He could have given a better answer, like.... Everyone should already have extra food in their house, for natural disasters, weather events and even pandemics.

OK. So it is established that you want panic shopping akin to what we see in Italy?

No. Nvm I don't want to engage in this debate with you. We disagree on this issue so that's fine

That's fine. I'm just not at all sure what you think you want. You seem unhappy with it no matter what it is.

That would be a fair response. Of course, they regularly tell people to do that all the time too, but most people don't.

Being realistic, we're going to have panic buying. It does zero good to be the only thoughtful, self restrained individual in the room. I think we're starting to see that right now. It's not so much panic buying over the virus, it's panic buying to ensure you're not kicked in the ass by the empty shelves you'll find when the actual virus caused panic buyers clear the stores out. Nobody wants dinner to be cloves and capers with a sauce of sugar free carmel syrup because that was all Fred Meyers had left in stock after the ravenous horde swept through 10 minutes before you arrived.

True, they do say that. But this guy flat out said no.
Just seems goofy... like he thought it was 'opposite day' or something.

Ugh. That sounds nasty.

How about two heaping spoonfuls of peanut butter, covered in honey?

I think they're trying to keep the flood gates from opening for as long as possible on it. It gives people time to build up what they need without wiping local supplies out especially with the disruptions coming out of China.

I agree it will happen, but right now, we don't need it to happen. Situations do change quickly, but not that quickly.

That's good.
Not good to eat, a good line.
You are right, at some point it will happen.

2nd (maybe third) case in Denmark now... in Copenhagen.

The guy had been skiing in Italy, just like the other one.

But this guy walked around for three days after getting home before his symptoms showed

The snowball is rolling.

Focusing only on the deaths is shortsighted and narrow minded

I would say, focusing on the numbers is very important, especially if the numbers show that only a small percentage of people will get meaningfully sick, and a much smaller percentage will get critically ill with risk of death.

This will allow us to focus our efforts on those most at risk, with those at extremely low risk feeling comfortable with staying home if they do start experiencing symptoms.

When this begins to take hold, there will be much more problems caused than those who die from the disease.

Yes, there will be a lot of problems from those who are at extremely low risk, panicking and running to their local emergency room at the first sign of a sniffle, overwhelming local resources.

The symptoms are relatively mild for most, but not all who are affected by this disease. One paper indicated that as many as 24.3% of those infected become severe cases requiring intensive medical treatment.

What paper? Other numbers show something very different, that only those over 70 are at serious risk, with dramatically lower risk rates for those 49 and under.

All subject to change of course...

Why do you think there are so many deaths in Italy?

Great question. Italy is an anomaly, as is Iran (though it has been posited that Iran is faking its leadership getting ill - maybe they are 'purging' their dissidents too).

So, absolutely, investigators should be focusing on these anomalies, and working very hard to get real, actual, trustable numbers.

Those are two ingredients in a lot of energy ball recipes for athletes.

Hmmm ... now that I think on it, those might be a good idea to have on hand. Low ingredient, high calorie, easy to store although they do take refrigeration, and good supplement to beans and rice and canned goods to keep calorie intake up.

The peanut butter only really needs refrigeration after you open it, but yes -- those were pretty much my thoughts. Hi cal, (some ) good fats, protein, low carb, nice quantities of vitamin E and niacin.

But mostly I like it because I can live off it for days at a time if my kids aren't home and my SO is out of town.

It could be that Italy, like a lot of EU countries has an aging population. This thing is more dangerous to older people. More older people will lead to more deaths.

I am pretty well going off the assumption that we're looking at disruptions to supply and requests to stay home as much as possible more than a total shutdown of everything.

I think we'll most likely see basic essentials like power and water continue to function, and they will have to keep at least bare essential supply chains going for food and things like that. You just won't want to go out shopping if you can help it. They'll have to focus on keeping those things going for medical supply and hospitals and basic emergency services.

The biggest value to having stuff on hand is to be able to stay home as asked for as long as possible. So I am hoping the refrigerator stays on ... but it may not. Either way, we'll have natural peanut butter will keep with its oil without needing to be chilled.
