The novel coronavirus can no longer be contained in the United Kingdom, he said, and all that can be done now is to mitigate the worst effects of it to give the doctors and nurses in the country’s already creaking national health service a fighting chance to save as many lives as possible.

But the strict containment measures now familiar around the planet—population lockdowns, prohibition of mass gatherings, and travel bans—were notable only by their absences. Johnson’s government has diverged with the rest of the world and decided to take a much less draconian approach, and his scientific advisers have admitted the strategy could see as much as 60 percent of the population catch the coronavirus.

In point of fact, Britain is effectively encouraging a potentially deadly virus to spread to the majority of the people who live here. Remember, the U.K. is one of the only European countries which is still allowed to send flights to the United States under President Donald Trump’s travel ban. That will change, however, come Monday night when a travel ban on the U.K. and Ireland will kick in, according to a Saturday announcement by Vice President Mike Pence.

The logic goes like this: if a large section of the population is exposed to the coronavirus now, it will likely help people develop a level of immunity, and then Britain will be in the best possible position to defend itself from a much worse outbreak of the virus in the future. The strategy reportedly has been shaped by the history of the deadly Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918, which saw a second, much larger spike in deaths months after the first outbreak.

All schools are closed in all of Italy.
All churches are closed (including St. Peter's Basilica).
All weddings and funerals are postponed.
All restaurants are closed.
In fact, all stores except grocery stores and pharmacies are closed.
People are urged to work from home unless they work in special designated factories


The streets are almost empty.

These steps are not an overreaction. The coronavirus is out of control of in Northern Italy.

Because the demand for respirators and intensive care has been beyond any previous planning, doctors have been forced into the kind of triage thinking developed for intense battlefield casualty situations. There are reports that emergency room doctors are allotting respirators to those with higher life expectancy due to the limited equipment in the hardest hit areas of the province. If you are older or have other illnesses, you may simply not be eligible for treatment.

How can u guys not see that they r playing on ur fears?

We were talking about this the other day with pets. Some pets can get CoV and pass it back and forth. But what is more likely is that they were in close contact with infected people and not really sick so when they were testing positive, people were nuking pet populations for no reason.

The tests isolate and amplify the genetic material they are looking for, it's not a scam and if they are done correctly, they work well. So whether your cold is caused by rhino, corona, parvo, or whatever is unimportant because the test will recognize the differences.

Everyone responds to infection differently, some pick the right viral antigen while others make poor hosts and others even go into sepsis. It's a chest cold, it will spread and act like one, just move more quickly because no one is immune yet.

Agreed. No argument here. I was more addressing their generalizing and the assertion that a "standard" cold will give a false positive on testing, though. Although, on my part, this assumes that they have a test that
is specific for nCov-2019 and won't pick up other members from the sub-family.

We, wife and 12 & 14 kids are lucky we are able to have prepped and lock ourselves safely in. Try do the same, get some Vit C & honey and stock up. Its going to be a rough ride.

I understand what you’re saying but not everyone can afford to stay at home. Not everyones jobs can allow them to do this. What happens to these people? Can we trust that our houses won’t be repossessed, our water and electricity cut off?

I saw, I should've read earlier with that other one lol. My bad I get it now. It's not a conspiracy and evil people going nuts like he was saying. It's mother nature and we got very lucky this time. If this were Avian influenza, say H7N9 that was spreading like this, we would be in major trouble.

People were screaming conspiracy about it being a major killer before it got here. Now that is here, the same people are screaming conspiracy about it being some government or economic thing about nothing.

nyc already passed that no utilities will be cut off for anyone who doesn't pay during this time.

I can tell you that cases are popping up all around here. This is little old midwest country towns.

I think a lot of people who are in the "cold" sayings is in for one hell of a ride. I wonder how long the "over reaction" crowd is gonna hang on.

I'm calm, I've been calm and I can tell you that case numbers are starting to rise and it will explode. We waited too long and now we will have to just sit back and watch it all unfold.

I've had a level head pretty much this whole time with spouts of high anxiety. I think that the time for "it's just a cold" is almost over and those people are gonna disappear from this site like a burned out light bulb.

I believe that my belief of hope it doesn't get too bad is already passed.

Once one of these "it's just a cold" clueless people expose an elderly population we will see ok once again what this virus will do.

Doom porn or not, I can read the signs and I can tell you that I have read a lot of stupid, stupid posts that have come and gone along with aged skepticism that has been proved wrong.

Keep it up "cold team". This virus needs more clueless fools to spread the infection rate.
