so basically you're saying stealing is ok as long as it facilitates your needs........??

Is that about right?

Well then, why is OWS so upset?

If you want to even try and compare those two scenario's as the same....that is

really grasping for straws..

They need water to survive, and its not costing the "owner" who has plenty, a whole lot.

If you want to compare that to filthy rich jerks who would take the last 20 dollars from a seniors bank account for fees..then go right ahead.

Even taking these two as an example of the whole movement is stretching it to an extreme.

Did you read the comment of his I was replying too? I assume not. In it he said that if they would have asked him he would have given them the water. I countered that with repeating the fact he had stated that he wasn't home and caught them walking up the street. He then began admonishing them. So he is saying the should have asked him, yet simultaneously admits to not being there so they couldn't have asked him.

Im thinking youre having some reading comprehension issues...........

Its pretty clear......he saw them filling the bottles from his place WHILE HE WAS WALKING UP TO HIS PLACE......so he caught them in the act

I dont understand how this is hard to grasp

No problems... the heat of the moment. ;-j

It is this melting pot of opinions that makes for such an intersting community at ATS.

Cheers for the apology.

Because it has a point, direction and real content.
Unlike many of the arguments for the whole OWS gig.

isn't city water free?

Yes, as a matter of fact city water is free in Canada. You only pay for heated water, and heated water doesn't come out of outdoor faucets obviously.

This thread is a diversion, and a poor attempt at painting protesters as thieves. Horrible.

no grasping at straws is downplaying the fact that they were stealing.........theft is theft.......

Committing one theft while protesting another is called hypocrisy..........

You think it's free?

Most property owners pay for the education ALL children receive through property taxes and other excises. Most people DO have free water because their apartment complex pays for it for them no matter how much the use.

People who own their homes and pay property taxes also have to pay for sewer and water and trash pick up.

One way or the other, the homeOWNER pays. For the very reasons listed above.

What a bunch of self-entitled little jerks!!!!
I am NOT part of the 1%...I am just a working class guy like most.

This is what went down.
I am walking up the street and see 2 dirtyish looking guys filling 4 giant water bottles (about 3 quarters the size of a water cooler bottle)
I said "hey guys you can't be doing that...you are trespassing"
He tells me to ef off and was extremely arrogant.

I say "there is alot of support for this movement...if you just would have asked it would have been fine"
The fact they might have been doing this under my nose for the last 2 weeks really pisses me off.

He tells me to "ef off" and tells me to "call the police"
So I did.
The cops showed up and knew who they were right away.
They told me these guys have a sense of self-entitlement and are arrogant.
They were also really nice (this is for all you cop bashers out there)
They called me back and told me it was dealt with and they will not be returning.
I thanked them and told them to have a good day and that I appreciated it.

This costs money and they aren't the ones paying for it.
I support the homeless (I give them money when I can) and up until this point i supported the occupy movement (in a small way)

Now...I just see these people as self-entitled,arrogant little douchebags.

So you now paint the whole group, the whole mass of these people, based on the actions of TWO?

Hmph!

Most of the Occupier supporters here are justifying the stealing of someone's else's stuff. What difference does it make how much it cost? The action shows the entitlement mentality that this movement has been associated with from the start. No wonder our country is going down the toilet, with so many people expecting everyone else to pay for their stuff.

But you are only looking at it from the OP's side of the issue. It sounds like this tap was next to a public sidewalk, so how do we know the homeless guys didn't think it was a tap they could use? Maybe they were thinking that they were justified because everytime they try to go into a public store to get a drink, they get dirty looks from the people working? It's not as if they can just go somewhere and ask for water - very few places welcome them! I doubt it even crossed their minds that someone would get angry for them using the water, and they probably thought it was for public use anyways, or that whatever amount they used, was infintesimal compared to the amount that is used in that building every day (which it is - look up how many gallons you use each minute in the shower, something like 5! And they were only taking 5 ish gallons a piece).

And then, some random guy they never saw before, who is wearing nice clothes and clearly has shelter and food, comes up to them and tells them to stop. You know what is probably going through their minds? "Who the hell is this guy, and what gives him the right to tell me I can't have anything when he has so much already?"

The two situations are simply not comparable. Wall Street intentionally steals because they are greedy. These guys probably didn't even think what they were doing would be considered stealing.

This line right there tells me everything I need to know about this mentality......

He clearly stated to them they were stealing, their reply was hostile........that does NOT go along with the "poor guys with no shelter" mentality......

These were entitled jerks, and apparently not the first time the officers had to deal with these particular people.....

"Someone who has food and shelter" OH those poor poor people...........GO HOME and you have food and shelter.........

Give me a break man, the justification of theft, and then them being RUDE about it, is mind numbing

and this isnt just "two people" . There are numerous accounts of theft going on with the OWS crowd......this whole "a few bad apples" is quickly going out the window, as poor behavior and loose moral fiber seem to be becoming more of a rule, then the acception to it

Guess you showed us what you are all about..

Casting judgement on a whole movement because of the actions of two of them is rather immature..and griping about a few bottles of water.. seems to be petty in my opinion.

I know, right? Complaining because someone stole from him? What's the world coming to when a person complains about theft? The nerve of some people!

All this over what is probably 10 cents worth of water. WTF? I'll send ya a damn quarter if ya want?

Yes dude taking without asking is wrong. We all get the principle. Now how bout you try to wrap your head around the idea of having some sense of perspective?

And actually no.. I take it back.. I won't send you a quarter. I'll send you pennies instead.. as a tribute to your pettiness. Special pennies at that.

Wow do you whine much? Seriously? Is this what the world has become. Your getting your titties in a twister over a little bit of water, when the banks and utility companies will rob you dry of every cent you have?

Its going to get alot worse before it gets better. Better roll up your sleeves man. There are idiots everywhere but cmon this is just completely ridiculous to complain about and kind of immature in my honest opinion....grow up. You could have de-esculated that situation if you wanted to but I think you wanted a confrontation and were being a big baby. Either that or the story is completely fabricated just to shun the OWS movement.

Sorry bad mood, and tired of hearing about childish bs when so much more is at stake.

Civility and politeness cost nothing. They were a couple of bad apples but probably not representative of the whole OWS movement. It sucks when people take whats yours without asking. But lets face it, the one percent does a lot more of this than the 99 percent. Ever recall the oil companies asking you if they could drill on federal land? They would probably tell you to eff off if you objected. They certainly told all the fishermen in the Gulf that.

I think you are having some reading comprehension issues.
I am entirely aware that he is saying he walked up on them. What is the relevance of the fact that he caught them to anything I am saying. Did you ever see me dispute the fact that he caught them?
What are you trying to get at because you are blathering on about a point that no one is making.

Also, he said that he would have given it to them had he asked. Obviously if he walked up on them, he wasn't there for them to ask originally. So he walked up on them in the act (who knows, maybe the tried to ask) then yelled at them to stop. So is whole, "i'm a generous guy if you ask," is stupid because these people never had a chance to ask. They were filling up the bottles and then a guy walking up the street is yelling at them.

Anyway. I love it when people like you try to insult others for lack of comprehension when it is you yourself that is having the problem understanding. Have a good day. I'm off this waste of space thread.

that's not true, people who live in apartment complexes have to pay for utilities, or they have to pay extra in rent for the utilities. But my point still stands: taxes pay for free education, but water is controlled by private corporations who make you pay for "water treatment". Let's bring our wasted tax money home from foreign countries and away from rich banks and use it to subsidize water treatment so that neither the home owner or renter has to pay for it...

I don't think that is true, maybe some places in canada it is so.

www.moncton.ca...

That is the closest large city to me, seems water is not free. I still wish OP was a bit more clear on the story though, there have been some interesting questions raised that were not answered.
