Maybe now we should start a pool for bets on how long it stays there before someone steals it! LOL!

I'll go first. I bet it's gone by Monday.

That, or the feds will pull it down before then...right after the first person rolls their Jeep while trying to get to it.

A lingam, sometimes referred to as linga or Shiva linga, is an abstract or aniconic representation of the Hindu deity Shiva in Shaivism. Basically just a pole with water passing it.

I was kinda on that line of thinking and I know the obelisk is right next to Canyonlands National Park. I was looking at their website for hiking trails. There are 18 trails in that park. I was trying to match the trail maps with the google earth photo to see if any went by the area the obelisk is in, but being unfamiliar with the area it is hard to match them up.

Here are the trails and trail maps

Here is one of the maps

Has anyone thought to check for an augmented reality geo tag? One of William Gibsons books, Spook Country referenced "locative art" which is basicaly gps located ar data you can interact with at a place of interest. Example, massive image of River Phoenix at the Viper Room location in LA.

Might be some kind of geo cache/treasure hunt location or an arty statement.

Just found this linked on twitter, close up video of rivets, saw marks, thickness of the sheets etc

www.facebook.com...

Nice!

So it appears to be 8th inch steel riveted together, ground cut with a saw and then it was siliconed in.

Now, who and why?

Well, I'm pretty resigned to the notion that the "why?" is really nothing more than to create a situation exactly like what is going on over the object right now...(i.e. someone finds a strange object in the middle of nowhere, it gets a bunch of media attention, people start talking about it, and social media goes crazy over it).

Maybe just to get some people out in the real world.

Also, does that one guy still think its fake?

Are you referring to me?

I thought it was fake in the beginning. I have since stood corrected.

I did. And I am. And I hold my opinion until proven wrong.

In movies? They walk around, touch, exclaim. Like Star Wars....you don't think the Millennium Falcon is real because they walked around, touched it....

You just presented that as acceptable criteria...or....just like in the movies. Right?

"There was speculation that the monolith was installed by an artist".

Some kind of Mormon fertility area much like Cerne Abbas ? Maybe set up some game cameras and see what it captures.

Ah Ha.... a Buddhist Shrine

makes sense for the effort/resources spent

? wonder if orientation of post and water source was paramount ? the Feng Shuy of a Lingam shrine

I'm saying someone will attempt to steal it on Friday night after "camping out" and downing a few beverages, if they've done a good job securing it in place then by Saturday it will be bent at about 45 degrees.

It's not your typical starving artist. 1/8 stainless prices out at about 530 bucks per 2×6 foot sheet, so about 3 grand just for the metal alone.

I'd guess that cost easily upwards of 5 or six grand when it was all said and done.

Not including any labor, just materials and logistics.

Just a wild ass guess though.

Yep....definitely well funded. I can't imagine what a beast this would have been to transport and build. Each of those side would have weighed around 200lbs each if they are indeed steel.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone tied a strap around it and tried to yank it down and all of a sudden it started emitting this ear splitting high frequency sound which caused everyone's head within a 500 ft. radius to explode!

LOL!!

Not too far off. The weight is 122.5 +/- lbs. per side, assuming a 12' x 2' x 1/8" piece.
