EVALUATION

NO DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.

HOWEVER - EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL
TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN
A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES
IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS
POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

THE JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY MAY ALSO ISSUE TSUNAMI MESSAGES
FOR THIS EVENT TO COUNTRIES IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC AND SOUTH
CHINA SEA REGION. IN CASE OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION... THE
MORE CONSERVATIVE INFORMATION SHOULD BE USED FOR SAFETY.

7.5 Quake just hit off of Japan-- near Fukushima (Nuke plant that melted down).. and before the mag 9 in 2011, a 7.2(edited 7.3!) quake was a foreshock.. hope this isn't another foreshock.. if Japan has another 9+ quake, all 4 of those nuke plants will fail, and push all the radioactive water into the Pacific ocean

Along with all those 100's of huge tanks full of toxic radioactive water....

oh geez.. I sure hope its not another foreshock.

don't go there

7.3 off Japan

Or maybe no more damage?

That is pretty bad one. 7.3 in only 5 km deep? Yes, high change for tsunami. There is pretty bad weather and its middle of night.

First it started out as many of the smaller earthquakes we had the past month but then it became quite intense for a couple seconds and things were rattling and shifting.
I could hear and see people waking up but noone went out because it's heavily raining because of the typhoon.
Witness location : Tsukuba (Japan) (427 km W from epicenter)

Seems like tsunami warning was cancelled. Anyway this was close to Fukushima.

No 7.5 on USGS.. does it show it on GEE?

Just a question.. with no real aftershocks showing up, can that lead more credence to it being a foreshock, especially in this area?

Not being all doomy, just asking.

Awesome thread OP I starred and flagged it. This is what makes ATS a GREAT home!
We need more people like you that do your research before posting and then letting everyone give their opinions.

I have been watching the earthquakes around the world as well (I have an app on my Ipad) yes that is how big of a nerd I am.. hehehe

Good Job OP!

GEE & NEID seem awfully quiet for there having been such a big 'quake. Off the top of my head, I want to say it seems like the region should be generating more aftershocks than just this lone 5.1 so far, based off my memory of previous 6's & 7's.

Hopefully this was all the pent-up energy there was, Japan does not need anything else thrown at it.

If anyone is interested,
here are a couple of links for Japan's eq site:

A few aftershocks so far according to this.

This quake is just another wake up call about how vulnerable the Fukushima Daiichi plant and it's fuel storage facilities are. If this had been directly under the nuke plant or stronger but a little further out it could have collapsed one or more of the spent fuel pools. Its just a matter of time and there is still WAAYY too much spent fuel that could become uncovered and spew radiation, not to mention the fragile condition of the ground and the buildings. AND WHERE THE HECK ARE THOSE THREE MULTI TON CORIUMS????

And, of course, no mention of this anywhere on the MSM. Grrrrr! I got the notice via email and have been surfing the channels to get more info. Glad we have this thread.
