Coronavirus in NSW sees 'dramatic increase' with 171 cases now recorded

Another 37 people in NSW have tested positive to the coronavirus, including six guests at the same wedding, bringing the total number of infections to 171

The Health Minister Brad Hazzard said it was likely there would be an exponential increase in coronavirus cases in the next few weeks.

Mr Hazzard said 67 of NSW's cases were acquired overseas, while 44 cases were transmitted within Australia.

He said it was still unknown how 17 cases contracted the virus.

It comes as the PM revealed shock new predictions that hospitals and GPs could soon be overwhelmed by 300,000 people a day seeking treatment or testing for the coronavirus.

We are not Italy.

Good job buying the media hype.

A few weeks ago, I was in Disneyland, elbow to elbow with lots of folks. Do I have the coronavirus? Nope.

Fourteen days later? Still, nope.

Enjoy your media influenced and dictated nonsense. Bravo.

Please, just stop posting.

Be careful? Absolutely.

Be ridiculous? Nope. Knock that # off.

The "numbers" are ridiculous. I live in California. We have four MILLION inhabitants. There are 355 cases of COVID-19. That's 0.0083 percent of our population.

Do the math.

Stop it.

Deny ignorance, right?

I do not deny anything. The coronavirus is absolutely a thing.

It is not something to fear, though. If you do, you are absolutely falling for the media virus hook, line, and sinker.

The people who saw this coming are the sane ones. Same goes for protecting your family when our gov gives bad, illogical advice re. safer for everyone to send kids to school, what a joke.

I'm pretty isolated here just normally, glad I haven't had to listen to idiots in denial minimalising, except for online...

It's a lot to process, ridicule no doubt is held on to for as long as possible.

Not looking forward to the fallout from this mess.

I don't think this has been posted yet:

"Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Sunday ordered all bars and restaurants in the state to close for two weeks to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus."

Illinois governor orders bars and restaurants to close

"The time for persuasion and public appeals is over,” the governor said. “This is not a joke. No one is immune to this.”

Some people have Normalcy Bias. Textbook to the teeth.

Ok, here another poster already has:

Originally posted these numbers for the US on 3/9.

Calculations for doubling rate is holding about 3 days. I don't think it is because of more testing. We would see a real spike if that were the case.

3/2 about 100 cases
3/5 about 200 cases
3/7 about 400 cases

Projected based on doubling every 3rd day:

3/9 about 800 - Actual just under 800
3/11 or 12 about 1,600 - Actual just over 1,600
3/14 or 15 about 3,200 - Just passed the 3,200 mark looks to hit maybe 3,500 today
3/17 or 18 about 6,400
3/20 or 21 about 12,800
3/23 or 24 about 25,600
3/26 or 27 about 51,200
3/29 or 30 about 102,400

Here is an interesting posting to Beta Sam:

The Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC) is excited to post this pre-announcement for a potential Request for Project Proposals (RPP) focused on the development of prototypes aimed to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19).

*CAUTION: All information contained in this pre-announcement has not been formally approved by the Government, and represents MTEC’s interpretation of the situation at this time. All information is subject to change.

...

* Point-of-care diagnostic that provides rapid and accurate determination on exposure to COVID-19.
* Prophylactic(s)/Therapeutic(s) that can prevent and/or treat in a rapid manner (few hours to 2 days) potentially in a non-hospital environment. Repurposing FDA-approved drugs/biologics for prevention/treatment of COVID-19 or testing of drugs/biologics that have already demonstrated safety in humans for the prevention/treatment of COVID-19 are preferred.
* Disease predictive modeling that provides early warning through data capture from several different streams of data to include social media and artificial intelligence (AI) parameter decision tools that would provide actionable information to medical service providers and command structures.
* Patient monitoring, tracking, and management system for in-home or non-hospital environment patient tele-health services to include interface into the Cerner electronic health record.

Prototype Development to Combat Novel Coronavirus Disease COVID-19

Interesting to note the use of Social media and AI data streams as well as the focus on non-hospital environments in which much of this is to take place.

Absolutely bang on brother (or sister) we all gotta go someday right?

Would you still be singing the same tune if someone close to you was affected?

Because this is real and it has affected a lot of people.

First of all, Calm down
Your Tallying the numbers while this is still in-play
come back and post in 2 months, then pull out the calculator
otherwise, relax take a deep breath (preferably with a mask)
and see how this unfolds with us
I hope your right

And by that I mean it’s not necessarily the mortality rate of it but among other things the effects if unchecked this would have on the medical systems of countries the world over.

I absolutely would, because I honestly believe in modern medicine. Am I concerned about my Dad and my In-Laws? Honestly, no. They are fine. All there of them are above the "age limit" for folks who are susceptible to the virus, and my Father-In-Law meets all the criteria for folks who can contract the virus. But, I believe that the majority of the reporting on it is nonsense, and that the folks I care about are good to go. I will continue to take the media information with a grain of salt.

Just my take.

A mask won't stop the virus.
Thanks for the heads up, though.

I am well aware that it is still all in play. I teach at a school that is closed for the next two weeks. I called bull# on that, too.
