So if for example lets say there are a big majority of american citizen living in a region in mexico , then the mexican government attacks them and begins ethnic cleansing is it ok for the US to intervene or not?

[edit on 8-8-2008 by TheOracle]

There has been, to this point, NO definitive evidence of ethnic cleansing. Actually, most of the reports we are getting right now are skewed or wrong or propoganda or whatever.
The fog of war has descended on the region. We will not REALLY know what the heck is going on there for a day or so (my guess).
We are jumping the gun by screaming ethnic cleansing or WWIII.

Obs out

and yt people take georgian o american propaganda as facts.

For the most part I have been labelled a "neo-con" in other posts, I guess because I work for the US "military industrial complex", but something bothers me with this whole Geogia thing and the rhetoric of some of my patriotic brethren making posts here.

Why is it so important that we (the USA) put up missile defense batteries in the Czech Republic and Poland (they could realistically go in Greece, Turkey, etc) and piss off Russia?

Why is it important to effectively surround Russia with US & NATO bases?

Why is it so important to support Georgian aggression on a breakaway republic when Georgia itself is a breakaway republic?

And while we (the USA) is doing all that, we are bitching and whining because the Russians want to arm Venezuela and put bombers in Cuba?

Can't we let the Russians police their backyard (former soviet republics) and we (the USA) police our backyard, (central, south america and the carribean).
Seems like a viable solution, why must we meddle in affairs that we have no business meddling in, and then bitch and complain when Russia reciprocates?

I'm no Obama supporter, but crap like this is enough to make me become one.

TBILISI (Reuters) - Georgia will withdraw 1,000 soldiers from Iraq to help fight off Russian forces in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, the head of Georgia's Security Council, Kakha Lomaia, said on Friday.

"We have already communicated to our American friends that we are going to withdraw half our contingent of soldiers in Iraq within days because we are under Russian aggression," Lomaia told Reuters. "These are some of our best soldiers," he said.

So it looks like they are going to bring reinforcements. I wonder if the US is going to give them a ride?

What a sensible post, bios. Indeed, I think the US policy could have been wiser. But enmity towards Russia runs deep in US politics after years of Cold War, to some pathological extent.

As I am far from omniscient I would not be able to comment as to why people take "Georgian or American Propoganda as facts". I could not tell you why people take Russian propaganda as facts either. All I'm saying is that with the fog of war covering this area we really don't know what is going at the moment.

Yes, I do. I watch the available Russian video feeds and most of the city is under Russian control. The Georgian forces who controlled it earlier were apparently spec ops. There is still mortar fire coming from the Georgian side.

For those who have TVUPlayer, there is one Russian channel in English language that is transmitting news about the situation in South Ossetia.

For those who do not have TVUPlayer and do not know what it is, it's a player to see TV on the computer, it has many channels available and if a free download from here.

The USA has taken the piss re Russia for a decade and more, surrounding it with bases and NATO affiliates/members. Good on the Russians for defending their own people from what can only be labelled as a US World Colonial Policy. I'm so pro West re Iran not going nuke but pushing the Bear into a corner is a big mistake.

no freaking way, this is BAD! it's bad enough that a country's capital city has been destroyed, but Russia are gonna be p*ssed at losing 2 warplanes, and it's not good to get Russia p*ssed.

that said, they can't really complain about their planes getting shot down if they were the aggressors. what do they expect to be able to fly around bombing things and have no one allowed to touch them?

if this escalates further and more countries get involved, it will ruin the olympics. this is meant to be a time for world peace and unity.
