That's because Russia handed down a decent good beating, obviously restraining itself enough so as not to snap Georgia's matchstick body in two and annex the entire country.

The Georgian people aren't quite sure what just happened; they think Georgia forced Russia out. They are trying to save face, claim some kind of victory out of this, with Saakashvili's rhetoric of "never giving up" and all.

Once it becomes clear to them that Saakashvili did not make good on his promise to return S. Ossetia and Abkhazia to Georgian rule, and launched the country into a war which they lost, we'll see if they'll still be united. You'd be safe to bet Saakashvili's political career is over in Georgia.

What are your thoughts, everyone? I don't think this is anywhere near over. Russia may have ceased military operations, but it still occupies Georgia and Medvedev has shown no intention of withdrawing his troops.

I think this is just the beginning of multiple confrontations with the Russians over the next twelve years.

Do we know Russian forces are still inside Georgia? All I've seen are reports of sporadidc air strikes (which are bad enough of course) and one report of Russian forces heading from Georgia to Abkhazia (which would mean that they're leaving.)

He was trying to stop the separatists' constant attacks against Georgia. Dude, the story did not start when russia sais it did... the story started way earlier.. stop being such a sucker and look into it

Ohh I see, he was trying to stop the separatists by launching over South Osetia's towns and capital rockets with no acuracy that do damage on a wide scale. As a result the capital of S.O was totaly leveled to the ground, alot of civilians died alot ran for their lives crossing the border in to Russia.

So that is how you stop separatists?Let me pull up the BS flag. You are full of it.At that point there was no russian army there, only the peace keepers.

By the way the whole S.O population or most of it is separatist, because none of them want to be part of Georgia, if any of them had doubts it's all clear now after what hapened in S.O.

So who is telling BS? I know it's not me.

Actually, contray to what the Russian spin is, here is the truth.

S.O. had for two days straight been making terrorist attacks, while the "Russian Peacekeepers"
did nothing but watch. When Georgia responded, that was when the peacekeepers went into action-against Georgia-never stopping S.O.

What they got was an extreme over-reaction from Georgia, but clearly is was a "REACTION" to the S.O. terrorist actions.

Then, Russia went into another country and attacked it, and we will see, that Russia will not be done until they instal a "RUSSIAN" puppet government.

MOSCOW - Russia's president has agreed to a proposal calling for both Russian and Georgian troops to move back to their initial positions and stop fighitng. Georgia has not yet agreed to the plan, which also calls for the beginning of international discussion on future status of Georgia's breakaway provinces and ways to ensure their security.

The plan endorsed by Dmitry Medvedev and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy demands that the parties ensure the free access for humanitarian assistance.

After his talks in Moscow, Sarkozy will be heading to the Georgian capital with the proposal.

That is just fine, and S.O will get it's independence.

Not necessarily. Abkhazia is still part of Georgia, at least on paper. And they are "in need" of Russian backup to secure de facto independence.

An earlier contributor pointed out that gaining or tying in with a breakaway Abkhazia would give Russia a major prize: a potential naval base.

On a side note: with all the frenzied confusion, controversy and hectic global media coverage of this conflict, can you imagine what it would be like if the U.S. or Israel attacked Iran?

BREAKING - SKY TV - NATO: It cannot be business as usual with Russia.

Hope we get more on that.

What I mean is that prior to the initiation of hostilities, Abkhazia wasn't considered to be under the control of Georgia, although there were areas held by Georgia or in which Georgia had considerable influence. I'm just trying to ascertain whether Russian forces are still inside Georgia proper itself - not Abkhazia or Ossetia - as another poster indicated.

Air strikes aren't occupation (someone used that word) but are, of course, bad enough on their own.

What I'd really like to know is whether Russia is going to bolster its "peace-keeping" forces in S. Ossetia and Abkhazia with more troops and armor, perhaps down the road using them as staging areas should tensions flare again.

You make it sound so small

You ment to say that there are no towns left no capital in S.O
You also ment to say that thoulsands died and alot more ran over the borders?
I see, I think this is what you wanted to say but I guess you did not know how to put it.

Stoping separatists with catusa style rockets launched over towns full of civilian population.

Then, Russia went into another country and attacked it,

Well see above, can you blame them? If I were Russia I would of done the same.maybe the georgian president can now pull his hand from inside his ass and smell his fingers, it will smell like the decisions he made.If I were Russia I would ivade tibilisi and then I would go to the presidential palace or what everthe hell he has there and then I would throw his ass in siberia for war crimes. The UN has haga Russia has Siberia. Then I would pull out of Georgia and let the people vote for a new president.

Get my point?
The only man to blame for this is the Georgian president. None of this would of happened. It was his call.Makes me sick when I see him on tv.
He should answer for war crimes in front of a cort of law.

...and as we all know, the only and by far the best way to counter a common terror attack is to use Multiple Launch Rocket system to vaporize a city and its inhabitants! Because that's what these Georgian savages did.

BP shuts down Baku Supsa segment of oil pipeline temporarily as a precaution (this segment carries oil from Azerbaijan to Georgia):

LONDON (AP) - BP PLC says it has shut down an oil pipeline
that runs through Georgia as a precautionary measure, but
says that it's unaware of any Russian bombings on pipelines
in the region.

BP says it closed the 90,000-barrel-a-day Baku-Supsa
pipeline earlier Tuesday.

Another pipeline operated by the London-based oil company
in the former Soviet Republic, the larger
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, is already out of action
after a fire last week on its Turkish stretch.

Updating the Russian demand for a binding non-use of force treaty with Georgia regarding South Ossetia:

MOSCOW, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Russia on Tuesday demanded that Georgia sign a legally-binding document on the non-use of force and said Georgian forces must return to their permanent bases for an international peace plan to work.

"It will require the signing of a legally-binding treaty on the non-use of force," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters. He added that Georgia must relocate its troops back to their permanent bases:

When asked by reporters what would happen if Georgia refused to agree to a six-point peace plan endorsed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Lavrov said: "We will be forced to take other measures to prevent any repetition of the situation that emerged because of the outrageous Georgian aggression."

www.alertnet.org...

It's my hope that there isn't some sort of short time table on that demand.

No, I did not mean that.

Because that is how YOU feel, it is not how I feel and It is not the facts of the matter.

FACT: O.S. Committed terrorist actions for 2 straight day-while Russian troops stood bye and did nothing.
FACT: After 2 days of attacks with Russia doing nothing to stop it, Georgia took matters into their own hands, as they had to.
FACT: O.S. brought this on themselves by their attack's
FACT: The "RESPONCE" to the O.S. terrorism was over blown-granted
Fact: Russian's are actually to be blamed-let me explain why.
If the Russian so called peace keepers had done something, anything to stop the S.O. from doing their Terrorist attacks, this probably would not have occured, and there would have been no need for the Georgian responce.

Some people don't like to let the facts disturb their points of view, I however, do.
