We have had metal detectors for decades and look....they aren't everywhere. What...did you expect the metal detector technology to just stand still and never improve? So it improved and now people freak out (much like they would have if the internet was around when the first metal detector came out) so they offer an alternative. The alternative is a professional pat down. Kind of weird but I applaud the parent's choice against the extra radiation.

I understand how it would be to watch my child get searched by a TSA agent, not only would it irk the heck out of me because I have a flight to catch, but I would also wonder why the child was being patted down (which, can be answered, if the PARENTS choose not to walk through the fancy arches) and as a 2 year old, he would probably not know what was going on, or try to grab the glasses off their face, or play with their badge. He wouldn't be traumatized, he wouldn't remember it 30 years from now in a psychiatric ward. Does this mean I allow strangers to grope or molest my child without reason? Absolutely not, BIG difference, and quite frankly, jumping to the conclusion that this child "knows" she's being "groped" is sick in itself.

However, you have to stop and think there ARE sick f# out there, and they DO use children. If someone was wanting to bring something on a plane...be it drugs, a weapon of some sort, or whatever, and they KNEW that everyone's panties were twisted to their spines over children being searched, and therefore led to children now being search-exempt, guess where they would be putting this contraband? On the children. The TSA agent is just doing their job.

To the person who said "If they werent working for TSA, they'd be working in McD's" do you know this from personal experience? From what I have seen, TSA doesn't have nearly the same application process, and yes I do know them both from experience, it only takes a few clicks to view an online job application for almost any job, anywhere. These people pass background checks, go through testing, go through probationary periods, and many other steps. For McD's, it's usually a job fair or a group interview, or you just walk in, they look your application over for 10 seconds and say "Yeah, we'll work you in" and on you go to your new job. Different industries, different standards completely, and that statement you made was just ignorance in itself.

To the person saying there is exposure to radiation...from what I have read, whether it be true or not, there is more radiation just from riding on the airplane itself than what you will experience through the scanners, and that's how miniscule both amounts are. I just went through treatment for thyroid cancer, and have been shot up with radiation 3 times now...I am not dead and I can guarantee I would need to walk through those scanners over 1000 times before equalling out to what has been put in my body to kill the cancer. It is not a decision of "grope or be exposed to radiation", it's a matter of "choose how you want to be searched....pat down, or fancy metal arches/box/whatever"

Also, I am not a frumpy, unattractive lady (according to...me ) and I have never been randomly picked just so I can get my suitcase checked with a happy ending patdown. I have, however, had to take a 3 1/2 lb. dog out of the carrier, take her collar completely off, and prove to them that she can do a complete 360 turn in her carrier. That's part of their jobs as well.

I have also stood in a security line for about 3 hours on a bad day, and I have seen black people, white people, asian people, children, dogs, and purple people eaters get searched. It is RANDOM! They probably get a list at the beginning of the day, and it gives them numbers. The first number is 5, and they randomly search the 5th person of the day. The next is 28, so they search #28, and so on. They make babies take their shoes off. People in wheelchairs have their own line and special rules. I have had to open baby bottles, and they wave a wand over the top to check for fumes, and in one case, I had to squeeze a drop of liquid out of a bottle and they tested it for...whatever. They allowed it on the plane, because it was fine, so there goes the "conspiracy" of "no pumped breast milk on a plane" because THAT would be absolutely a violation of someone's right to feed their child!
Nothing is sacred with the TSA, because that's how the world works! Just because YOU wouldn't put something nasty on your child in the name of terrorism, or drug smuggling, or whatever, doesn't mean there's not some sick F# out there that wouldn't! If you are that naive, then friends, don't ever fly anywhere, don't leave your house, don't observe the world around you whatsoever! That's how it is, and it has nothing to do with limiting rights, limiting freedoms, legal child porn, purposefully x-raying you to see what color your skivvies are and if you're wearing boxers or briefs. Seriously folks. If they cut out security, and we got attacked, it would be a conspiracy. We got attacked, and they tightened security, and it's a conspiracy. Good grief.

If that had been my child, I would be in jail for assault right about now.

Thing is they should not be performing pat downs or x-ray scans without reasonable suspicion. Terrorism is not more of a threat today than it was 10 or 20 years ago. In fact back in the 60s and 70s with the PLO we didn't have the "security" we have today and still only a few planes got blown-up or hijacked.

And to pat-down a 6 year old girl is WRONG...I don't care if it was a palestinian girl, an iraqi girl or an american girl. There are do's and don'ts in society and people should be able to draw the line somewhere.

I agree pat-downs are better than x-ray scanners but NEITHER ARE NECESSARY! In fact they can use dogs and explosive detectors which are better and less intrusive.
