, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

But with little leverage in the face of an emboldened Moscow, Washington and its friends have been forced to face the uncomfortable reality that their options are limited to mainly symbolic measures, such as boycotting Russian-hosted meetings and events, that may have little or no long-term impact on Russia's behaviour, the officials said.

Russia-Georgia War: Peace plan welcomed.

www.skynews.com

*snip*

The Russian and French presidents have endorsed a peace plan that would see Russian and Georgian troops withdraw to their pre-war positions.

*snip*

Boy, don't I feel better. Looks like this thing *is* winding down.

This video analysis put forward by rixhell is quite revealing, in that it shows the kind of advice that the US government may be receiving:

It's good to hear the humanitarian issue being aired as an immediate priority. Unfortunately NATO involvement (especially the no-fly zone advocated by this analyst) would be seen as extremely provocative by Russia, and the best way to guarantee an even worse humanitarian disaster would be to escalate the conflict.

I would have thought serious diplomatic efforts are far from exhausted. Agreement on a humanitarian effort should surely now take precedence.

That's what people said on friday, saying, "By next week, this will be totally forgotten and resolved." Well, it's already Tuesday and its not over yet. No one as far as I'm concerned should be saying what the duration of this will be, unless they have a crystal ball
No one knows.

This is will be over in a few days as I said.
South Osetia will want it's independence, part of the russian army will remain in South Osetia, the rest of things will go to normal as it was.
I'm happy for this and sad.Happy that this pupet or the georgian president as other people call him got what he deserved. On the other side I'm sad for the Georgian people.

Difference is, the Russian management team is well, Russian. Saakashvili was planted in Georgia by the US.

Chief among these NGOs is the Liberty Institute, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development’s Eurasia Foundation as well as financier George Soros’s Open Society Institute. The Liberty Institute’s 31-year-old co-founder, Giga Bokeria, took a Soros Foundation-funded tour last February of Serbia to learn how the Otpor, or “Resistance,” student opposition had ousted Milosevic following a disputed election in the autumn of 2000.

In the summer of this year, Otpor activists visited Georgia, running courses that trained 1,000 students from all over the country in the tactics of Serbian-style “revolution.” The result was the student group “Kmara,” which only months later would provide the manpower for Saakashvili’s successful putsch of November 22-23.

Johnsky, here is the real problem.

The Russian "peacekeepers" allowed S.O. to attack georgia and georgian people for two straight days. No complaints. No attempts to stop them. No call for Russian troops to stop the S.O.'s, NOTHING!!!!!!!!!

The only thing they did was call in the Russian troops when Georgia did what the peacekeepers would not or could not do.

"If they had stuck with that option, placing the Russian 58th between South Ossetian separatists, and the Georgian forces, this could have ended allot better. "
You are correct, "assuming" the Russion military would have done anything more than their peacekeepers. Personally, I seriously doubt it.

Do you actually have any undisputable proof of that. By the way, your own personal opinion based upon your anti U.S. bias do not constitute proof? Lets stick to verifiable facts instead of anti U.S. propaganda!

I have no intent to engage in anti US propaganda. If you are curious, go ahead and read up on the history of "rose revolution" in Georgia (including the link I already posted) and you'll find that the NGOs in Georgia, with the US' financial backing, did the deed. And that's the fact (albeit difficult to digest, to some).

wow! this thread was amazing, thank you to all who are helping!!

Anyone see on Sky News the Georgian President say he won't succumb to a ceasefire?? Standing next to... dun dun duuuuun The Ukraine PM/Pres.

I think we may see a false flag attack on Georgia and there we go again... ding ding round 2.... But if that happened I don't think Russia would stop, what they have done i.e stopping the conflict has given Georgia a chance to survive.
