Russia Rapidly Retreating as Ukraine Makes Big Territorial Gains

Russian troops in Ukraine appear to be rapidly retreating from the areas around Kharkiv while Ukrainian armed forces make significant advances north and northwest of the city, as shown by unverified maps tracking Moscow's invasion of the neighboring country.

@War_Mapper, a Twitter account that has been mapping the Russian invasion of Ukraine since February 24 using drone and satellite images of Ukraine, reported on Tuesday that Ukraine launched two offensive near Kharkiv, where Ukrainian troops took the settlements of Slobozhanske, Borshchova, Rus'ki Tyshky and Cherkas'ki north of the city, and Bairak, Rubizhne, Verkhnii, Saltiv and Zamilivka northwest of Kharkiv.

Rubizhne is the big one, probably a very small town, but within easy artillery range of one of russia's few remaining rail lines.

I suspect that we'll be discussing the destruction of that rail line tomorrow.

I also suspect that the two russian BTGs remaining West of Rubizhne will suddenly retreat back to the russian border in the next 24 hours before they are completely surrounded.

So you live in an alternate reality where countries invade and destroy each other over the beliefs of a tiny percent of it's population that are disliked?

Is there any country in your reality that isn't currently at war with at least a dozen other countries?

Is your global life expectancy under 20?

Does everyone live underground there now?

How long do you think your nuclear winter will last?

10 May update

Key Takeaways

* The Ukrainian counteroffensive in northern Kharkiv took further ground and have possibly closed to within 10km of the Russian border.

* Belarusian authorities are escalating rhetoric accusing NATO and the US of threatening Belarusian borders, but Belarus remains unlikely to join the war.

* Russian operations around Izyum remain stalled.

* DNR and Russian forces are advancing efforts to consolidate their control of the ruins of Mariupol, including reportedly attempting to reopen steel plants to produce military equipment.

* Russian forces in eastern Ukraine continued attempts to encircle the Severodonetsk area and reportedly reached the Donetsk-Luhansk administrative border from Popasna.

* Russian and Ukrainian forces did not conduct any significant attacks on the southern axis.

More at URL above.

Commentary:

The 10th of May marked 82 years since the German invasion of France and the Low Countries, the "six weeks that shook the West".

In that campaign, Allied infantry was ill-equipped to stop German armored forces; at best, they had "antitank hand grenades" (suicide weapon) and antitank rifles, referred to today as anti-materiel rifles. Antitank guns, while present, were not available in sufficient numbers to blunt the German advance.

Today, Ukraine's infantry has powerful and accurate antitank weapons that have wreaked havoc on Russian tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.

The fog of war, while still present, is somewhat dispelled by ubiquitous drones -- preventing surprises like hundreds of enemy tanks suddenly appearing in an area that no one expected. This situational awareness, in turn, prevents the enemy from getting inside one's decision making cycle. The Russians move, they are spotted, and their thrust is parried.

Aerial bombardment, while still terrifying and destructive, can be spotted by radar, and in some cases, be prevented by shooting down aircraft and missiles.

Weapons of the offense broke the stalemate of trench warfare in World War One. A century down the road, it may be the case that the defense is again becoming sufficiently powerful to make attacking an unrewarding option.

Cheers

I think Russia needs to actually take the steel plant if they want to use it. So far reports are - Russia has suffered more than 2k casualties and about 5k wounded. They launched more than 30 air missions today to bomb the plant. Ukrainian forces still control the plant.

Seems like it would be months in any case to get that plant into working order. Surely Russia has operating facilities of their own if they want to produce steel for weapons. If their military equipment stores are really that low, they are in very serious trouble.

Cheers

They are in very serious trouble.

They'd been relying on ccp for nearly everything necessary, from steel castings and tires to fasteners, wire & electronics.

It appears ccp isn't interested in jumping off the pariah cliff.

"Lula, 76, said Zelensky should have yielded to Russian opposition to Ukraine's moves to join NATO and held negotiations with Putin to avoid a conflict."

sounds pretty reasonable to me

Putin negotiate?

Yeah but there nothin to negotiate with when dealing with a colonialist NATO which sees as its primary aim to destroy Russia and plant a star apangled US / EU / NATO flag on the Kremlin.

Putin warned the colonialist west about moving into what he sees as Russias near abroad and was met with deaf ears.

All these mafiosa are as bad as each other yet the way certain posters see Zelensky as tastier than cream and Putin as puking as eating hot coals are very very blinded by the reality that both sides in this eatern European special operation are as rotten as tomatoe induced donkey sh*te

Politicians are what they are -- that's not the same as a madman.

This invasion is insane, uncalled for, and unnecessary.

Putin is a madman -- his own government needs to stop him.
