9 July update

Key Takeaways

* Russian forces continued to launch unsuccessful assaults northwest of Slovyansk and conducted offensive operations east of Siversk from the Lysychansk area.

* Russian forces continued localized attacks northwest of Kharkiv City, likely in an effort to defend Russian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) in the area.

* Russian forces continue to face personnel and equipment shortages, relying on old armored personnel carriers and launching new recruitment campaigns.

* Russian forces continued to set conditions for the annexation of Donbas, Kharkiv Oblast, and southern Ukraine.

"Germany braces for ‘nightmare’ of Russia turning off gas for good" www.theguardian.com...

"Germany is bracing itself for a potentially permanent halt to the flow of Russian gas from Monday when maintenance work begins on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that brings the fuel to Europe’s largest economy via the Baltic Sea.

The work on the 759-mile (1,220km) pipeline is an annual event and requires the gas taps to be closed for 10 to 14 days. But never before in the pipeline’s decade-long history has Germany seriously been asking whether the flow will begin again.

Robert Habeck, Germany’s economy minister, has not shied away from addressing the government’s concerns. On Saturday, he spoke of the “nightmare scenario” that could occur."

Key Takeaways

* Russian forces are conducting a theater-wide operational pause in Ukraine and engaging in operations to set conditions for future offensives.

* Russian forces are likely intensifying artillery and missile strikes west of Bakhmut in order to isolate the city from critical ground lines of communication (GLOCs).

* Russian military leadership continues to form ad hoc volunteer units and private military company combat organizations partly comprised of older men and criminals to support operations in Ukraine.

I would not wish any harm on the Germans, but they are now reaping the reward for their pursuit of national self-interest and appeasement of Russia over many years. Dealing with dung-hill regimes always ends in being covered in dung. What more can I say?

In reality, Putin has sealed Russia's economic stagnation and reversal for a generation to come.

The Germans people are experiencing a form of payback for having too little curiosity about why their political system couldn't seem to find anyone else besides Merkel to rule the country for 16 years.

The pursuit of self interest was an act of the power wonks in Berlin, and the usual hogwash message for public consumption of "you are such hard workers" and "the rest of Europe takes advantage of you" set well with much of the German public. Even as Merkel killed their atomic power plants and forcefully maneuvered to make Germany dependent on gas supplies from Putin's regime.

Fault also lies with the rest of the EU, the UK, USA, and Canada. The policies of the German state have been for years at odds with the interests of the EU and NATO, but national leaders were so corrupt that practically no one, except Trump, publicly criticized Germany. We'll all reap the reward for the failures of our leadership in one way or another in the years to come, I fear.

Kazakhstan is distancing itself from Putin's alliance system (CSTO).

They've withdrawn from a system of mutual financial support within the CIS, and have now informed Belarus they will no longer cooperate with Minsk on military matters because of the Belarusian state's support of Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Is president Tokayev now a marked man?

100% spot on
and with all those Sudeteners, woops sorry............................. Ethnic Russians, living in Kazachstan, especially on the border in the north, Putin can just turn up the heat and things can be sorted.

My Kazach friend from Ukraine told me Kazachstan is behind the scenes part of Putin's empire just like Belarus is. He reckoned as long is the Russian space agency and all the military security that goes with it exists is in Kazachstan then control for Putin is guaranteed.

Well that's spot on regarding the Germans. One minute they are told by the scientists worldwide to close down their coal mines, next Fukoshima and they were told to close down their nukes. You start saying to yourself as a German............... "What's left? Just the gas."

In some ways the German had no choice. They don't have the resourses to power their admittedly fantastic industrial machine. Gas is the only way. Sure the German should have looked farther afield for supply.

Now it looks like Germany is going to switch over to Israeli and Egyptian gas. Yet that's one heck of a change once you set up with someone else already.

My bet long term is Germany will switch back to Russian supplies. I genuinely think Russia will force their hand and prevent a Middle East supply whatever it takes.

HIMARS is way overrated. HIMARS is 227 mm diameter, unguided range 35 km guided range 70 km. By comparison, Smerch / Tornado-S is 300 mm diameter, unguided range 70 km guided range 120 km. When used correctly, Smerch / Tornado-S easily hunts down HIMARS. What Russians need are more drones to locate HIMARS.

Interesting drone hunting kit used by Russians. These guns look conventional rather than super futuristic like a lot of western designs are.

For it being over rated it has destroyed upwards of 20 Russian ammo/supply depots.

HIMARS have precision accuracy and Russia can't figure out how to shoot them down. Yep, most definitely "overrated". I hear that Russia is getting hundreds of drones from Iran for the purpose of trying to find and destroy the HIMARS systems. Russia must think the HIMARS are overrated too, huh?

This is one of the GPS guided rockets that was shot down.

twitter.com...

It doesn't look very different from 9M544 300 mm GLONASS guided rockets used in Smerch / Tornado-S, only smaller in size. For comparison:
