LONDON (Reuters) - Losing your sense of smell and taste may be the best way to tell if you have COVID-19, according to a study of data collected via a symptom tracker app developed by British scientists to help monitor the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.
2nd time ive seen this theory in a week
Almost 60% of patients who were subsequently confirmed as positive for COVID-19 had reported losing their sense of smell and taste, the data analyzed by the researchers showed.
That compared with 18% of those who tested negative.
It actually now shows up as a diagnostic trait in the "do you have coronavirus" list. So, yes. it's real.
Every morning I wake up and see how my smeller is doing. I've read that people can have no other symptoms than loss of smell. So it gives me a bit of peace to confirm each day that I can still smell. Weird, I know, but there it is.
Not weird, I do the same thing. I also take the deep breath and hold it for 10 seconds to check my lungs.

The NY numbers are hard to wrap my brain around, hard to imagine how something could spread so quickly! I have not heard an official explanation for it other than once Dr. Birx said either they had spread before they knew they did, or they have the transmission method wrong.

The loss of the sense of smell seems to be a pathognomonic symptom, which means that, this symptom alone, is enough to establish a diagnostic.
"In the current context, if you have lost the sense of Smell, and don't have a blocked nose, you are positive for Coronavirus. There is no need to get tested." said Dr Corré.

Interestingly, guess what is one of the symptoms of a Zinc deficiency...
Loss of smell.
Zinc isn’t something to mess around with. Two years ago, the FDA warned everyone to stop using zinc-containing nasal sprays to fight colds because these sprays had been linked to more than 100 cases of loss of smell.

Apparently the statistics from China are not reliable.

We compared the number of deaths over the first three months of this year with the average figure of the last three years, in order to verify the increase in mortality across Bergamo’s territory - explains Aldo Cristadoro, founder of InTwig and professor in Digital methods for social research at Bergamo University -. Our evaluation, carried out with great accuracy by means of the official data provided by each local administration, tells us that during the month of March more than 5.400 people have died, and approximately 4.500 of these are ascribable to coronavirus. One year ago, in March, the total deaths were almost 900
