It's a tough one. Personally without alcohol I either would have killed myself by now or lots of irritating people. On the other hand alcohol does do a huge amout of damage to socity. I would support it being banned if the government had a suitable replacment substance.

I think we all understand your much repeated, but without reasoning, point. There are simply so many tributary questions from it that, at present, you have failed to put forward a valid case. Sex causes many problems for people- do you want all people to be sterilized at birth?

I think you've made it crystal clear that you have absolutely no desire to give sympathy or care to anyone that drinks and are not interested in preserving their health by banning alcohol. However, that is firstly a slightly disjointed point of view (prioritising those who deserve care by your own standards only) and also fails to consider all other activities to the same standard.

I'll state it again: you cannot scapegoat alcohol for such a spectrum of problems. It shirks personal responsibility and therefore enables far more problems.

Alcohol does not quell inhibitions to the extent that so many people believe (and which seems to be culturally accepted). I have posted this already but it seems like so many things in this thread you have entirely ignored it. www.bbc.co.uk... I think this article is extremely relevant to your point of view.

By demonising alcohol to such a significant extent we are effectively empowering it's potential for negative actions. By repetetively stating how horrendous it is we make more people expect their inhibitions and self control to be annihilated by it therefore allowing themselves to commit terrible deeds.

You husband is an alcoholic... therefore treat all drinkers like you'd treat your husband.

I see a theme..

"I have a problem, and I inflict it in everone!!!!!"

Yeah, good idea.

Alcohol is legal in all countries?

But fat people don't pick up refrigerators and throw them across the room when they are drunk like my six foot six, three hundred pound son,

OMG the stories I can tell, or shatter someones jaw, or rip the metal security door off the bar,

When he isn't drunk he is the nicest guy you ever want to meet, when he is drunk you never know what will trigger him.

And the same guy in a car does what? Drive like a saint, when sober?

Your son has a problem. Not drinking folk.

Can't you differentiate this?

Everyone SoAndSo on ATS was a lunatic and might kill people.. Ban ATS.. Arrest anyone who uses it... Oh who cares if we are not all maniacal lunatics, it's been proven someone who was on ATS killed people.. therefore we ALL are guilty.. better to be safe than sorry.

bugger off...

By god we should ban cars!! He wouldn't have been able to do it without a car. CARS ARE EVIL.

I call for cars to be illegal.

You agree with me chips, Thank you. SAY NO TO CARS!

Your definitely not going to be lashed, it is a very logical post, and you nailed it. The reason it is legal is because local, state and federal governments make huge money on the taxes associated with alcohol, as well as tobacco. While it is true that anyone can be an alcoholic, from your street corner junkie to the high level executive you spoke of, it knows no socioeconomic boundary. Very thoughtful post

Thank you for your kind words, but had to LMAO when you said I wont be lashed. Have you read these peoples posts. I bet the local hardware stores are now sold out of pitchforks now lol.

You run around screaming Frankenstein monsters, and you're the only one being a freak, you expected kudos?

alcohol is not the cause of problems, it just brings out the problems that already exist in individuals. to stop people from drinking would be a vialation of their rights

well some of us do need sleep, if your a true home brewer it is not all that hard , one tub one shower and one 60gal hot water heater for no other reason or use but to brew. it helps if you have a stove that is for them same use, kind of hard to cook dinner and brew on the same stove.

The op in the opening statement has asked that the prohibition to Alcohol be reintroduced, and thus he brings up points that are valid.
Having stated that, lets go back into history to see what all happened, the before during and after effects of said prohibition.

Alcohol has been targeted before by a few to be removed from the general population of the USA. The movement was granted and passed on Jan 16, 1920. The reasons were as follows on the following points:
Medical, economic, political and social.
For the medical points:
That alcohol causes suffering of the body when ingested, and that this led to higher deaths among men, often leaving families and children with out said head of family, children without fathers.
For the Economic point:
That many laborers got drunk and were not able to do their job, and that there would and was a high absence from work each week that was high, all going back to alcohol. Also at the time, many of the brewers and alcohol was coming from overseas, therefore there would have been no real economic benefit for such to the USA.
For the Political Point:
Many politicians were elected to protect the general good of the citizens and to look out for them.
And on the social point:
That many people who drink alcohol would spend large sums of money, thus depriving their children and families of benefits, along with higher rates of divorce.

Those were the primary points and arguments used to get prohibition passed in the USA.
And what all did it get the USA?
If you look, higher crime rate, as the black market and organized crime saw a niche and started to import such from over seas, making a killing in profits, and often leading to violence against each other and other people. Numerous people, were incarcerated and ultimately had their lives ruined all due to the constraints on their individual freedoms. Border towns started to become boom towns, increasing economics of a foreign power for those who could merely travel across the border to have a drink.

The question should be, is that one more thing that the country needs?
How far should the government go to dictate what we can and can not consume and enjoy? When does it become the right of the federal government to impede in our private lives to where it starts to become less freedom, all in the name of preserving society that it would be best to have a hands off approach?
Prohibition caused a lot of havoc in the country, many people did not think of the consequence of this law and ultimately regretted it. While it may have seemed like a good idea, the benefits were not so great and ultimately will not be measurable over time, as it would cause the exact same problem that we are seeing right now with other things that the government is trying to do.

While I do enjoy the occasional drink, and it is within moderation and then mostly for cooking, the last thing that the country needs is something else that is banned by the federal government as to what people can and can not consume.
It boils down to this, when can people start taking responsibility for their actions on what they choose to consume and put into their bodies? After all is that not the very essence of the freedoms that we so enjoy?
