The latest BBC headline is that "fighting worsens"...

I have to agree tho, I think this will trail off quite quickly. Georgia knows it will have to leave with its tail tucked between its legs. The only danger I can see is if they try and bait Russia into invading Georgia-proper in order to seriously escalate the situation. I think Russia has more sense than that.

I think you make a good point but remember now, that is ancient history. (figuratively speaking)
Georgia has attacked Russian military personnel. The gloves are off.

To the Russians, the Caucasus is just one, big cesspool of nationalistic extremism waiting to boil over and take off more chunks of Russia with it.
Moscow isn't going to allow another Chechnya to take place here.

Regardless of whether or not the Ossetians support Russia's actions, Georgia is actively trying to undermine the integrity of a Russian republic.
They can't afford to look incompetent after Chechnya, especially such a popular man like Putin.

The Georgians just handed their ass to Russia on a silver platter...

Hey people.

I fell asleep before after staying up since this thing broke around 5am GMT. So let's face facts, there is basically no way back from here now. Both sides have lost numerous soldiers, propaganda is running riot i.e ethnic cleansing, shooting down of 5 planes etc. Now I don't know if what they are saying is true, but something is damn sure fishy.

I heard on BBC News channel before that Georgia wanted a ceasefire, if they did why would they pull out 1000 troops from Iraq so quick?? I don't think this thing will be over within a few days, it's going to get alot worse before it gets any better... a damn lot worse.

I think it might be time to remove the dust over "When the *$/% hits the fan.doc" and get prepared for the worse.

Just got back to work from lunch and tried to find this on CNN, FOX, and MSNBC, all I could find was coverage of John Edwards' stray baby. Is this still going on or have things settled down?

I read that one earlier, I haven't seen anything new for a few hours. It would be nice get some fresh news instead of all of us sitting here stewing wonder what is going on and speculating.

Damn, and I figured that since it was big news in the US and a possible war didn't merit airtime, that things had come to a standstill and the top generals over there were playing SceneIt to decide the winner.

I totally agree with you that Georgians made a huuge mistake , and Russia will ensure that NATO and Georgia will not be used in the same sentence for long time.
As for ancient history - i think that we are running in a spiral, so to speak. There a different times, different conditions, technologies and a lot of stuff. But our basic attitude is the same. Principles of human society and politics - which are nothing more then management and coexistence of different societies - are the same. So to disregard history is to close eyes on a lot of things that will happen. I hope there was some sense in that.

Thanks. A technical comment -- you don't need tinyURL -- just use the URL tag with a symbolic name as the ahnchor, you can have as long a URL as you want.

As Georgia is a break away state from Russia(or the USSR) you would think they would be more sympathetic with South Ossetia wanting to break away from them.(Not saying they are liking it.)
After all are Georgia not now democratic.
Unless Georgia's buttons are beening pushed else where(can't think were!)
This is getting worring and I hope peace brakes out before it gets any bigger.
