the reports of ethnic cleansing are from reporters in teh field , so somewhat valid - especially since reuters are running with it

Do you have links of these reports? The only claims I have heard/read are from officials in South Ossetia, and not of the reporters who have seen it with their own eyes. Thanks in advance

So much for 8 being a lucky number. YOu have a new war, 14 people dying in a Dallas bush crash, a train wreck in the Czech Republic, threat of terrorism in China, etc., etc., etc.,

Now, for you military history buffs out there, what do you think. Do you think the War in South Ossetia will showcase a new Russian military? Or will we see the same beleaguered force featured in the two Chechen wars?

Fox News just reported 1400 deaths now reported in this conflict. Its going to get worse before it gets better which is usually the case.

1400? Is that just today? Or over the last few years?

wow, Georgia claims that managed to hit down 5 russian aeroplanes.. I wonder if this is propaganda ? Anyway, I am now concerned that Bush would find this as a great moment to attack Iran as Russia is "busy" with Georgia..

Quazga,

I watched like a dosen clips of Russian news channels today, the 1400 is the number of Ossetians killed in one day. That's what happens when somebody uses Multiple Launch Rockets on a population center.

If true, then to an armchair general such as myself, that raises questions regarding the true competency of Russia's pilots. Georgia does not appear to have that well-armed or well-developed air defense system and the data suggests training would be rather suspect as well. Yet the mighty Russian Air Force has lost five planes already?

It will be interesting to see if Russia has improved its warfighting skills from its days in Chechnya.

Well there we go!

Why don't we spread the good word of WW3!

Every country is eligible to join! Free admission!

Seriously, this is terrible, and more over, imminent...

Well, atleast the russians aren't lazy.

They could just withdraw all troops and drop a nuke.

But I dont see this getting too big. A few thousand more killed then some peace agreement.

Maybe 1400 is not so false.

news.yahoo.com...

Hundreds of civilians were reported dead in the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won defacto independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992. Witnesses said the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was devastated.

"I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," said Lyudmila Ostayeva, 50, who had fled with her family to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia. "It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged."

They may not know the exact count since its too soon, but its just based on their visual assessment. It looks like 1400, but it may be in the hundreds, or you could say its many.

And so you know, the Russians don't have the accuracy of their bombs like we do, so we should give an understanding for the Russians for blowing up everything. So its not a warcrime. Its collateral damage.

You play with fire long enough and you will get burnt....

Georgia will realise soon enough. No one apart from the Georgians has been able to verify their claims about Russian planes violating their airspace or attacking civilians.

I honestly think it's outright bull# here. Same with the 5 planes downed figure. Yeah maybe in 5 years or so...
What are they going to down them with old ZSU's and Russian SAM's from the 1960's?
I think Russia above all else knows the weaknesses of their S-2-A systems.

The Georgians opened fire on the Russians first, they panicked, they looked for the most dramatic excuse to justify their actions i.e. death of civilians and tried to get the media to spin it their way.

Russia has every right to protect the integrity of it's Republics and to stop them being absorbed by more foreign separatists.
Russia doesn't want another Chechnya here.

I think the Bear has been awoken....

my tiny midwest town is 33,000 people, we are talking about a football game packed well not really packed with people, like Fargo ND and another podunk ND town fighting each other...

In perspective this conflict is not very massive nor is it world destroying.

The Georgian airforce is small its armor limited in numbers, take out the hardware, including wheeled guns and call it a day.

The Russians should put some armor around the city to aid recovery and then put harsh economic retribution requests against Georgia.

For your information the capital city of the region is pro russian, they didnt attack it the georgians did. Russians allegedly attacked a military base not civilian installations. And they dispose of smart laser sat guided bombs too.

This will all be over very shortly. Russias military is vastly superior to Georgias. Next week this will be old news.
