Hi folks, this thread is especially targeted so to speak to our American members as we all know how much you like your soda.

My question to you all "taking into account of course health issues related to the consumption of large quantities of certain sodas" is the following : Would you accept that large sugary sodas be banned altogether and if yes/no, why?

Taking into consideration the following of course :

Sugar and calorie content for a cup of cola from a typical fountain according to :

nutrition.about.com...

12-ounce cup (child size): 23 grams sugar and 95 calories
16-ounce cup (small): 31 grams sugar and 128 calories
21-ounce cup (medium): 44 grams sugar and 180 calories
32-ounce cup (large): 65 grams sugar and 267 calories

And also this :

Sure, there’s nothing quite like soda to go along with that burger and fries you’ve decided to have for lunch. Not unless you care about what you put in your body and what long-term effects it is going to have on your well-being. If you do care about your health and your body, however, take a look at the harmful effects of soda consumption over time according to :

www.termlifeinsurance.org...

For information :

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed on Monday to appeal a judge's ruling that struck down his pioneering ban on large sugary drinks sold by the city's restaurants, movie theaters and other food service businesses just a day before it was to take effect.

The issue is....banning......of anything.

Adults have the right to choose their poison......period.

What is it always with those fitness-fanatics and their dislike of sugar? Is it a forbidden substance? You think its a drug, right? Nope, it is not. Everyone can go along without sugar. Same with fat. We all could nibble on some tasteless soylent green to survive - but you know what?

I. Don't. Want. To. Live. Like. That!

My bloodsugar is extremely (and to me surprisingly) well, despite a decades-long abuse of sodas and sweets. My BMI is not affected by sugar, as I do enough sports to use its energies.

Therefore, I use my freedom to buy and eat and drink as much sugar-induced sweets and sodas as I like. Problem?

I'd be fine. I started drinking water on a regular basis about 6-8 months ago and now I can't get enough. I'm addicted to water. Now if only I could start feeling the same way about fruits and vegetables, I'd be all set.

You looking to start a fight rodinus?

I for one stay as far away from NY and Bloomberg as possible.

I steer away from the one drink that lord bloomberg makes an exception for that is diet sodas that contain aspartame or artificial sweeteners.

I met an autistic 4 year old the other day, can you guess what his drink of choice was?

while i disagree with the banning of anything i also disagree with your premise that sugar is not addictive
as someone who used to frequently consumes far more sugar than is healthy i can assure you that sugar is in fact very addictive (not like cigarettes or heroine or anything like that but it will compel you to consume more....and not just for the sweet taste..... im not really sure how to go about describing that but im sure you know)

By the way this:

12-ounce cup (child size): 23 grams sugar and 95 calories
16-ounce cup (small): 31 grams sugar and 128 calories
21-ounce cup (medium): 44 grams sugar and 180 calories
32-ounce cup (large): 65 grams sugar and 267 calories

is wrong.

We Americans take pride in our overindulgence. A Large Soda is 64 ounces, Thats a big gulp. and it goes down great with a bucket of popcorn and some sugary snacks.

Much agreed that you should be allowed to choose your own poison, BUT the figures according to the USA center for disease control and prevention states that over 37.5% of adults are either overweight or obese leading to obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death (I have not yet found figures for children yet but will try my best)

See link : www.cdc.gov...

I smoke (but am trying to stop), i also like an occasional glass of good wine (i will not stop) and these are my choices, however, if someone takes the initiative to try and ban certain products that cause serious major population health problems which by the following lead to humongous amounts of public money ; (YOUR) hard earned money being spent to cover these problems... then think about it!

People need to go for Kombucha. Fizzy like pop, yet also probiotic ! Much tastier and less calories by a long shot.

Blueberry Ginger Kombucha, yummy.

Everyone does something or has genetics that cause something that may or may not increase health costs.

It's a gamble, and I don't think our choices should be limited by banning certain things because there is no end to what could be considered bad, wrong or imperfect.

The old slippery slope. Then on to eugenics etc.

In the US we live by our constitution....we are born with the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Banning soda is not in the Constituiton. Most of what our government pushes on us is unconstitutional including Universal healthcare.

No i am not looking for a fight, i do not think that my OP was at all agressive (and if you feel that it is, then my apologies for having hurt anyones feelings), i was just asking a question to see how you all feel about the cancelled soda ban and would you agree or not to LARGE or EXTRA LARGE (maybe i forgot this word) sodas to be banned and according to your choice WHY?

Kindest respects

To answer your question they will buy 3 or 4 small and pay taxes 3x or 4x
and im very sure those taxes will then go to medical care for people with
blood sugar problems right......

Thank you for your pertinent remark txinfidel...

Actually if you took time to read my OP and the different links i was asking you all a question, not saying how much i care or how i am "trying to help you" as you put it.

As i am someone who lives outside of the USA i am extremely interested in your opinions in comparison to my own cultural differences.

again i disagree with banning anything but i understand your point of view
i think it would probably be best to allow people to make to make decisions for themselves but perhaps increase the taxes on products that have an excessive amount of sugar, fat ,etc. to help offset the costs incurred by the tax payer that does not indulge in such things (but there have to be stipulations that the tax cannot be excessive.... that you cant tax more than the costs incurred as a means of deterring people from consuming these products if that is their choice as well as a stipulation that revenue generated through the tax will in fact go to a fund dedicated to dealing with medical problems rather than some kind of general fund to be budgeted at a later time)

i think that is fair and reasonable

I understand we have cultural differences.

The thing you dont seem to understand is that in America we are free to choose. It is not up to somebody else to make our decisions for us.

I dont know where you are from.

But this is the way society is in America and its important you understand that.

We are free to choose. You are free to think about it whatever you want, but frankly we never asked and honestly we dont care.

No, honestly.

You sound like Michelle Obama up in here.

Quite frankly we are fed up with it and sick of it.

Good day.

I honestly dont care. I pay for my health care. Everyone else should butt out.

And as far as health care, even if it was public:
You inhale more smog and pollution from cars than by being a smoker. A smoker in the rural country is MUCH healthier than a smoker in the city. The average NON smoker as well. So all the bans in the world wont help.

I would bet that GMO city health food is worse for you than all the butter ,corn and other crap eaten in the country.

Sugar?
Caribbeans eat and drink astronomical amounts of it in addition to literally CHEWING on the stuff (sugar cane). They live to like 100......no health care what so ever. They are also NOT bad looking.

Leave adults to their choices. Everything from mandatory seat belts, to smoking bans, fatty food bans, to now telling me how much Soda I can drink.

Literally, go *snip* yourself,
(NOT YOU OP). I understand why you post this. I take issue with the gems that come up with this stuff....

also Roduinus.

the ban was supposed to start tomorrow in NYC, but I heard a judge struck it down because its unconstitutional and it is unconstitutional.

so there is nothing more to talk about. Mayor bloomberg is a p##sy and will find himself on a ship back to England someday I promise.

quite frankly i think "we are" fed up with and sick of the attitude you yourself seem to display (most of us anyway)
where he is from matters little if the points he makes are valid or are you not mature enough to handle a conversation in which points counter to your own are displayed?
