Can anyone explain to me in real dumb terms what the 1000 point stock market fall today means in real terms for the average Jo who doesn't have stocks.

It means companies and investors are expecting widespread, possibly long-term disruptions to business and global supply chains.

I have been thinking this exact thing. I can see schools closing, cause they do that for 2 inches of snow Haha. But I can't see people not going to work. I haven't missed work for a single day no matter what. And if it gets serious and people stop going I'll just get heaps of OT so would still go.

I just heard from a friend in Sacramento. There is strong belief that the virus is in Sacramento and they are expecting an outbreak.
The quarantined at Travis AFB infected civilians and base personnel who then carried it into the community.
Now 2 college students in Sacramento have been in contact with someone who tested positive.

This may be the first cluster case in the US. Now we will get to see how they will respond. Do they intend to quarantine the city?
There are approx. 500,000 people so it would make a good first test case.
This is just so scary.

I am going to be completely honest here.

Yesterday on my way home on interstate 64 just east of St Los, I noticed a substantial number of unmarked police cars traveling west bound. I pay attention to this because I like to go a little above average the speed limit.

Now I am in no way saying that this is connected. I am just throwing out an observation I made yesterday. For all I know there could have been a convention.

In simplest terms possible...
This is bad.

Hell, they have shut down school for my kids due to a weather forecast.... twice.
The forecast was for snow, we didn't get a flake... but the kids didn't have school because it was supposed to snow.

There will be school closings as soon as we have positive tests on students or teachers, for sure.

It is looking more like a worldwide reset is about to occur.
We shall see.

I will still be the same old schmuck that I have been.

It means central banks and governments are likely going to start up QE again (technically they've already been doing it way before nCov but called it "not QE-QE") but it probably will only stave off a larger correction and decrease in asset prices

...and that's exactly why a lot of businesses will opt to close their doors during this. Anyone with perfect school or work attendance hasn't stayed home when sick and is likely a risk to come in if the had Coronavirus, which just spreads the pestilence even faster.

I think your instincts are right on. Sacramento has the coronavirus circulating with many not showing symptoms yet.
My friend has refused to listen to my concerns and has not prepped at all.
But all of a sudden there has been a complete turnaround in attitude and genuine fear.

It would make sense for authorities to start to position security around the city and guard certain areas like the state capital building.
I know someone who works in it and will try and find out more.

I was at my local Rite Aid pharmacy yesterday and I heard the lady working the counter telling the lady in front of me that they had no masks or gloves in stock.
I stopped in at Harbor Freight and they did have respirators, masks and gloves in good supply.... but that could change in a matter of short time, given what we are dealing with.

The calm down thing doesnt work with me. Arguing simply to nitpick and argue for arguments sake is stupid. I dont care how you read it.. or twist it...

Man, you're really having a bad day I guess... sorry...

I didn't twist anything. I quoted you exactly.

Making a statement suggesting that everyone will get extremely sick from this thing is fear-mongering, regardless of your past posting history on the subject.

Ive been anti fearmongering since the first thread.

Fyi, I don't keep a list of different posters handy with a scale indicating their positions/leanings.

Maybe you are projecting and youre freaking out bordering on hysteria since you read hysteria into every post.

Obviously not, since, again, I quoted you precisely, and on its face, your post cannot be read any other way without giving you a large benefit of the doubt. I only do that for people I know pretty well.

If you dont, by now, realize there are super spreaders and asymptomatic spreaders

Maybe there are - but has it been proven for either?

From what I've read, they aren't even sure how it spreads, so it is impossible to say such things with any degree of certainty, other than to say, 'it is spreading, somehow'.

and when you get sick its sick as hell bur doesnt mean death for certain.

Again, that is simply not true, and amounts to fear-mongering.

Of those who 'get sick', some get 'sick as hell'. Others have very mild symptoms.

Anyway, feel free to continue pretending you didn't/aren't saying what you did/are.

Or, you could, I dunno - just say 'Well, yeah, going back and reading what I said, I see what you mean.'...

Where I am at, they'll shut down school for bad roads, heavy weather, and cold conditions. Our district straddles an economic divide between parents with some money and those who have not enough, so they cannot count on all the kids having parents who will or can afford to kit them out properly to wait on a bus in the cold if roads are chancy.

I'm not sure how they'll handle illness like this. We really should call and ask. Most parents likely won't have the fortitude or discipline to keep up an home schooling regimen even if provided the materials. We would especially since husband would almost certainly be 100% WFH at that point.

The dicier aspect is that district testing is coming up in April.

Lost over $1,000 in the past week in my personal trading account and separately my 401K (it's not much, was like $12,000 and I don't contribute to it anymore) is wayyy down.

It's definitely going to get messier. Sold out of most of my positions (it's so crazy, even all of my gold stocks went down 20+%)

At least I hit the grocery store before work today and got 2 lbs of rice, mac & cheese, a canister of oatmeal and 2 packets of chorizo that I love (might not be able to get it in the near future)!!!

In 2008 my grandmother went from $500,0000 to $50,000 when the market crashed. She didn't think she'd live long enough to see it come back. She was afraid she'd lose it all so she bailed on the market.

What the WHO has done with this thing is nothing short of criminal. Refuse to call it a pandemic, giving people terrible advice, UN's puppet that did nothing to help this and only made it worse.

US politicians also saying "Don't stock up on food at home" to try to lower stress levels of the general populous. ALSO criminal!

This will go down in history! The "leaders" are screwing this up as if they want it to spread everywhere.

And Trump saying everything is fine and the US will be fine is complete bull# too

I know where you are talking about being from Illinois originally. Right now I live in south western IN, and we hear life flight go over every single day and night normally, but for the last few days...I have been hearing what sounds like a much louder (military?) chopper going over at night about 1 or 1:30 am. I was able to go out the night before last but forgot my binoculars so I couldn't make out what it was. From just my eyes, it was a fairly low flying chopper and bigger than life-flight in size. Not sure if that means anything or not either, but normally there might only be a military chopper going over about 3-4 times a year over my house.

It's really sad, a lot of people are going to lose retirement, life's savings, etc. My mother is NOT wealthy at all and has lost $65K (before today) in her retirement account.

The other tough thing is our brother managers her money (that's NEVER good to mix family and finances)

Meanwhile the elites and insiders probably sold near the top, and hedge funders & money managers who shorted this thing probably made a fortune. Makes me sick to my stomach
