I don't believe in magical comets, chemtrails, or otherwise have any bias, and I think there will be a perfectly normal explanation for this, but don't think it looks like the images of contrails at all. There's clearly no smoke line extending from the flare.

Contrails are dependent on the ambient air temperature and air pressure. Some times they hang around for hours, while other times they last for just seconds. All I see is a short duration contrail.

They evaporate while the flare of the plane (if I'm not wrong about that being what it's meant to be) is still visible? Maybe I am missing something important about contrails -- it's likely, since I'm uneducated on the subject. I'm basing my impression on the google image search as linked to above. In one image I see a similarity in luminosity/color due to the lightning, and I see that contrails often have a splitting/forking component, but even that looks different to me and otherwise I honestly don't see the resemblance. The contrails seem to share several features missing here. Maybe someone could do one of those clever Photoshop jobs of circling and drawing on arrows to make it clearer for those of us who haven't looked at many contrail photos before?

But when you have multiple *trails that appear to be at the same altitude and one disappears quickly and one hangs around for hours, then what?

It is not comet Elenin, that much is certain.
By the two trails on the zoomed in picture it is probably just a planes contrail being reflected by the sun.
Cool effect.

Thats what I was thinking too.

Moreoever the camera is shooting from an angle and the object is far off to the front of the camera. Definitely reflection of the trails due to the sun.

This event seems to coincide with the re-entry of the Kounotori 2 , if we can see it for more then 1 day then i might say comet etc, but if it was just on the one day, then i put my money on the re entry.
i live in melbourne so if its there tommorow ill let you guys know.

High altitude jet travelling away from the observer, toward the sun set with a short vapor trail which quickly evaporates.

Awesome, thank you so much, Phage. That was exactly the information I wanted, but didn't know to search for supposed "UFO" images, and don't know enough about contrails to have already seen. Pretty cool looking, and I can see how somebody seeing one without knowing what it was would be freaked out.

Kounotori 2 was launched from the ISS, and it was designed to burn up on re entry and have a piece break away from the main piece to relay data after the burn up started, seems to fit well with the videos showing the object splitting in two.
and it was also carrying a load of trash from the station.
would be good to get some info on this to see where and when it re entered the atmosphere.
www.spacetimesnews.com...

but it just as well be contrails lit up in the sky..

It is in my opinion an asteroid, The reason I say this is we are passing through a comet swarm and will be in the tail of Comet Eleinin, and most comets carry small or large asteroids in their tail. [anything before it hits the ground is called a comet or an asteroid, but if it touches ground then it is called a meteor. A record was set in Jan. 2011, 19 near earth asteroids were discovered in one day. The United States Government declared them classified, as to not put people in panic mode, and is the reason they would rather you think it a ufo or missile. If you see something like a great big fire ball and you can not see a tail on it then you can bend over and kiss it good bye. As long as there is some tail in view it is not going to hit where you are. There are capibilities to knock them out, but if it is something really big they do not want to break it apart because then it would cause even more damage over a larger area. You don't have to believe me and that is fine, you can think it anything you wish. I watch every youtube ufo video looking for them.

What excellent work Phage!! And not a derogatory tone to be seen. Exceptional and wonderfully refreshing.
THANK YOU - mainly for the definitive proof of what it (now clearly) is and, for not openly assuming everyone who doesn't know, must be deliberately hoaxing or an utter idiot.

See above and perhaps you should take a leaf from Phages book and not be so stuck up your own a$$.

But they won't pay any attention.

people do...just not always when they are being verbally attacked and made to look like idiots by someone who clearly has anger/self esteem issues.
Check your attitude - people like you are seriously ruining what is a great site by their incessant ridiculing and putting down of others. Go back to GLP if that's what you're here for.

It just looks like an airplane that is in the distance and High enough to have the sun reflect off of it (even if it already set on your horizontal plane) Ive seen this a couple of times too, it does look weird, but pretty confident its just an airplane. Good observation.
