Finland, Sweden set to join NATO as soon as summer - The Times

(Reuters) - Russia has made a "massive strategic blunder" as Finland and Sweden look poised to join NATO as early as the summer, The Times reported on Monday, citing officials.

The United States officials said that NATO membership for both Nordic countries was "a topic of conversation and multiple sessions" during talks between the alliance's foreign ministers last week attended by Sweden and Finland, report added.

General Who Ran Syria Operation to Lead Russia Troops in Ukraine - aka The butcher of Syria

Russia has appointed a new commander for its operations in Ukraine as it refocuses its war effort in the east, having failed to secure territory around the capital, Kyiv.

General Alexander Dvornikov, commander of the Southern Military District, will now lead Russian troops on the ground, according to Western security officials and diplomats with knowledge of the change. The Kremlin has not announced the appointment.

Dvornikov, 60, has held several senior positions in the Russian military, including army commander of the Far Eastern Military District. He notably oversaw Moscow’s forces in Syria in 2015 and 2016, where they fought alongside Syrian government troops in a conflict where President Bashar al-Assad was accused of using chemical weapons against his own people.

The last update I saw on the Syrians is they were in Russia receiving training before they go to Ukraine. Apparently Russia likes Syrian soldiers more than Russian soldiers. To my knowledge they are not in Ukraine yet.

Hey Xcathdra, I specifically check this thread for your posts first, news bits & such second. However, maybe down by your disclaimers, could you drop a link to wherever you're pulling updates from so update lurkers like me can outright bypass the circlejerks that bubble up?

Frankly, I'm just interested in the updates & news, and would rather skip the middle school girl clique drama entirely when it crops up. Not worth even weeding through.

No problem.. The op to this thread has links to the resources I pull info from. Both control maps have icons displayed representing war updates. The 1st control map has links to where the info comes from - feed on right. The second control map, when you select an icon, on your left is a link to the news source.

The above link is used by F2d5thCavv2 / PG4 for their updates in the thread.

The 2 control maps focus on "on the ground" updates and are generally military related. I will say that Russia does not seem to put out daily updates but every once in a while the Russian MoD does put info out. 4That info is usually included on both maps and the 1st map generally makes it a point to notify the user that the info is from the Russian MoD as well as if the info is reliable or propaganda.

As far as news articles go, when I browse around and find something interesting and relevant I post them. The news articles are linked. I use youtube for analysis on the overall military situation (I linked one of those videos a few posts back).

I will say as a reminder that finding a neutral source is almost impossible. I urge anyone reading the updates to do their own due diligence on researching the info in question.

It is up to the individual on whether or not they trust the source / info presented.

Well, it sort of leaves it ALL on France. But why?

First, because it was mainly the French and Germans pushing the notion of an EU Army separate from NATO. But if the Germans don't build much of a force ...

... and as France is the only EU member with nuclear weapons, without an American and British nuclear shield, that leaves the rest of the EU (including Germany) vulnerable to Russian nuclear blackmail ... as it is unlikely that France would try to confront Russia on a nuclear arms basis one-on-one.

EU Army as an idea was a bastard child of the EU's wish to run a foreign policy in any way they want to. EU foreign policy has already been conducted without reference to its potential effects on NATO, but with a military force solely dedicated to the EU, the Union's foreign policy was set to become even more loose cannon that it already was.

Ukraine has learned a brutal lesson that EU "support" has distinct limits, especially where Russian feelz are concerned. If anything, the Russian invasion has strengthened support for NATO and even has traditional non-members seriously considering applying to join the alliance.

They are being trained on air defense systems, manpads etc.. Syrian MIG-29 pilots are receiving training as well.

More than 20% of Russian soldiers confirmed dead during the war in Ukraine are officers, including 10 colonels, 20 lieutenant colonels, 31 majors and 155 junior officers, the BBC reports.

The BBC has been able to verify the identities of the 1,083 Russian servicemen killed in Ukraine, their deaths reported by local officials or Russian media.

The BBC World correspondent Olga Ivshina said evidence showed:

Russia has lost some of its best specialists, including elite spec. forces operators, highly skilled fighter pilots and some experienced commanders.

In addition, about 15% of all confirmed Russian losses in Ukraine are paratroopers from units “which are considered elite of the Russian army”, she said.

Russia warns Sweden and Finland against Nato bid

Russia has warned Finland and Sweden against joining Nato, arguing the move would not bring stability to Europe.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that "the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation".

It comes as US defence officials said Moscow's invasion of Ukraine has been a "massive strategic blunder" which will likely bring Nato enlargement.

US officials expect the Nordic neighbours to bid for membership of the alliance, potentially as early as June.

Washington is believed to support the move which would see the Western alliance grow to 32 members. US State Department officials said last week that discussions had taken place between Nato leaders and foreign ministers from Helsinki and Stockholm.

Finnish MPs are expected to receive a security report from intelligence officials this week, and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government "will end the discussion before midsummer" on whether to make a membership application.

Finland shares a 1,340km (830 miles) long border with Russia and has been rattled by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But Moscow has been clear that it opposes any potential enlargement of the alliance. Mr Peskov warned the bloc "is not that kind of alliance which ensures peace and stability, and its further expansion will not bring additional security to the European continent".

Last week Mr Peskov said that Russia would have to "rebalance the situation" with its own measures were Sweden and Finland to join Nato.

And in February Maria Zakharova, Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman, warned of "military and political consequences" if the countries joined the bloc.

Gee, I can't for the life of me figure out why countries want to join NATO. If Russia wants peace and security then the Russian people need to give Putin a choice - either resign by choice or be removed by force.
