LONDON (Reuters) - Losing your sense of smell and taste may be the best way to tell if you have COVID-19, according to a study of data collected via a symptom tracker app developed by British scientists to help monitor the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.

2nd time ive seen this theory in a week

Almost 60% of patients who were subsequently confirmed as positive for COVID-19 had reported losing their sense of smell and taste, the data analyzed by the researchers showed.

That compared with 18% of those who tested negative.

It actually now shows up as a diagnostic trait in the "do you have coronavirus" list. So, yes. it's real.

Every morning I wake up and see how my smeller is doing. I've read that people can have no other symptoms than loss of smell. So it gives me a bit of peace to confirm each day that I can still smell. Weird, I know, but there it is.

Not weird, I do the same thing. I also take the deep breath and hold it for 10 seconds to check my lungs.

I do that too! I've been walking daily (small neighborhood, no one's ever about) and I focus on breathing slow, deep breaths, holding, then slow release. Hey, as an added bonus, I've lost 10 pounds this month!

The NY numbers are hard to wrap my brain around, hard to imagine how something could spread so quickly! I have not heard an official explanation for it other than once Dr. Birx said either they had spread before they knew they did, or they have the transmission method wrong.

It spread everywhere before we were paying attention. I predicted NYC would be a nightmare because it's sooooo densely populated. Very similar to Wuhan. So many apartment buildings where it can rapidly spread and on top if it we were in denial that it's airborne. Had everyone been told to cover their face when they leave their home starting in Feb. things might have been less horrific. That should be a rule there NOW but it's only JUST starting to trickle in that... yeah... maybe you should cover your face.... after we've been told for a month that masks aren't necessary. Every time I look at their numbers I'm just... stunned.

The loss of the sense of smell seems to be a pathognomonic symptom, which means that, this symptom alone, is enough to establish a diagnostic.
"In the current context, if you have lost the sense of Smell, and don't have a blocked nose, you are positive for Coronavirus. There is no need to get tested." said Dr Corré.

Interestingly, guess what is one of the symptoms of a Zinc deficiency...

Loss of smell.

I heard Zinc usage was tied to loss of smell.

Zinc isn’t something to mess around with. Two years ago, the FDA warned everyone to stop using zinc-containing nasal sprays to fight colds because these sprays had been linked to more than 100 cases of loss of smell.

This is something I suspected from the get-go. I believe numbers from Europe and several other countries, but don't believe it from tightly state-controlled nations.

You all may have seen this already. Overall deaths in Bergamo Italy this March are much higher than previous years.

We compared the number of deaths over the first three months of this year with the average figure of the last three years, in order to verify the increase in mortality across Bergamo’s territory - explains Aldo Cristadoro, founder of InTwig and professor in Digital methods for social research at Bergamo University -. Our evaluation, carried out with great accuracy by means of the official data provided by each local administration, tells us that during the month of March more than 5.400 people have died, and approximately 4.500 of these are ascribable to coronavirus. One year ago, in March, the total deaths were almost 900

The Italian source: www.ecodibergamo.it...

And the Bloomberg article: www.bloomberg.com...

That's rather terrifying. If it's the same across the entire country it should show up in Italy's mortality stats which tracks all deaths of those above 65. Well, all deaths across 19 cities which excludes Bergamo for instance.

Starting it in its own country? In one of the most productive provinces?

No. I don't believe that. If it'd been biowarfare, they'd have a cure already in place and would have launched it in Hong Kong.

We've seen what Americans will embrace in the name of something that's killed 5,000 Americans, so they know something that's killed 70,000 Americans is surely good for even more public acceptance of over-reaches.
