Sorry but bill maher is far from an authoritative figure on the subject. There is ample evidence that various biblical characters existed. While the evidence for moses is contentious, some of the locations and activities described in exodus have been corroborated with archaeological finds. New evidence is being unearthed daily to suggest that the bible narrative is not completely mythical as you assert.

The real debate among people capable of rational thought surrounds the more fantastic claims of the bible. But many of the people, places, and historical information discussed in the bible have been remarkably accurate. The consensus on the historicity of Jesus does not agree with your assertion that it is a myth.

I am completely open to debating the veracity of some of the more fantastic claims in the bible, and fully willing to admit that there are some problems with the chronology of certain events described in it, and archaeological finds. There are various theories on these discrepancies however, so to simply assert that the whole thing is a made up fairytale is a pretty bold proclamation on your part, especially given the fact that there are a large number of people who have devoted their entire lives to studying this subject who disagree with you.

If anything, it's become obvious that no amount of evidence would be sufficient for you anyways, and I am probably wasting my breath. But I don't argue here for your sake (since your mind is obviously made up), but for the sake of others who might read this thread in search of answers, and assume yours is the only one.

Jesus was never a teacher of practical philosophy and anyone that would say such a thing is so ignorant that they should find some profession other than official Jesus debunker. Even if Jesus is not believed by personas like this they should know enough to know that he was not a philosopher. For Petes sake man.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED.

Was it C.S. Lewis who first noted . . .

Jesus was either WHO AND WHAT HE SAID HE WAS

OR HE WAS A LUNATIC.

There's no room for a middle ground of claiming he was merely a great philosophical teacher of wonderful sociologically sound principles.

When did I say the bible narrative is 'completely mythical'? !!! What???

Yeah, I am talking about the "more fantastic claims of the bible"....like: virgin births, miracles, revelations, etc....

And I said earlier, very clearly, that SOME of the names and places may be real....but the rest is a work of HISTORICAL FICTION.

Calling Abraham, Moses and/or Jesus mythical

is the opposite of DENYING IGNORANCE.

Oh my word.

*facepalm*

Really? BO, I know you couldn't care less what I think about you and your character and your 'professional behavior', but....
WHAT???

THEY ARE MYTHS. Mythical. Just like Zeus, Aphrodite, Venus, Odin, Cupid, Apollo, ALL OF THEM.

IT IS MYTHOLOGY.

The New Testament record as well as other records are an incredible pile of evidence.

Evidence of what? A virgin birth? Water turning to wine? That we are saved by the innocent blood of a teacher? That the dead are resurrected in their bodies, and when they come back, they're hungry and still bear their wounds?

A lot of novels are set in realistic setting and their plots entail real people, places and events. But the stories, never the less, are fiction.

Example

They are fiction because you don't believe them.

You probably wouldn't believe he walked on water had the Romans recorded it. Now you will probably say but they didn't record the event. Nonetheless had they you still would believe.

That reminds me the new series of The Walking Dead should start soon.

Anyway why is it people think Jesus was an actual as described person when the bible is full of mythology, impossibility, and strait up lies?

I just don't get it. 99.99% of the world knows unicorns arent real and never were but the bible talks about them. How about some fossil evidence for that one. Hey we keep finding missing links I just posted a thread the other day on it. The only evidence we have for the bible is that the stories were set in places that once existed and stories about stories.

Where is the evidence? Oh yeah....faith.

Bill Maher . . .

qualifies most as an expert on

--arrogance
--blathering
--dual orifi farting
--irrational oxymorons passed off as brilliant philosophy
--supporting global oligarchy goals and methods
--calling evil good
--hedonism
--verbal outrages and excesses
--rebellion
--contrariness as a religion
--spiteful obnoxiousness
. . .

. . .

yada yada yada.

I don't think I'd insult my dog by asking Bill Maher to dog sit him.

What a miserable excuse for a human being pretending to know anything about anything.

The whole idea that he could have anything illuminating to say about anything of substance and redemptive quality merit is laughable to the max.

. . . least of all . . . Christianity.

AS though that had anything to do with scholarly factual research, investigation, historicity etc.

Yet, many such folks will believe New Age "crystal" magic and other nonsense in a flash.

One of my part time local missionary friends knows the Mexican pastor who

REQUIRES anyone wanting to be a pastor

to have AT LEAST 10 BONAFIDE RESURRECTIONS FROM THE VERY DEAD to his record BEFORE the elder pastor will consent to train him and disciple him as a becoming pastor.

However,

hereon . . . contrary to our ATS motto

many are worshipful of the pattern of FLUANTING IGNORANCE vs denying it.

The fact you are getting so upset could be viewed as an indication you are not approaching the subject rationally, don't you think? Maybe it's time to take a break?

Even Richard Dawkins admits that there is WAYYYY too much scientific proof Jesus Existed.

His disciples would not martyr themselves for a good old joke.

Dawkins did pull the "Bill Mahar" and say some historians think Jesus might not have existed until his colleagues called him out and he redacted his stance despite his hatred of christianity.

In fact Dawkins could not name 1, not even a single ancient historian who took up the stance that Jesus was a myth!

Like I've said, BO...
YOU WORRY ME.

I can scarcely beleive you hold a state license for counseling. You are as delusional as MANY of the clients I treated in my tenure.

Wow.

WOW.

You all just....yeah....congrats....you have 'shut me up.' These ridiculous 'rebuttals' are so ludicrous that I can't even respond appropriately to the ....the..... inanity. Yeah, that's the word. Inanity.
Absurdity, if you like. That works too.

Or "ASININE" (asininity?) ... that would also work.

So, I'll ask you, too, BO.
WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
WHAT IS THE WORST THING you can imagine if you are wrong, and EVERYONE gets salvation??????

Take a break?

No, it's time for YOU ALL to take some really, really deep breaths...and tell me WHAT it is you are afraid of!

I'm not upset...
I'm exquisitely befuddled that people exist and walk around and about thinking these stories are REAL.

Gha.

Okay, you're right. I'ma go lie down, get some sleep, and bemuse myself about what nonsense is rattling around between the ears of you all who refuse to join the modern era.

The fear claim is more reasonably leveled at those who are hostile to Christianity.

The likelihood appears to be much more the case that the FEAR is on the part of Christ's naysayers . . . their hostility appears to come out of their terror that the New Testament record is most likely accurate and true.

There's no reasonable justification for all the hostility toward authentic Christians and authentic Christianity.

I'm quite calm.

Quite secure in the Lord's Love, Spirit and Power.

BTW, I taught at university here and in Asia and counseled part time in agencies. Didn't get the license. I hated the professional ostentatiousness associated with the realm of the profession.

Now you have something else to rant and rage about.

What a caring sweetie.

Historians looks for early sources. Christianity has them. There [are] no other ancient documents that have close sources like the New Testament does.

[THAT'S JUST A FACT.]

Don't forget Saul of Tarsus. He was a contemporary of Jesus and he was approving of killing Christians.

That is enemy attestation and Historians use that also for data.

So Saul became Paul the Apostle and within 25 years after Jesus resurrection Paul wrote his first epistle. He named
eyewitnesses, met with the other Apostles and an early creed came out months after Jesus resurrection that Paul talks about in 1 Cor 15 and that is the goldmine for Historians.

Alexander the Great was written about 400 years after he died.
I'd rather trust information close to the source because there will be no
time for myths and fables to pop up.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED.

The blathering masses on such threads merely illustrate most vividly their ignorance of true scholarship on the topics they rant so outrageously against.

WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF?

EVIDENTLY . . . THEY ARE AFRAID OF THE TRUTHS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.
