ATS went through a powerful DDos attack. For those of you with 200 posts or more, the site adminsitrators have been discussing it in the "Really Above Top Secret" Forum. Thread called "ATS was the target of a significant DDoS attack.,".

The thread asks not to repost any direct info on any other thread.

Peace

I have been wondering about that as well but find this map better as it has a globe that can be spun to match the points, the only thing i don't like is it uses NSWE rather than +- latitude and longitude

Has anyone noticed that the USGS earthquake list has stalled at
4.0 2013/04/04 16:30:52 31.225 -115.913 5.0 BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

They haven't even posted:
2013-04-04 18:47:47.0 33.06 N 142.74 E 2 4.9 OFF EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN

Why is USGS not posting ALL quakes that are 4.5 or greater worldwide. It seems that ESMC doesn't list any quakes under 4.5 in north america either. it is really hard to get the whole picture with the way they are listing these, anyone else have a problem with this practice, and is there a better place that has a complete list?

I really like the ESMC global map as you can put in a specified date to start and end the data displayed but because is is missing so many north american quakes you can't see the patterns that emerg when you run the animation

ha! can't tell you what it says because its secret

I've never bought into that antipodial thing, or even that one quake triggers another (unless they are on the same fault) and not including aftershocks.
I've never seen it happen more than on a few occasions, if it was the case central Spain would have a lot more quakes than it actually does (antipode of the North Island of NZ) , and I ask you when was the last time you heard of a quake "o/s E of Uruguay" ? (the antipode of Honshu, Japan)
Remember that earthquakes happen on the crust of the earth and shock waves cannot penetrate the molten core of the Earth, therefore they have to travel 20,000km+ around the crust to get to the Antipode.
More likely the next door fault would go first don't you think?

first: i realize that secrets wont be told. im saying that if, at some point someone is allowed to inform the lesser posters that it would be nice to know what happened.

the antipodes dont line up precisely, they tend to be on faults nearest the antipode, where the local pressure can be released.

The rools is these!

We (USGS) don't post all quakes 'cos what they (EMSC) may say or they (GFZ) may say is not wot we sez so if they sez it are 4.9 and we says it are 4.4 then we doesn't post it OK Lolz?

We (EMSC) only posting smaller stuff in Urop 'cos Urop is more important than Merca and there are way to many small quakes in Merca to bother our backsides about. Just who do they think they are? Greece??

/end of rools

Fact is that no single provider covers the whole world for all magnitudes. This is why people like me write programs to download many sources and why people like Gobal Incident and RSOE do the same and post these on the web. Another good source is the Earthquake Mashup site in Germany which lists USGS, EMSC and Potsdam (GFZ).

None of these however cover the smaller quakes in various other places where there be dragons such as Chile, but EMSC has now started covering down to 2.0 there I think.

It has to be said that smaller quakes (below Mag 4.5) are really only of local interest - in fact you could say the same of any under Mag 6 - and don't contribute much to the world picture. This is NOT to say they are unimportant. A bunch of mag 2 and 3 in Old Yeller would raise a few eyebrows round the world, but no one would think a great deal of the same in Greece.

If you have Windows you can download my software (see my signature) and that will give you USGS, EMSC, Geonet (New Zealand) and GeoScience (Australia) - all in one listing. The standard version is free (and is just having some additions to it)

Otherwise you need to use one of the sites I have mentioned but be aware that some sites are not so quick to remove duplicates.

If you would like to provided funding of about $1,000,000,000 initial investment Muzzy and I will ensure that the whole world is reported from all corners of the earth and oceans from Mag 1 upwards from a single global GL Network beamed directly to realtime to servers that provide 24/7 listings updated at one minute intervals.

Azerbaijan starts construction of four new seismic stations
5 April 2013, 19:14 (GMT+05:00)

en.trend.az/regions/scaucasus/azerbaijan/2136108.html

According to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, funds were allocated for the construction of four new buildings for seismic stations, the National Seismological Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan told Trend on Friday.

According to the centre, the construction work has already started in the Fizuli, Agdam, Beylagan and Yardimli regions. Completion of construction works is expected in the next few months.

The equipment that will be installed at the stations has already been delivered to the country. Its installation will take place following the completion of construction works.

In addition, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) is working on the preparation of the preliminary design to install three bottom seismographs to sea bottom seismographs in the sea. The seismographs will be installed by experts of the U.S. Kinemetrics Company in the Umid, Bahar and Chirag fields.

The U.S. Kinemetrics Company acts as a supplier of seismic equipment. There are 31 seismic monitoring stations operating in the country. All stations are connected to the satellite system.

The head-end is located in Baku in the Academic town, where information from vibration sensors installed in seismically active part of the country is delivered regularly via the satellite in real time. After processing the data, the system provides information about the exact location of the earthquake, its strength and time.

The corporate network of the National Seismological Centre is serviced by Delta Telecom.

Google "DDos attack" yourself for clarification.

Re the Antipodes, nearest fault eh?
well I was just doing something on 02/08/2012 and thought I'd throw this one through your Antipode map thingy

2012/08/02 09:38:30.85 -8.4140 -74.2590 144.60 6.10 Mw 698 Peru-Brazil Border
and the Antipode is offshore Vinh Chau, (South) Vietnam

The reason I used this one is because there was another 6 just afterwards, sort of in the same band width of latitude
2012/08/02 09:56:41.74 -4.6540 153.2750 46.00 6.10 Mw 409 New Ireland
that I thought might be close to the Antipode, but its 5457km and a couple of tectonic faults away from Vinh Chau

sorry I just don't buy into it, when it comes to earthquakes
