its odd how in articles on all the sites they all clearly say how russia is defending those people since the majority have russian citizenship so there protecting there own so to speak. when listening to any of the news video clips cnn, fox news they leave that out and put out how georgia has been good to the US in past years (whatever that means) the news clips are realy one sided in labeling russia wrong which sounds completely contrary to all the articles ive seen.

This will all be over very shortly. Russias military is vastly superior to Georgias. Next week this will be old news.

Maybe, But Georgia is VERY PO'ed at russia. At the least a thousand more will die before this is over. If the US doesn't get involved.

I have read through 13 pages so far and in between all the posts giving the latest news I see a fair few members taking shots at each other due to the fact of supporting different sides, living in different countries and without doubt different religious beliefs.

Well all I can say is it is PATHETIC !!!

When we are all tucked up in our own burnt to a crisp beds and our families, relatives and friends have all gone the same way then just think on this.

You sabre rattled for your team and those leaders you supported are probably still going to be alive in their bunkers with their nearest and dearest.

Yay for the military might of our countries, they showed what they could do and killed us all...................well except the meglomaniacs.

This won't alarm me until Russian tanks or troops venture into Georgia proper. The escalation of force is a bit unsettling, but this has been brewing for a long time. Russia has been conducting over flights for some time. They even shot down a Georgian UAV over the area months back.
It looks like Russia secured the Roki Tunnel already, so they aren't planning on leaving South Ossetia any time soon. And there is no easy way to move them.
This will simmer and both sides will bicker. Russia will win and send an important message to its friends and foes alike about their sphere of influence. The West will gripe but nothing will become of it.
If Russia actually proceeds into Georgia proper, however, all bets are off. The other former republics will see this and won't stand for it-- they've been down this road before. I don't think the West will let that stand either. Essentially the annexation of Ossetia by Russia would be this generations version of the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina by Austria-Hungry in 1908.

I don't think that this will escalate, it's a local war and neither side wants to let it get too big.

If this was started by Georgia, it was a bad step to take, like the one Israel did two years ago, it will only make them look bad to the eyes of the world.

If this was started by Russia it will give strength to Georgia's position with NATO and other "western" countries, but I don't think it will affect much Russia's position in the world, and if it does then Putin can come to the rescue and make friends again with the "west", Medvedev will be considered the responsible.

But I may be completely wrong, international politics it's not my strong point.

I hope your right. It sounds like the fighting has tapered off but they could be just hunkering down for reinforcements.

Nah this is going to fizzle out. The EU is already mediating. Those who are "wishing" for WW3, sorry you're not going to get it here. Better run back over to the threads about iran.

The situation is not that simple. Russia issued mass-citizenship to all people who live in this autonomic/self-proclaimed area several years ago. If they want it or not. A lot , majority, do not want to be in Georgia - and this is their respected position. But the general issue sounds very similar to Sudetenland problem. Germany gave Germans in that region of Czechoslovakia mass-citizenship , then used it to claim that its citizens are being oppressed and annexed this territory from Czechoslovakia. Then of course annexed the rest of the country. There are differences - Czechoslovakia did not attack Sudetenland, but Sudetenland were not "autonomy" and did not proclaim independance. And Georgia, very silly - in my opinion, attacked South Osetia thus allowing Russia to respond and annex this area with good excuses. But citizenship issue is just that - a prelude to later excuse for annex. Just like Germany before WW2 and just like Russia now.
BTW, i see no parallels between Nazi Germany and current Russia. Just between similar bloody political tricks. And Georgians are very much at fault for falling into the trap and taking a lot of innocent people with them.

I was right now reading a article from my country about the war , and from what they say , a ethnic cleansing is taking place , and Saakashvili said that Georgia is just defending themselves.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian peacekeepers are waging a "fierce" battle with Georgian forces in South Ossetia and have suffered 12 dead and 150 wounded, the peacekeeping forces were quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

"Now our peacekeepers are waging a fierce battle with regular forces from the Georgian army in the southern region of Tskhinvali," a representative of the Russian force was quoted as saying by Interfax.

There were no details on the casualty figures.

(Reporting by Conor Sweeney)

It does not look like its fizzling out. 12 peacekeepers dead is not a good thing. Its a small indication of them not wanting peace.

This is from earlier today...in the recent 9last few hours) it has been tapering off a bit.
