Hell no.

All the statistics you posted about calories and sugar are irrelevant.
It's no ones business what others decide to eat or drink.
Banning drinks ... that's the government being INVASIVE and ignorant.
(typical Boomberg idiocy)

Again .. interesting to some people but irrelevant when it comes to the government over reaching. It's no ones business what I eat or drink .. or why I eat or drink what I do. And laws to make sodas smaller ... totally ignorant and overreaching the role of government.

If this issue was truly about the health and welfare of the people that the govt loves and relies upon so desperately they would ban alcohol and a wide array of "energy" drinks that have flooded the markets and that are purchased regularly by our nation's youth without a bat of an eyelash by the govt. i.e. Bloomberg et.al...

If they cared, they would ban high calorie drinks at Starbucks, desserts of all sorts, etc etc etc.... How about cigarettes.....?? chewing tobacco, Nyquil,. blah blah blah.

This is about one thing only. CONTROL!! one baby step at a time....

If someone wants to buy a Big Gulp so be it, They want a triple scotch on the rocks ...OK with me... Its a Free Country where people are free to make the decision between water, milk, juice, soda, beer, cocktails, coffee, tea, lattes, milkshakes, smoothies and beyond...

As far as people getting fat. and being out of shape I would look to a variety of other factors that have infected the average lifestyle of most people in America. Work/home lifestyle, being chained to a desk, chained to I pads, I phones, computers, twitter, facebook, video game consoles, etc etc etc. All of that crap follows us everywhere we go 24 hours a day. People are sleeping less, they are not as physically active, they are stressed about work, money, they are jobless, hopeless, dependent on the govt for daily existence or wondering the next paycheck will be big enough to pay the bills..... etc etc etc...

Time to slow everything down and take a big flippin' breath. Oh, how I miss the old days of inner office mail. Now people demand answers and response within minutes of sending an electronic message of any sort.

Soda...??? I don't think so...

Sorry for the rant... it's been a rough morning

Nice blanket statement. That's like saying all Canadians like hockey, or all Indians like spicy food, or all Australians like Foster's.

How bout you stop being so ignorant.

Sorry if you read my words as being ignorant holyTerror, but that was not the aim of my question.

Maybe i should have worded my phrase in another way, but if you look around you and ask the average American how much soda he/she drinks you will be surprised that the consumption is much more in the USA compared to other countries.

I know for a fact that here in France more wine is consumed than in other countries throughout the world and so what?

Hi folks, this thread is especially targeted so to speak to our American members as we all know how much you like your soda.

My question to you all "taking into account of course health issues related to the consumption of large quantities of certain sodas" is the following : Would you accept that large sugary sodas be banned altogether and if yes/no, why?

Taking into consideration the following of course :

Sugar and calorie content for a cup of cola from a typical fountain according to :

nutrition.about.com...

12-ounce cup (child size): 23 grams sugar and 95 calories
16-ounce cup (small): 31 grams sugar and 128 calories
21-ounce cup (medium): 44 grams sugar and 180 calories
32-ounce cup (large): 65 grams sugar and 267 calories

And also this :

Sure, there’s nothing quite like soda to go along with that burger and fries you’ve decided to have for lunch. Not unless you care about what you put in your body and what long-term effects it is going to have on your well-being. If you do care about your health and your body, however, take a look at the harmful effects of soda consumption over time according to :

www.termlifeinsurance.org...

For information :

(Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed on Monday to appeal a judge's ruling that struck down his pioneering ban on large sugary drinks sold by the city's restaurants, movie theaters and other food service businesses just a day before it was to take effect.

www.reuters.com...

Looking forward to reading your responses.

Funny thing is that fruit juices contain just about as much sugar as soda.

Of course there are worse things a person can do and i was going to compile a list but it would just be a waste of time...after all, we all know what those things are.

I dont drink soda myself. My body is my temple.

when i was in America last, i heard on the radio that some local politician wanted to restrict cup sizes to combat the sugar filled soda 'situation', I didnt think that was a particularly great idea.....

"treats" are being regarded as everyday sustenance, water isnt what a child asks for when they are thirsty any more, they ask for a *insert brand here* soda.

Frankly i wish my parents banned me from sugar drinks, i do like the taste (exactly what its designed for, from the labs to the palette), but i wish i could just settle for a standard glass of water.

Humans are greedy, we do things we like as much as possible in the moment - drugs, sex, soda, food, crime, violence and so on. Its all down to self control, which is near impossible while the person sitting next to you is eating/drinking the exact thing you crave. Its like wallmart, we hate the place, it ruins small business, it promotes all the wrong things - yet where do we all shop?

Good post. When I get the urge for a soda I just add a generous squirt of lemon or lime juice to my water. Craving is satisfied. For some reason, the raw lemon does it for me. I still have a soda once in a while but rarely more than one can of it at home or ordered with a meal.

Sounds like you are craving or maybe even need sugar.

When i worked long hours with another person he would say "well i got my sugar and i got my salt". Sometimes when things are put into such simplistic terms it gives you a different perspective. Like getting to the root of it all, clear away the extraneous, get to the meat of the issue...but, i digress. Seriously though, i think these things are hard wired into us and if you really think about it what tastes do we know? Basically sugar and salt, as if for a period you get no salt your body will tell you to "get that salt bagel".

I firmly believe that soda, along with other common american foods found in fast food joints and nearly everything on grocery store shelves, cause cancer and disease when consumed on a regular basis. I personally don't feed my family any of this junk. We are an organic, non gmo household.

With that said, I believe in personal liberty and freedom. While I don't want to be force fed these foods, I also expect others don't want to be forced to eat or not eat what the big government tells them. We are all responsible for ourselves. People can take the time to learn for themselves what is healthy or not, and people can decide to live by the "ignorance is bliss" motto. To each their own. Some people care about being healthy, while others just care about "enjoying life". (By the way, some people I know like to call this natural selection.)

As long as no one takes away my liberty and my freedom to decide what I want for myself.

The issue is....banning......of anything.

Adults have the right to choose their poison......period.

Don't be stupid. If your statement was taken literally, then it would be considered acceptable for our government to distribute literal rat poison in ring pops advertised as such. Sure it's poison and we should have the freedom to take it if we want, but does that mean that our government should distribute and condone the use of it? No. Don't be a dimwit, cigarettes and soda at the very least shouldn't even be a part of our diet AT ALL. Ban all tobacco and soda use in public places, make it available to use only in private quarters. Don't incarcerate people who drink Coke, but don't mass produce it and sell it on every street corner and in every restaurant. You wouldn't want dispensaries handing out pills to every one that increases their risk for heart disease or cancer by 30%, so why would you want cigarettes and soda just as easily available? Doesn't make sense when ya just, walk it through.

I don't want to ban sodas, cigarettes, etc. as long as I don't have to pay extra for increased medical costs for those people who have their hands out for free medical care to take care of their diabetes and lung cancer. Unfortunately my premiums have gone up under Obamacare portion for the uninsured. Those on foodstamps without medical insurance shouldn't be allowed to buy sugary drinks or salty junk food if I'm paying for it with my hard earned tax dollars.

while i disagree with the banning of anything i also disagree with your premise that sugar is not addictive
as someone who used to frequently consumes far more sugar than is healthy i can assure you that sugar is in fact very addictive (not like cigarettes or heroine or anything like that but it will compel you to consume more....and not just for the sweet taste..... im not really sure how to go about describing that but im sure you know)

My son wrestles and has to drop a few pounds here and there. Sugar is the first thing out. I notice that after just a day or two he starts asking for more rice and potatos ect. Thats his body trying to compensate and accessing parts of his brain, communicating the need to make up the carbs and it is then verbalized. I have never brought this observation to his attention and he not old enough to figure it out himself.

It doesn't have anything to do with what is good or bad for me, it's my right to choose. Point: I really enjoy a good cigar. For me, that's better than a bottle of the finest wine [ sorry oenophiles ] or a hot fudge sundae. I know they are bad for me, I know they can cause mouth cancer, but It's My Choice. I do not need or want some government nanny watching over me, telling me what to eat, drink or smoke.
ETA - I drink maybe 1 soda a month. I prefer fruit juice, raspberry tea, coffee or flavored water. To be honest, mostly coffee.

I had to cut salt way back some time ago. Now and then I will have a small bag of chips and get sort of an endorphin load out of it. The last time I did it my body just said.....aaahhhh. And that was just salt.

dont forget that: people do what they know how to.

If you know somthings bad for you but you like it, you dont do it much, too many people assume that because theres a coke machine in the school, coca cola as a permanent every day hydration solution.

changing the cup sizes does nothing to prevent 'abuse', though... if they made the cup sizes SO SMALL and put the machines far apart, people might burn off some of that sugar going back and forth so much

I drink one coke can about once every two weeks. I am more of a meat and potatoes kind of gal to begin with.

I occassionally buy those monsterous stripes cokes (basically for the large plastic cups) they are always handy and refillable. If I had to choose, it will be some mesquite sirloin steak over a huge coke and not both btw.

Sounds a little like my type of consumption as soda goes, although i have a heavy pennchant for natural fruit juices (probably 3 litres per day) but without added sugar.

Hmmm... as for the surloin steak... i would go for a good bottle of Malbec or Cabernet (or if i had one left somewhere in my wine cellar a nice bottle of Château St Georges St Emilion 1966).. yum yum
