The reason I asked about the dam is because I've seen it suggested that if that dam were to fail, the entire country would collapse. The Yanghze river basin supplies almost all of China's food. And all the farmland would be flooded out. And the busiest port in the world would be destroyed. Wuhan would be under 10' of water. A city with 10 million people.

I didn't respond to your bit about 3GD because I just don't know what to think about it. Not the design and geological strengths and weaknesses, or the construction defects, or the recent 'news'.

Have studied what I could starting even before construction started, and still couldn't make any better guesses than when I started, except this:

They got incredibly lucky with some unexpected geological features hiding some of the serious design flaws and potentially catastrophic construction defects for now, but no idea when that is no longer enough.

Maybe a day, maybe a century, but that thing will come down prematurely. Someday.



Separate from that, I think you underestimate potential casualties of a 3GD catastrophic failure by a factor of 10-20.

Not kidding.

A disaster beyond description.

It is my opinion that when the Chinese designed the dam, they did not cater for the force involved with huge amounts of in-rushing water.

The force of incoming water has to go somewhere, and it ends up mainly striking the dam's center.

They catered to the static forces involved to hold back that much water very well. But the deluge of rain after rain, all sending the greater than anticipated shock waves through to strike at the center.

Latest reports indicate that they have had historic rain levels of twice normal rainfall.

Indeed.

The total volume of water used in these calculations is off quite a bit due to the huge mass of unexpected clayish silt in the reservoir (part of the reason 3GD is still standing), but that is at least partially made up by the unexpected volume of loose silt in the many riverbeds along the path, so the geographics are pretty accurate but speeds and final depths are a little off.

Something difficult for non Chinese to understand is just how many people live in those flooded areas, and how few 'paths' there are for rapid evacuation.

Too many people, too few 'paths'.

If 3GD fails without warning, especially at night, this would be beyond catastrophic.

Folks how many years have people tried to bring electricity to Africa and the story seemed to be suppression of the same luxuries a peasant in 95% of the rest of the world has? I have never been on board with the concerted effort to not modernizing Africa unless it is "green".

All those nations with Chinese power stations were ripe for the takeover of their nations because the west chose to suppress technology to "save the planet". It is clear they don't want to save humans just the one something that will exist until the very end of time whether we live or die. This rock we are on now. So, I don't think this was ever by accident. Always by design and the long game was China or someone dark would come along and be "kind" to them for a huge price.

Question is, how far away from urban areas does electrification extend?

Big problem with copper telecom cables is that people were stealing the copper wire for resale. Heard that happened with fiber optic as well until people realized there was only glass inside those cables.

Building the infrastructure will require huge shifts in mindsets. Something Klaus and Co. probably rub their hands with glee thinking about.

1) Why is the DAM collapse required?
