If this actually happened, nobody officially announced it yet. There is just some 'drafted' picture circulating for now. Doesn't mean anything yet.

I suggest trying to forget everything you know about putin and start over.

I couldn't connect any dots at all on the ground until I did that.

I think you're at least partially right about Kharkiv, but simple rage at killing russia's entire 'elite' special forces unit there is responsible for much of what happened last night.

Russians had just left the city after collecting their remains when what turned into near-carpet bombing started.

I think battlefield rage is at least partially responsible.

There is the possibility of Europe doing exactly that and being expressly determined NOT to let that happen again. No matter the cost. And this is where things could get out of hand quickly. Who's to say that France for example, and even the UK could decide to take Putin on themselves to prevent it, no matter what NATO thinks, or the US. The way Macron was talking the other day about nukes, I gotta wonder. The potential for sole European military action on this is also on the table, and while not likely, still a possibility.

Huh, the last French attack on Russia didn't work out too well.

I doubt the UK would do that without being partnered with the USA.

Could be there are still sober minds in the high command of the French military.

Decades ago, when France was "out" of NATO (but not completely), the French military staffs made a practice of regulary reminding liaison personnel from NATO countries that if the Soviets invaded western Europe, the French would be on NATO's side and quick. I don't think they were saying things like that with a wink and nod from Charlie De Gaulle. But, that was a long time ago, and the French soldiers making those comments had fought side by side with American armies during the liberation of France. No idea where the sentiments are today.

I've been very impressed with the discipline and unity displayed so far in efforts to avoid this.

Still a great risk.

But at least a little comforting to know that they appear to be doing things pretty close to the way I would if anyone was ever dumb enough to put me in charge.

I would do some significant things different, but this part of the plan is REALLY close to what I'd recommend for the situation.

Only putin knows if this will be enough (probably not even putin) and nobody knows if NATO can maintain discipline (they aren't really known for this) long enough to keep everyone's nukes parked, but I haven't come up with any better options.
