China leads the world in developing, testing and deploying hypersonic weapons, beating out Russia while the US, having already spent $12 billion, has yet to field even one. The weapons can travel five times the speed of sound, making interception by existing defensive systems difficult at best.

Little correction...the warheads were inert and while they did carry a good bit of kinetic energy the factory is not dust and in fact in the footage I have seen it doesn't appear that there was a huge amount of damage.

The function of nuclear weapons at all times was deterrence. It still has the same role today. For 3 years after World War II, the United States had a monopoly on the use of nuclear weapons. Then they lost this function. And peace was preserved for 60 years only because of nuclear parity. Now Western crazy leaders suddenly decided that "Putin will be scared." He will not be scared!
